I was finally able to put my daughter in Deterding Elementary. Mrs. Morganstern was an Angel in disguise. She immediately recognized my daughter frustration and how behind she was in her academics. She met with me and developed a plan for my daughter success. She and other teachers organized an after school tutoring program for kids like my daughter to get that extra help they needed. I couldn't believe the dedication and care these teachers like Mrs. Morganstern genuinely give to their students. My step-son is brilliant but undisciplined and he was allowed to "graduate" sixth grade without doing any work at all and only getting "1's" and "2's" his whole career there. My oldest step-child would've succeeded anywhere anyhow and still does..... My fifth grade daughter has had much the same experience as my son until this year. This year I've been heavily involved and her teacher is very communicative and the difference has been huge. The school goes on wonderful field trips in every grade. The music program is awesome, my daughter has class for 30min 3x's/week and is learning quickly. The office staff are typically rude. The parking lot ( pickup / drop off ) is well managed and there is a great focus on child safety and using crosswalks. There's also a crossing guard and a " lighted?" Crosswalk just for school goers. P.E. is not a large focus but I believe funding is gone for health at most elementry schools. The children do have a large field, two playgrounds, ball courts, basketball courts and a basebal / kickball backstop. The surrounding area is typical for the city except that there is an outpatient psychiatric facility about 1 mile up mission avenue. There are people often in the area that " act weird " but I've heard of nothing harmful from them. I would rather my daughter been in a different school for all previous years but I am happy with her, her teacher and myself right. I wouldn't choose to enroll another child in this school but I'm alright with my daughter finishing out this year there.

They are welcoming and respectful. We are lucky to have landed in this class. My daughter has life long friends. Some since 2nd grade and some as new as 6th grade. I have a 6th grader who has learning g needs and the school works tirelessly to help him and meet him where he's at. We would recommend this school 100% to all families. I know both of my kids will leave prepared for high school. We found the previous principal fair, caring, and understanding but also realistic. We are thankful to have had her as long as we did. The current principal, while new, seems approachable, knowledgeable, and caring. The middle school staff is fantastic! The resource teacher is also amazing. Kids can struggle and as a parent that's hard but I know my kids are better for everything they have overcome and accomplished. As parents we have tried to be as welcoming as possible to all new families because we know being new can be hard and because we were welcomed. We love it there but with we would not have changed schools if we knew what we know now. The speech therapist is amazing at Starr king. The school makes you feel comfortable. Mission does not. This is my child's 4th year and last at mission. We might place her back at Starr king where people are nicer and have less drama (if we don't get into our other school). Starr king has a bad reputation but most of it is rumors.

The high school is exceptional. No one is a number here. Faculty and staff know students well and are very invested in students' intellectual and emotional growth. The school has a wonderful theater program and everyone who wishes to participate may. This is also the case for all other extracurricular offerings -- Speech and Debate, Athletics, etc. I don't think enough people are aware this wonderful school is here, and that needs to change.
