Bear viewing trip to Chinitna Bay. The boat ride was great, the young caption and guide were great, and we saw numerous bears. Most were far away from the viewing platforms with a couple close enough for decent photos. After visiting firsthand, an observation I'll make is that the odds are against seeing a lot of bears up close. The bad part of my experience is that the owner, Gabe, was a complete jerk. I called the only contact number with questions 3 times over two days (no answer) and texted at least 3 times. Received only one text reply which was a sarcastic response without answering my questions. No reply to follow up texts. For this reason, I would never consider paying him any more money for bear or fishing trips. Go with someone else. read more

Book a plane to see the bears instead! Safety was my #1 concern. The waters were extremely rough and we thought the boat (The Joker Alaska Ocean Pros) was going to flip over several times. Not once were we told if this was common or made feel comfortable and safe. At one point our captain was yelling out he was stressed so imagine how the guests were feeling and how that comment made us feel even more concerned for our safety. The seats are uncomfortable, your feet don't touch the ground, and there's no where to hold on to when those waves are almost knocking you over. Don't put your life at risk with them and just pay more for a plane ride to see the bears. read more

In January of 2022, I booked a Bear Viewing trip with Alaska Ocean Pros (AOP) and deposited $495. The trip was part of a larger 2 week trip to Alaska with my girlfriend. The trip was booked for August 18, 2022 and was scheduled for 9 AM - 5 PM. On August 16, I called AOP to confirm my reservation. I was told by Captain Gabe that the departure time was now 3:30 PM because of "optimal tides." When I told Gabe that it would be impossible for me to make this new departure time due to a tight Alaskan tour schedule, he informed me that there would be no refund of my $495 and $572.72 balance. AOP took $1067.72 from me and did not deliver the service promised. Nowhere on the AOP website does it list that departure times are subject to change. Tides can be calculated 100's of years in advance, so his change of departure time due to "optimal tides" made no sense. Additionally, less than 24 hours before my departure I was still receiving emails from AOP listing the departure time as 9 AM! After 7 months of filing charge disputes with my credit card company, I was finally refunded my $1067.72. AOP wasted MANY hours of my time and certainly operates with the motto 'adapt to our schedule or lose your money.' Did the Halibut/Ling Cod/ Rockfish Combo Charter on Saturday & it was so great I booked the long range halibut the next day! I was amazed as over 2 days 20 halibut over 80# were caught (3 over 100 & 1 @ 200#). A dozen Ling Cod over 30# & limited out each day! Captain Gabe & Austin were helpful, knowledgeable & hard working (especially when landing the 200 pounder!) The boat is fast, smooth & built to fish! You cannot go wrong with these guys! read more

We took a bear tour June 2024 and it was spectacular. Jimmy did an awesome job driving the boat and the ride was surprisingly comfortable and fast even though it was a small boat! He also told us about the area and growing up in Alaska. Britt was our bear guide and did a great job of keeping everyone safe and entertained . It can be unnerving to be out among wild coastal Brown Bears but Britt made everyone feel calm and prepared. They both went above and beyond to be helpful, friendly and give everyone a safe and enjoyable trip! And we saw incredible brown bears! This trip is much less money than flying in and the boat ride was enjoyable and we saw so many birds, including puffins my favorite! and wildlife. The info we were giving ahead of time was clear . We knew we would head out around 2 pm and return around 10 and we needed to bring our own food and drinks. The parking was very full when we arrived so come early! Best fishing charter in Homer! That is no joke either, Gabe and the hands that were helping were absolutely dialed in. They had us on the fish the whole time we were on his boat. We did a overnight trip (which I highly recommend) if your catching Halibut. They fed us well and had great laughs and conversations, if your looking in Homer to go fishing seriously look no more go with Gabe and slay the fish! read more

I recommend taking a trip to see the bears as they are amazing; however, I would take this tour with a different company that is more professional. First of all, they told us they were going to make a stop along the way for an important mission; however, they went off course and made us wait 30 minutes while they launched a raft with 3 blow-up dolls that were mocking their competitor which they should have done on their own time and not ours. Then they sent us on land with a 16 year old girl that was our guide to view the bears and who flirted with the driver the whole trip and made everyone uncomfortable given he is in his lates 20's and she is under age. The whole thing was very high school and not the experience you expect when you pay $626. Get your money's worth and go with a different company or better yet, pay the extra $290 and fly to see the bears. read more

Gabe was AMAZING!! We had a total blast and every person on the boat caught their limit! He took us out to the perfect places and we caught a ton of fish every time. Each place he took us had the exact species we were looking for. He was fun, funny, honest, and a great teacher. I will NEVER go with another charter service as long as Gabe and the Casino are around. Last year we went on the King Pin (also one of Gabe's boats, but with a different captain). This is our second charter we have been on and it did not disappoint. We did a long range Halibut trip out near Kodiak. Not only was the ride out pretty smooth, it was beautiful and the destination was not only full of halibut, but also scenic. Captain and deck hand were very knowledgeable in places to fish, techniques, and the area. Made us feel comfortable and safe the whole time. Whole boat limited on halibut and even scored some cod.
