We had a crew of 4 and were taken out by Captain John and deckhand Dylan for a half day salmon…read moretrip. Captain John was there to greet us at the dock and was very friendly and welcoming. We went out on the Hi Time boat a 30' which had plenty of room for fishing and warmth inside. We made it out to the fishing area within 15 minutes and had 4 rods in the water right away. The fishing was a little slow as we saw other boats not bringing in fish either and whales had entered the fishing area. While it was amazing to see whales, they do not help fishing. About halfway through the day my son hooked into a nice fish that was a great fight! He ended up landing a 30" King salmon, the biggest fish of his life! I caught a smaller chum salmon but was still fun to catch! My mother and father in law didn't get a chance to fish as we had no other bites. Dylan was working hard and being helpful to make the trip enjoyable and fun for everyone. He's a good kid and his family should be proud. He even let my son try fresh salmon eggs and salmon heart which he loved! Overall it was a great fishing trip and an experience that my son will never forget! We booked an 8 hour salmon and halibut fishing excursion and…read moreasked if they could find 1 or 2 more people to go out with us on the date of our tour so that the price would go down a bit since originally we only had 3 people. Captain Mike found us one other person to go which dropped our prices by around $20/PERSON. They were a little late starting the day because they had to pick up the other passenger from his cruise ship. Captain Mike said not to worry because they would keep us out longer to compensate for the lost time, which he did. Once we arrived at the first fishing spot, Captain David gave us a brief but thorough tutorial on how to reel in the big fish without hurting ourselves (backs) and tiring yourself out since we would be reeling from depths of 250-300 feet. This info was more valuable than I can tell you!! We went to 6 or 7 halibut fishing spots in the AM, then fished for salmon in the afternoon. We had a good catch overall for the day. Captain David event called out to his whale watching friends to find out if there were any whales to see that day. He took us over to where we might find them, but they were not around. He then took us to see some local sea lions up close and bald eagles in their natural habitat along the water. I appreciate the extra effort! When we got back to the dock, Jack gave us a masterclass on cleaning and filleting the halibut, rock fish, and cod we wanted to take with us to eat for dinner. He then gutted and beheaded the rest of the fish so they would be lighter for processing by the pound. Big Jim's suggested a fairly priced processing plant that froze our freshly caught fish and shipped it directly to our homes. --We had a great experience with Big Jim's Charters and will definitely book them when we return to Juneau and tell all of our friends to do the same! We just had the trip of a lifetime using this company! They've taken a yacht and divided it into 4…read morestaterooms, plus rooms for captain. They have more bathroom than bedrooms! With their wealth of experience, we traveled from Juneau to Sitka, Alaska filled with one of a kind experiences. We were taken to areas filled with lots of sea lions and puffins, a different area with mountain goats and their babies, and hiking areas. Probably the most spectacular was watching whales! Orca whales breeching out of the water. One whale got his entire body out of the water three times! Another day we were among humpback whales hunting together by bubble net feeding. The whales work together in a closing circle blowing bubbles forcing schools of fish together before the whales then swim up through the fish catching them in their mouths. To see groups of over a dozen doing this is fantastic! On a par with those two was coming up close to a glacier watching for calving while being served hot chocolate spiked with peppermint schnapps. While at that spot, we pulled in with nets very small pieces of floating glacier that was chipped up into smaller pieces to put in our drinks!! Lots of otters and bald eagles everyday. On a few days we got tandem kayaks out which was so relaxing especially in the glorious surrounding such as when we got close to some waterfalls. Everyday we saw lots of cute sea otters and bald eagles. One day we fished off the boat and on two days we put out crab pots, caught dungeness crab and had them for two sumptuous meals. Speaking of meals, all of them we magnificent! The chef, Debbie, seemed to be in the kitchen most of the day preparing these masterpieces. Fresh flowers were abundant on board, as well as snack baskets filled with different chocolate, candy, chips and snacks. Everyday was a new thrill. This was an unforgettable experience!

So I booked this trip through Fishbooker.com and went pretty seamlessly easy. My family and I have…read morebeen fishing with charter companies for years and know the game. The Captain Mike was friendly and the young deck hand Talon was very helpful and did his job well. We paid extra to go to the Icey Straights where the big fish were supposed to be and only raised 1 fish of decent size. My family likes to put fish in the freezer for the year. I understand fishing is fishing but I expressed my intent to take fish home and not just here to vacay fish and seemed to be put on a chicken ranch. So we tossed probably 4 or 5 small halibut back due to small size and the Captain says thats it we are done halibut fishing and going Salmon fishing. I didn't like being rushed off the Halibut fishing but ok let's go get some Salmon. This was a mess the rods and trolling gear wasn't set up right. Our trolling speeds were not at the right pace and we were using gear that was supposed to be rigged with bait but wasn't. We only landed one Salmon but it was to small. Now frankly the Captain was a nice guy but I got the impression that he didn't really give two shits about putting us on quality fish and was only interested in our money. So we get back to the dock and the deck hand is told to only gut and dehead our fish because we were going to take it to the processor for packing and freezing stating they like it better this way. Ok sure but whatever lets get it there. We get to the processor snd they are closed! They closed at 5 and we weren't told that they closed at 5 we were under the assumption due to info on the processors website that they closed at 7! I feel like that is something the Captain of the boat could have mentioned or at least should have known. So if you plan to go out with these guys do not spend the extra money going to the Icey Straights and don't expect the Captain to care about putting you on quality fish. I would suggest finding another boat from a local guy who wants to put you on quality fishing.

We were supposed to go out with Captain Toni but when we arrived to fish, however late in the morning we never saw her or her boat in the dock. We never got a call from her and so we called her on arrival only to find she (Toni) the Captain, had sent her boat out fishing with Nani her helper and other Captain, Ben Olson. Long story short, we were left wondering and waiting for Ben, but he did a great job in salvaging what was about to be a terrible day. For the fishing i give Ben props and Nani did a great job, but the actual booking, timing and arrangement made by Toni was not what we were told. One thing on the phone, another when we got there. She assured me she would take us out on our charter upon booking, then when we arrived (she) was not taking us out. She told me we forgot to fill out a reservation form after taking a $700.00 deposit from us in May 2012 for a charter agreement in July 2012. Call her before you fish with her, even if you gave her a deposit..and don't forget your reservation form as well or you could end up being told you forgot it even if you gave her a 50% deposit....so much for guarantees of charters with deposits!!
