This is my partner's most recent experience: I had planned to get a tattoo done right before the Christmas holidays and so made an appointment 3 months in advance. The tattoo I wanted I'd been thinking about getting for quite some time now, and obviously since it's a permanent fixture on my body, I had some specific ideas I wanted to bounce off her. I made time to visit her shop about 3 weeks before my actual appointment to go over some of the details. She listened to what I had to say, but gave the impression that I was not a priority, despite me being the only person in her store. I was a little put off, but left her with some notes on what my ideas were. Two weeks before my appointment, I emailed her with a more concrete idea, some reference images, a description of what I wanted based on these images, and a few questions about her pricing and such. I never received a response from her, and ended up sending another email to her a week later to see if she had ever received the first one. She finally responded saying she had received it, but that she wouldn't start working on the design until closer to my appointment time. She finally reached out to me with questions about my design 48 hours before the scheduled inking. After responding to her questions, she emailed me 20 minutes later with a draft image. I sent back an image with some alterations I wanted and she replied with "I'll get to it tomorrow". The next day rolls around, and she sends me an altered image about 24 hours before my appointment with only one of the five changes I had wanted, and no text accompanying that email. At this point, I'd spoken with the community at large which had unanimously said that this transaction was sketchy at minimum, if not an outright scam. So I responded to her 'updated' image expressing my discomfort, and explaining that I'd rather have someone who cared a bit more about the permanent piece of art I wanted etched into my skin. Her response was that she was "a VERY busy tattoo artist, and routinely did everything last minute." This, needless to say, did not reassure me. She then informed me of her 72 hour cancellation policy. When I confirmed my cancellation and asked how I was supposed to adhere to that policy when she had only reached out to me 48 hours prior, her response was "Happy Holidays" At this point, I'm more disappointed than angry. The tattoo was supposed to be a Christmas gift and I got myself excited about it, but this whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.

I had never been to XS before, but I recently went in to check them out and was blown away. They were extremely kind, attentive and knowledgeable. Best service: -I did not wait long at all before I was approached by a staff member. -I was not treated like an idiot (I have no visible tattoos or original piercings), in my experience a lot of shops judge the customer at first glance. XS did not. They were informative, but not condescending. -The staff was honest and not afraid to work with each other to come to the best conclusion or answer to any question I asked. -They were clean/hygienic and committed to my safety and theirs. I was so comfortable, I had my nose pierced on the spot. I was comfortable, had trust and didn't really feel a thing. Nico, who pierced me was exceptional. I worked in retail most of my life and unfortunately, most people only feel the urge to write a review if they are displeased. However, I find it is equally important to write a review when you are very happy or impressed with the service received, because it should encourage the continuous good standard of service one provides.
