I originally called Jason for a quote to install carpet at my rental property. He showed me carpet samples as well as vinyl planks. I'd never had vinyl plank installed at the property, however opted to go with this far more expensive product when Jason assured me it was a highly durable option for rentals. He claimed that I would not have to replace the floor for a very long time to come and if I ever had an issue, he would return under the ALD 10 year warranty.
In the living room there was what we thought to be an inactive floor return. Jason gave me two options 1) install extra sub floor over the return prior to laying the planks 2) lay the planks directly over the floor return. I questioned the options and asked if the second, more affordable option would cause future issues with functionality. He claimed the floor would be totally functional. I chose option 2 based on this information, as I had already stretched my budget to include vinyl planks rather than carpet, which was previously laid around the floor return, rather than over.
Within weeks the planks installed directly above the floor return started to bow and shift. One plank was so loose it could virtually be removed by the tenants. I called Jason under the warranty. He came out to assess the situation and told me I would need to spend hundreds extra to have the floor corrected. I reminded Jason that he had assured me I would not have an issue with functionality, and had based my decision to install planks rather than carpet off the information he provided to me at the time of the quote. Jason responded by telling me I should have had the common sense to know that it would not be functional. I reminded him that I had followed his advice each step of the process. At this point Jason's previously professional persona became threatening as he tightened his fists and threw air punches, claiming he'd tried to do me a favor and cut the costs so I might be able to afford the vinyl planks. I felt intimidated and asked him to leave, which he did.
I realized my "10 year warranty" was worthless, cut my loss, and moved on to new floor contractors. I paid $760 to have Jason's work corrected. During this process I discovered that what Jason and I thought was "inactive floor return", turned out to be expensive, fully operable, working gas. This should never have been covered over, as Jason advised. It was too late to select carpet or linoleum sheets, a far more suitable flooring choice which would easily go around the floor return. As a result, the new flooring contractors disassembled part of the working gas unit to build a sub-floor over it. They were dumbfounded as to why I ever would have covered over this. I had no choice but to rip up the planks and start again without covering the gas unit, OR rip part of the gas unit out in order to build the sub floor. The perfectly good gas unit is no longer functional.
I see retrospectively, vinyl plank was the wrong choice at this property. Aside from the issues with the gas unit, the sub floor throughout the rental is highly uneven. Jason was aware of this. I figured the planks would cover over the imperfections as carpet did. Not the case at all. The floor appears highly uneven since the ALD installation. Not an upgrade at all.
Jason claims he's a hard working Christian who will honor his word. Not my experience unfortunately. Very disappointed in the lack of follow up service, and threatening behavior I witnessed first hand. ALD did not solve my floor issue, they created far greater issues which I have been working to correct since. I spent 4 x my carpet budget, have an uneven, unattractive floor, and the property no longer has a valuable gas supply. Had Jason advised me correctly at the time of the quote, he would have informed me that planks were the wrong choice for my particular property. Bad advice has led to endless headaches, not to mention the expense. read more
