We had an awesome time on the Seldovia Wildlife Tour with Captain Melissa! We were able to see so many birds and otters, while also getting a feel for the geography of Kachemak Bay! Having three hours in Seldovia was just enough time - we were there in early June and it was definitely a slow time in the town, so three hours was perfect. Seldovia day trip on the Rainbow Connection. Great day. Calm waters. Excellent crew. All female. Not that there's anything wrong with that. All Very knowledgable. They took their time going to Seldovia to stop at various places to point out the wildlife. We saw lots of otters, eagles and a few dolphins. The boat is well maintained, a nice covered seating area amidships, access to front & rear open decks, an upstairs bar/canteen and downstairs storage and restrooms. Every summer we head down to Homer and we go out on the Jackpot for a half day of halibut fishing. The crew on the Jackpot can't be beat. Art and Adam do a great job of getting us to a spot where there are tons of fish and we are entertained the whole time we are out. The only thing to keep in mind is that they keep it pretty shallow so you aren't going to catch any derby winners, but I prefer to pull in some solid 30-40 pounders which are better eating than 100+ pounds. read more

We used this service for both the Seldovia Tour and the Deep Sea Fishing. The staff was very courteous both time..we actually saw a whale during our tour...which was really awesome. The tour boat seemed a bit bigger than the deep sea boat...so rocking wasn't as bad. They usually have hot chocolate, tea, coffee on board...depending on the seas it could be a calm or bumpy ride...Deep sea fishing was very cool....one thing to note is that it is at least $100 dollars (most likely) to ship at least 10 lbs of fish somewhere in the US...so the costs add up...but the experience and quality of the fish is well worth it. I'd highly recommend Rainbow Tours again if I did it again... read more

Overall this was a very enjoyable experience. We all caught our limit of 2 halibut. The crew is very helpful and friendly. The only thing I didn't like is that the boat was so packed with people fishing that we were shoulder to shoulder at the rail and spent much of the time having the crew untangle our fishing lines. This was my first time ocean fishing so maybe this is just my inexperience showing and this is just the way it always is. Also there weren't enough seats for everyone to sit so several people had to stand. Maybe they usually take smaller groups out, that would solve both problems. Rainbow Tours Homer, Alaska This crew was extremely helpful they really worked hard getting the gear prepped, helping every person on board, they cleaned every fish caught, and they were really cool people to fish with. It's not required or asked for but remember to tip your crew. I saw first hand a genuine hard working crew and they still managed to smile and have a fun attitude. That made the fishing trip even better. To give you a brief idea how the half day halibut charter goes down. You meet at the boat in the morning, launch out of the Homer Spit. It's a bit of a ride out to the fishing spot maybe an hour if I remember correctly. At times the waves are large I recommend taking the motion sickness pills. I took the pills and still felt sick but if I didn't take the pills I think I would have felt so much worse then I did. I always get motion sickness so I take the pills and just deal with it and stay focused on having fun even if I feel sick. A tip is to keep your eyes looking out on the horizon further distances, I tried that too. Anyways, the crew is getting all the gear ready while everyone is either inside the boat looking out the windows or standing on the deck of the boat. Once you arrive to the fishing area they pick, the crew gives everyone giant pins used to identify which halibut is yours and also indicates what size halibut you've already caught because there's limits and these pins help in easily identifying these limits and to ensure you're staying within your limits. Everyone is handed a fishing reel and once you catch a halibut you determine if you want to keep that size or release it and try for a size you want. The crew is very helpful to every person fishing. You just let them know you have a fish and they come over to you and will help you reel it in if you need help. They will unhook the halibut and take it to a measuring table and you decide if you want to keep it or not. If you keep it the crew will pin it and keep your fish in a holding area on the boat with everyone else's fish but it's easy for them to identify which fish belong to which person because the pin is hooked to your halibut and it holds that information so you don't take home someone else's halibut. The crew is busy because people are catching the halibut left and right and the crew has a lot to do from the time you catch the fish. After everyone has caught their limit the boat heads back to the launching dock. During the boat ride back people are drinking coffee or on deck taking in the view or talking with other people. Meanwhile the crew members are in another area of the boat cleaning everyone's fish before the boat reaches the dock again. They clean the halibut for you and put it in a regular garbage looking bag. When you arrive back at the dock there is a representative from the local fish processing outfit who will filet, package your fish for the freezer, and box your fish for a fee. If you don't need their services you can just take your bag of halibut and call it a good day fishing. If you do utilize the fish packaging services there is a fee depending on how you want it packages for example do you need it ready to be mailed or put on a plane or do you just need the fish packages ready to drive home and put into your freezer. They do an excellent job and its ready that day. The business is called Coal Point Seafood Company and they are located within walking distance of the boat launch on the Homer Spit. The boat charter crew is very efficient, knowledgable, professional, and you can visually see them working hard for all the people on the boat to help make their fishing trip successful. Upon exiting the boat at the end of the trip people individually thanked the crew as they exited off the boat and people also hand them a cash tip while thanking the crew. A tip is not asked for or expected however I watched most people hand the crew a tip to show gratitude. I tipped because I truly appreciated all the hard work they did to make my day of halibut fishing a truly memorable success. It was a great day fishing for halibut. Our family of 5 consisting of an infant, preschool and school age child had an incredible time during our tour! The tour guides were kind, informative and extremely pleasant and we saw an abundance of wildlife on our way too and from Seldovia and we had a wonderful time exploring the wonderful community of Seldovia. If you have a few days in Homer I would recommend using the better half of one to treat yourself to a wonderful tour to a wonderful town with some wonderful ladies!! read more

Did their Halibut fishing charter with my family. The crew was very friendly, and everybody caught their limit of fish. They were very reasonable about fishing, going after moderate sized halibut that actually taste good, rather than going for trophy fish. On the way back they cleaned all the fish, and saved the cheeks. The charter was a bit crowded, 21 people on board, but everything worked well, and despite the large number of people, the crew of three was able to keep everything running smoothly. They also allow for ride-alongs at half price for those who are not interested in fishing, which was a perk for my family. One of the best value charters in Homer. I would definitely fish with them again. read more

As an Alaska resident I went on the half day Whitefish Charter (actually called Pollock Charter on the ticket) to put some cod or pollock or maybe even some rockfish into the freezer. The price was reasonable ($60) and I've heard there was plenty of cod in the area within sight of Homer where they say fishing would occur so I gave it a try. Sorry to say it didn't work out for my purposes. The captain and mate were good and the boat (Jackpot) was well kept but out of seven people fishing there was a total of two rock soles (flounder) and two dusky rockfish caught along with a few sculpin before time was up. Not one cod or pollock. I suspect we hit most of the spots they knew of for these fish and they weren't there. I'll be nice and call it an OK sightseeing trip but for catching fish it's not worth my time or effort again. read more

One star unfortunately despite the great crew. Did the half day trip for halibut. The crew was very nice and one of them- James- is from my hometown so that was cool. Overall though don't waste your $-at least not for the half day cruise we took. Looks like you could catch same size fish closer to the Harbor in Kachemak Bay Bc it cuts out an hour or two of commute time. Pros: nice staff Made sure each fisherman got his allotment of fish Cons: Only let us fish for 60-90 minutes. I actually thought the captain was joking when he told us to start wrapping it up at the hour mark. WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE- problematic because a lot of people's lines were crossing and getting tangled and they had us do this strange rotation thing each time we reeled in our line (which was often since halibut can be bait stealers) so every time they hooked on new bait we were forced to awkwardly juggle our pole and relatively heavy weight and hook/bait all the way from the stern to the bow of the boat, forcing other fishermen to have to adjust to allow you to pass. Annoying to say the least. The size of the halibut on the half day trip simply wasn't worth the cost or the time Too much time wasted on getting to and from the fishing spot given the small size of halibut we were catching Next time we'll just rent our own boat and fish for as long as we want! read more

Rainbow is OK for the price, great for beginners. Went out for halibut once and Pollock another time. Tip - go in the AM for half day charter or go with 3/4 day trip for halibut. Too many numbskulls do the afternoon trips. As for Pollock fishing it's good cheap fun but I'll never eat it again, too full of worms! And now I know why the other charter boats chop up gray cod for bait! But if you bread them and feed them to unsuspecting friends and neighbors who eat fish sandwiches at the fast food places they're fine. read more
