I moved to Sacramento from San Jose in 2014. My daughter finished first grade in Carmichael elementary where she suffered tremendously. The teacher did not put the attention and dedication a teacher is responsible for, consequently leaving my daughter struggling even more than she was before. I was finally able to put my daughter in Deterding Elementary. Mrs. Morganstern was an Angel in disguise. She immediately recognized my daughter frustration and how behind she was in her academics. She met with me and developed a plan for my daughter success. She and other teachers organized an after school tutoring program for kids like my daughter to get that extra help they needed. I couldn't believe the dedication and care these teachers like Mrs. Morganstern genuinely give to their students. When she found out that my daughter was moving from school to school, and yet moving again to Santa Cruz, she quickly contacted me strongly concerned a

My step-son is brilliant but undisciplined and he was allowed to "graduate" sixth grade without doing any work at all and only getting "1's" and "2's" his whole career there. My oldest step-child would've succeeded anywhere anyhow and still does..... My fifth grade daughter has had much the same experience as my son until this year. This year I've been heavily involved and her teacher is very communicative and the difference has been huge. The school goes on wonderful field trips in every grade. The music program is awesome, my daughter has class for 30min 3x's/week and is learning quickly. The office staff are typically rude. The parking lot ( pickup / drop off ) is well managed and there is a great focus on child safety and using crosswalks. There's also a crossing guard and a " lighted?" Crosswalk just for school goers. P.E. is not a large focus but I believe funding is gone for health at most elementry schools. The children do have a large field, two playgrounds, ball courts, basketball courts and a basebal / kickball backstop. The surrounding area is typical for the city except that there is an outpatient psychiatric facility about 1 mile up mission avenue. There are people often in the area that " act weird " but I've heard of nothing harmful from them. I would rather my daughter been in a different school for all previous years but I am happy with her, her teacher and myself right. I wouldn't choose to enroll another child in this school but I'm alright with my daughter finishing out this year there.

The current principal, while new, seems approachable, knowledgeable, and caring. The middle school staff is fantastic! The resource teacher is also amazing. Kids can struggle and as a parent that's hard but I know my kids are better for everything they have overcome and accomplished. As parents we have tried to be as welcoming as possible to all new families because we know being new can be hard and because we were welcomed. Her first week was absolutely packed with fun activities. They did tie-dye, a color run, and even took a hike to the park. She absolutely loved it, and it felt like there was always something going on. The second week was a little different. There didn't seem to be as many planned activities, and she mentioned having quite a bit more downtime. It wasn't necessarily bad, but after such a fun and activity-filled first week, I think we were both expecting a little more. The campus itself is really nice, and one thing I appreciated was that there weren't a ton of kids in her camp group. I want to say there were around eight kids, which made it feel smaller and more personal. They also had a really fun potluck, and I've heard they sometimes take bike rides to a local coffee shop, which sounds like such a fun little adventure for the kids. Overall, my daughter enjoyed her time there, especially that first week. I just wish the activities had been a little more consistent from week to week. If both weeks had been like the first one, this easily would have been a 5-star experience. Helpful tip: If you're signing your child up for multiple weeks, just know that the activities may vary quite a bit depending on the week.
