Well I just happened to be in the area last night and noticed this store that I hear people talking about from time to time. So I figured I have a few minutes let me just go in here and see what it's all about. Mind you, my mom had already bought me reusable shopping bags from here and I keep them in my trunk...hmmm okay let me go ahead and put at least one to use tonight. I came here last night with my daughter and her friend and basically we just went up and down every aisle to see the happenings. First of all, I love that it's not your normal size grocery store. It's probably not even half the size of your average (Food Lion or Farm Fresh) grocery store. I pretty much went in and picked up only the essentials that I needed: eggs, greens, some fruit and a couple of other things. For about 8 or 9 items I paid under $25 which I thought was great. I didn't even have any coupons! I understand that they do have coupons in their flier from time to time so definitely be on the lookout for that. The staff was friendly. I'm not sure how the shopping carts work, but I realize that I picked up more things than I intended to pick up so one of the associates offered to give me her shopping cart so I was like okay thank you...sweet! I read someone else's post and it shows that you pay a certain amount to use the cart and you get the money back when you return the cart. I don't know I can't vouch for that. The cashier was friendly. She had small talk and a kindred spirit. It just felt really good to have been in there for the first time... no pressure... everything was smooth sailing. I went up and down every aisle, but I was just so gung-ho about the fact that I really enjoyed the setup of this store. I so cannot remember everything they sell. But if you have time a quick 10 minutes ...10 minutes or so probably will be all that it takes for you to walk in and walk out to be able to know if you like it here or not. Worth the trip... have fun!

So I been seeing the flyers to this place show up at my house for the past year. Ive been hearing a few people say that its a great place to try out due to the low prices. I typically do a lot of shopping at a wholesale club but this weekend I needed some fruits and I don't like buying that in bulk so I decided to try out Aldi. Its in the Chesapeake square shopping area so super convenient location. I read the reviews so I know I needed a quarter and my own bags so I came prepared. Upon walking in I was greeted by the wines and beers. The prices on the wines were very reasonable. I saw a lady with a whole case LOL. The prices on some of the produce was really out of this world. Other things like mangoes and avocados was not that impressive. I was able to find everything that I had on my list and then some. I don't think you could completely shop here but for most things you can grab them. I scored organic extra virgin olive oil for $4 and that was a steal. One thing to note is they use a lot of name brands that are unfamiliar so if you are super into the particular brands that you like this is not the place for you. All in all great place to check out and I will definitely be stopping in here again.

Huge aisles with a wide selection!

Was not what I was hoping for. Maybe it was just a bad time of the day to select fresh produce, but I was not impressed.

I found out they were going to be here so I planned to visit the Farmers Market. Locating the Farmers Market was not too hard. The area it is located in is so cute. Parking is hard. You have to park on the street which is tight! There is a small section of parking lot opened at the church, but, that fills up fast. Parking on the street is better than the lot. Be prepared to walk to and from your car. They had about 20-30 different places. You can get fresh produce, knifes sharpened, bath products... and DOUGHNUTS! It's a nice small farmers market.

Bodacious bakehouse have you covered for your freshly baked artisan bread needs, Cowboy Syd's got your neo-southern gourmet goodies (those of you who are Norfolk locals will know about Chef Meers and his famous restaurant career), meanwhile Cullipher Farm brings you locally grown fruits and veggies from Pungo Ridge. Three ships coffee roll up in their awesome coffee machine (don't know what I mean? You should be here then!) and Doughminion Donuts brings the treats for your sugary needs, soon to close their doors in Selden Market, but they'll be here right through til September. Then there's Fayton Farms artisan cheeses offering up some finely crafted small batch cheese from Mechanicsville but locally sourced milk, and Hampton Roads Winery coming through with the vino offering a taste of their wines for $1, and my personal favorite The Flower Lady, Robin Lindsey from Portsmouth along with her heeler pup Reno - bringing fresh free range chicken and duck eggs along with locally grown flowers. It's small, but there are plenty more vendors I've not named that should be checked out. The later in the day you get there the less there is on offer to buy, but it's definitely one to check out, just make sure you bring some dollars with you, it's not the cheapest - but all in the name of supporting small businesses right!? Love your locals!!

I have been passing by these stores in almost every city in Hampton Roads Virginia ( don't ask me where it got that name because I don't have a clue,I'm not from this area ) but as I was saying I passed by this supermarket chain countless times and never purchased anything that I can remember but I finally decided to give them a try and I brought a loaf of bread and some blueberries ( I love them ). The store didn't have a huge variety of items ti chose from but they have all your basic needs like bread, eggs, pastries, juice beverages etc etc. I would come again to make a purchase if needed but if you noticed I left out a star and that's because you should have your own bag or a shopping cart with you at the time of your purchase and of course I didn't have either so... some may say that's my fault but in my defense I had no idea!.

I am not a shopper, so when I get excited about a store, that should tell you something. I recently…read moreheard through the grapevine that Aldi was coming to town in Portsmouth. I knew the name, but really didn't know much about it. After researching the company this morning, I found out Aldi is owned by the same company as Trader Joe's. Aldi opened in Germany in 1961, and the first US store opened in Iowa in 1976. The more I read about this grocery store chain, the more I wanted to go check it out. So, off I went. First things first--you need to bring two things with you when you go to Aldi: 1) Bring a quarter for your shopping cart. You will get it back once you return your cart. The idea is that Aldi doesn't have to hire someone to retrieve carts scattered throughout the parking lot, and that keeps their costs down. 2) Bring your own bags because Aldi does not provide any for you. I think it is a fantastic idea! I'm sure the real reason is to keep costs down, but I love that it makes people use their own bags. *FYI--You will also have to bag your own items after paying for your things--they have a long counter for you to do that. When I found out that Aldi was a discounted grocery store, it gave me images of dented cans, rotten produce, and cheap brands. I was delighted to see that their small, but quality inventory was impressive; they carry lots of organic items and a large gluten-free line. Most everything I needed today I was able to purchase at Aldi. The store was clean, organized, and small. I can imagine it being crowded during peak hours, but it was quiet and mostly empty when I was there around 10:00 a.m. on a Monday. I liked the layout of the store, and I enjoyed the décor--not flashy, but comfortable. The cashier who rang up my items was very friendly and helpful--he asked if I was able to find everything, and when I told him it was my first time visiting, he said there was a $10-off coupon, which he went ahead and gave to me. I am in love with Aldi, and I plan to shop here on a regular basis even though I have to drive 25 minutes to get there. I found the prices to be extremely affordable compared to any other store I'd shopped at (except maybe the commissary but with much less hassle). I left with a shopping cart full of food and it cost me $70. You be the judge!

Shopping carts are not scattered about due to the 25 cent deposit required to use a cart. You get your quarter back when you return the cart to the appropriate place, I love this policy and wish more stores would adopt it. Another thing about the carts, they all seem to be in good repair. I've never had a cart with a wheel that wouldn't turn or one with a flat spot on a wheel making it go "thunk, thunk, thunk..." as you push it down the aisles. I don't know if it's because most of the ALDI stores in this area are fairly new or if the carts or just better maintained than at most other grocery stores. Like other ALDI stores this one features wide aisles which are easy to navigate. The store is very clean and organized and staff is super friendly and helpful. They stock most everything you expect to find in a supermarket and prices are really excellent. There are some national brands available but for the most part you will find brand names different from what you are used to at Food Lion, Kroger, Walmart, etc... Products are of good quality and priced much lower than those national brands with which you may be more familiar. There is plenty of nice fresh fruit and produce. Fresh beef, chicken, pork, fish, deli items, bakery items, etc... are all prepackaged and of good quality. Checkout can be a little slow with only one aisle open most times but they will open a second line if the wait gets too long. Overall I would say the waits to checkout are significantly faster than at Walmart, Food Lion, Kroger, etc... Two thumbs up for yet another fine ALDI supermarket.
