Albrecht Duerer was and is the most celebrated artist of Nuernberg and rightfully so. He was already recognized and famous during his lifetime.
This monument is the first monument in all of Germany to be erected in honor of an artist.
The foundation stone was laid in 1828 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the painters death. The monument was completed and unveiled in 1840. There it still stands, looking over the small plaza, halfway up the hill to his former residence and now museum dedicated to his life.
