On our way out Captain Will briefed us, I sat up there to ask questions to see how I can up our odds of catching. I really wanted my kids and wife to catch. Will was very confident we will have a great time. Well I'll just put it this way. He went way above and beyond. The first 10 minutes lines were in the water we were already bent. 100lb halibut, yellow eyes, more halibut and even big lingcod are coming in. All fricken day. What a great time. This may apply for all Homer charters, but it is probably worth checking. What was also frustrating is that about nine salmon were hooked but only three landed onto the boat, every time we were told what we had done incorrectly after the fish was lost rather than before the fish was hooked.

We had beautiful weather and started out going for King Salmon with down riggers. The Deckhand Randy was also good and started out by stating he had "Saved 8 men overboard" & "I got the biggest balls in Homer". We started catching right away and Captain B would come down to net the bigger fish and mutter "Randy.. your a disaster today" I think it was all part of the act! We caught the KING limit and silver limit in no time without losing many fish at all.. maybe it was the walking stick?? Captain B then took us to a beautiful cove.. complete with a BAR to finish the day fishing for Rockfish! You buy your fishing tags at the office and it lets you catch 2 halibuts and 1 king Salmon. We went out about 25 miles out to do our fishing. The capitan was a great host he lets us drink beers and we all had a great time. Be sure to pack a lunch since all there required is to get ya on the fish. After fishing for 4 hrs we cruised up the inlet to try our luck on salmon. Out of 10 of us on the boat I was the only one to catch a 24lb king salmon. After we got back to the dock they filet the fish for ya. If your looking to ship back your fish they will take care of all shipping for ya. Old captain that seemed to rub people the wrong way is gone and retired. Fools gold was our ship, and was in fine enough condition, head was clean, plenty of room for the people in and out. We had the pleasure of being with Capitan Dave C. and Deckhand/first mate Ash. The two of them really made the trip incredible. We went with a group size of 7 plus a baby, and they were both insanely accommodating to the little one, let us setup a pack and play in the berth, even checked in on her when we were out fishing and she was sleeping. Tons, and I mean tons, of great conversations, hysterics laughter, and learning a boat load about the area, the fish types, everything under the moon, honestly. Both of them gave clean and consice rules, what to do, where to be in the boat, showed us how to bait, where to land the catch. Very patient folks, and made this excursion top notch. If you want to go halibut fishing, and want to have a good time, go with them. You'd be making a mistake to go with anyone else. Nancy explained everything and was very helpful when booking the charter. Mike runs the boat side as the Captain and we couldn't have asked for more. It started with an outstanding safety briefing on emergency equipment, introduced his outgoing mate Clayton, who will be a Captain this year and Jake who had his first trip with us under the watch of the seasoned Captains. Fished two days with Mike and crew and couldn't be happier! We caught four species on day one and missed our King limit by 1. Day two was just as good, although the King bite wasn't to be had. Two day total of fillets that we sent for processing was 230lbs ! Mike and his crew love what they do and it shows, this is a no BS crew that wants you to catch fish and works hard to make you happy. I had the weekend off, and decided to head to Homer for a mid-winter boondoggle. Fortunately,…read moreBrooks had room for me on the boat for a winter king salmon fishing trip. There were just two other clients, and we quickly settled in for a one hour ride to the hot spot. The seas were rough, and we ended up in the lee of the islands across from the Homer Spit. We quickly boated a few smaller kings, then nailed a nice 20 pounder. Deckhand Cody worked like a maniac to keep five rigs in the water at all times. He changed up the gear multiple times to pinpoint what the fish were hungry for. Three limits of winter kings later, we sailed back to port. If you are looking for a quality fishing trip at any time of the year, look no further. BAA will be fishing winter kings until April, then switching to combo halibut trips starting in June. I highly recommend Josh and his crew.

Our group of five spent two days halibut fishing with them and we maxed out both days. We grabbed a 103, 97, and 85 pounder for our top catches, and pure bragging rights requires me to point out that I landed the 103 and 97 pounders. It should also be brought up that Capt. Eric is a truly passionate fisherman and excellent host. While our goal was halibut when Capt. Eric found a school of rock fish, he stopped so we could catch our limit on them. Talk about a sweet cherry on top of what was already an amazing time. He also went out of the way to give us a chance of seeing some humpback whales, and while it was short lived we did get to see one. I could not stress how much I would recommend fishing with Maverick Charters and Capt. Eric. I have already told my wife that I will be going again!
