It was one of our last days in Maine and I was on a mission to find the best lobster roll I could find. When I read the Yelp and Google reviews for this place, I knew I had found my spot. It's a small, no frills spot. The owner is super helpful and friendly. He'll proudly tell you why his lobster roll is the best. He uses claw meat which makes it sweeter. The pieces are very small, so it is loaded with meat. The popular rolls you see use giant chunks of meat, but with all of the space between them, this one actually has more meat even if it doesn't seem like it. And lastly, he uses both butter and mayo on it. I don't think I'll ever find a better lobster roll for the rest of my life. My husband claimed lobster rolls were overrated until we had this one. My only regret is that this was our second stop for food, so my husband and I shared one. To top it all off, this was the cheapest meal we had in Maine. Most places will charge you at least $35-40 for anything that has lobster in it. I think we paid $20-$25 for our roll. Whenever I'm in Maine, I will come here for another lobster roll, no matter how far out of my way I have to go. read more

Don't be fooled by it's simple appearance--Alaskan Captain and it's lobster rolls are phenomenal. And the man behind it all is friendly, welcoming and kind. Let me start by saying that these are and I think forever will be--to me--the best lobster rolls in the world. And this is coming from someone that has unreasonably high standards for lobster rolls. Someone that, until having these lobster rolls thought he didn't like lobster rolls because they have all been mediocre. No other lobster roll even comes close. So what makes their lobster rolls so special? I think it's two things: 1. They only use a blend of the smaller, sweeter pieces of lobster meat--claw, knuckle, and leg meat. 2. What a wonderful experience! My wife and I stumbled upon this little place that had their open flag out and a sign that reads 2 lobster rolls for $45 (June 1st 2025) the owner and main cook greeted us and took our order for two "loaded" (butter and mayo) lobster rolls and my cup of clam shower. The lobster roll was very disappointing. I've driven from Portland Maine to have one based on Google reviews. The lobster pieces were quite small and just little strips of I guess it was lobster. And even though I ordered it hot buttered it was cold inside the pieces of lobster and a little watery so I think it was actually frozen and mostly reheated. Captain Wayne runs a truly unique lobster roll stand. With lobster as expensive as it is, many places take a hot dog roll and place a few good looking pieces on top, but it is 90% bread. At Alaskan Captain, the owner butter toasts a roll to perfection, and then jams in as many small lobster bits as he possibly can. It may not look as pretty as the fancy places, but the roll is at least 50% lobster and probably more. You can get it plain, with butter, with mayo or any combination. Alaskan Captain is a one-person operation, and every roll is made perfectly by hand, so it can take a while if there is anyone ahead of you. RUN, DON'T WALK, TO EAT HERE. Excellent lobster rolls - definitely get the butter/mayo combo...and you're gonna want the large!! Perfectly toasted roll, overflowing lobster, totally delicious. While we were there, two other tourists and two locals came in--you know it's good if locals eat there! Excellent customer service - Wayne is awesome! Chatted with us and ended up giving us samples of his shrimp scampi! Clam chowder was yummy, too! You order at the counter and then he makes your sandwiches in the back--it does take awhile but it's worth it because it's so fresh! There's not a ton of room to sit but there is enough for a few people (the main room where you order has a small 6 person picnic table and there's another room with two small picnic tables).
