Mild mannered soccer mom by day. Ziplining freak by mid-morning? When planning our trip to Alaska, this activity was #1 on my list and happily my oldest son wanted to join me. I'd been raving about ziplining since my first experience in Whistler, BC. This activity was offered at most ports, but my choices were limited by my son's age and weight. Alaska Canopy Adventures has two options, but children and beginners are encouraged to take the Bear Creek course. If I had my druthers, I would take the advanced course with longer zips and skybridges, but I really enjoyed Bear Creek too. The benefit of that course is that in addition to the zips, you have a gorgeous suspension bridge (we had a bear sighting), a short rapel and a fantastic mountain slide. It just kept getting better and better. Our two guides, Brian and Jen, were fantastic. My son is a little scared of heights so they did a great job of helping him get as comfortable as possible trying something outside his comfort zone. At the end of the trip you take a short 4x4 ride and get hot chocolate and cookies at the visitor center. The ranch next door even has reindeer in a paddock, so if you're lucky you might get to see them as you drive by. Even though the trip was a lot of fun, I've got to say I had a better ziplining experience in Whistler. The area here is beautiful, but it is a nature preserve so you can't get all wild and crazy since they don't want to scare off the animals. And this soccer mom likes to scream. read more

Top to bottom this is a wonderful company, providing tremendous zip line adventures in Ketchikan. My 18 year old niece told me that zip lining was on her "bucket list". I mentioned that 18 year old kids probably don't need to make a bucket list but I was happy to take her (we were on a Celebrity Cruise... see my other reviews should you desire). It's now off of my bucket list as well. In fact, I can't wait to go again. The staff made for an entertaining, thrilling, yet safe day of adventure. From the zip lines, to the sky bridge, to the mountain slide, to the views.... all were fantastic. My sister who is not one for adventures of the physical nature was able to easily overcome her fears as a result of the staff instruction, equipment, and attitude. For me, this was the highlight adventure of my Alaska vacation. I was going to zip line in Icy Straight, Hoonah, but decided to go in Ketchikan instead as this tour allowed for more time zip lining as well as a great 4 hour adventure. I think there were 8 zip lines here as opposed to only one in Hoonah ( a long one, but just one). A wonderful experience. I think we paid $179 each from the ship excursion desk. If you call the company before hand, I think you will save a little money. read more

BEST EXCURSION EVER!!!! Anyone who is on the fence about this excursion needs to trust me when I say it will be the highlight of your trip! I cannot say enough about the staff..Dave, Abby, the cute guy who looks like Jake Gyllenhaal...they are a phenomenal group of down to earth, EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE, fun-loving bunch. It was like hanging out at your really cool distant cousins house. Both of my boys (age 10 & 11) told the instructors they wanted to apply for a job there. Dave was so sweet, he told them to put him down as a reference! Seriously, tourists can be tough to handle, but the people at Alaska Canopy Adventures are genuinely interested in sharing in your good time. Tips: wear a water resistant jacket, don't be a dud, ask about their backgrounds, make them laugh, have the hot chocolate afterward, and through some dough $ at the end of your experience. This turned out to be a very fun time. This was my first time zip lining, and I think we picked a great place to do it. Not sure if I will go again, simply because anywhere else will definitely not be as cool as this place was. Upon arrival, you are driven up to the staging building in the back of some very cool vintage Unimogs (one of my favorite old 4x4's, so they already sucked me in!). The staff was friendly and quickly got everyone into their harnesses and through a quick training. Then it was off to zip line. Our two guides were great. Very friendly and fun, without being that obnoxiously friendly and positive type of guide that these places can sometimes have. They were also very knowledgable of the local flora and fauna and had some interesting facts to share. You basically are starting in a tree canopy high up on a hillside (overlooking a beautiful bay), and zip from tree to tree, no man made towers here. You are truly in the canopy of these amazing trees, suspended 80-100 feet in the air, through a total of 8 zip lines, and a couple of suspension bridges. If you are afraid of heights, this may not be for you. You are completely safe and secure the entire time, but man you are high up! This was a lot of fun, and I would highly recommend it. read more

I am certain if you do the Zip Line it would be awesome. We did the Walking Tour, which takes you thru the Rain Forest, an old Saw Mill and a raptor sanctuary...the price was supposed to include seeing a seeing a totem pole carved, but the man was out on family emergency... We did learn some new things about flora and fauna and we definitely saw eagles, but I felt the price was incredibly inflated. If you can get the tour for a special price (far less than the $89) it would probably be better. I feel like if they want to keep charging $89 they need to throw in a free photo with an eagle or a little keychain. read more

Our tour guides were Red and Sara and they were helpful and very nice people. In some ways I didn't think the guides are necessary but I did see the helpfulness of having them after a little bit. There are other guides all up and down the walkways so when they see the bears they radio each other to inform of their location. You could very easily miss the bears if you were on your own. The guides helped us to find the locations quickly and were able to provide helpful information. read more

One of the "1000 things to do before you die." I agree. Now, I have been on other ziplines, but they just don't compare. 1) you are taught how to maneuver yourself here: how to zip fast or slow, stop without slamming into your guide or the tree, pull yourself in if you mess up and fall short. In other words, you just don't sit there. 2) You are gliding through the canopy of a beautiful rain forest. (Really, really, really high up in the air) 3) You don't just zip once. You are on a several hour tour that takes you over 8 different ziplines and 3 suspension bridges. Quiet possibly the funnest thing I did during my entire Alaskan vacation! read more

This was easily in the top 3 things I did in Alaska. You are flying through a Rain forest...anyone who has seen Medicine Man, that's what you are doing. The guides were cool, when they were teaching us, they show us what "not" to do, like spinning, and letting yourself hang; just incase someone got comfortable enough to have some fun. The lines are awesome, you are going tree to tree; sometimes between trees. SIX STARS!!! This is a GREAT experience to go on! If you've never tried it, GO! I took the zipline tour and not its ropes course. The day I went the sun was out, the weather was good and even the bears came out too! Easily one of the best things to do in Alaska. I've actually done the zipline course in the Ketchikan and its Juneau locations. Definitely if you have a choice, go to the Ketchikan one. Juneau site is good, but Ketchikan is by far way better. I took my 12 yo daughter on my 50th birthday trip to Alaska and one of the things she wanted to check off of her bucket list was zip-lining. This experience was one of the best parts of our trip and not just because of the zips, rather because of Collin and Kail, our guides. They were AMAZING! They communicated all safety procedures clearly, helped those who had a bit of fear, and by the end we were all having so much fun. Not only did they work well together, but they also quickly picked up on everyone's personalities and played along with us. I now have a daughter who wants to work at Alaska Canopy when she turns 18. If you are interested in fun. This is the place to be! Zipping through the trees was spectacular and the scenery was amazing. It was the best zip line I have done so far and to make things even better you are in such a beautiful state. It doesn't hurt that the guides (especially Joe P) are nice to look at. If you are planning on going to Ketchikan this Canopy tour is a must do! Definitely worth the money and it is a safe adventure for the whole family. I believe it's around $175.00 but the tour lasts around 3.5 hours and like I said it is well worth it. At the end they let you go rappelling and then you slide down a long slide to complete your adventure. There are roughly 7-8 zip lines that you go down and remember to not break until the guide tells you to otherwise you will get stuck and have to pull yourself in. The guides help you along the way so you don't have to worry about a thing...Have fun! read more

Our tour guides for the zipline course Matt and Jake we're very nice. The course was very fun. Unlike others courses we considered the ziplines were pretty high off the ground which was great and the views were amazing! The only negative was we had a lady in the group who was terrified from the beginning and refused to brake on her own which caused the instructors to have to throw themselves in front of her and grab on each time. They gave her an option after the first 2 lines to go back but she refused. The last time she came in so fast she was half an inch from kicking me in the face which would have resulted in pushing us off the platform! The only bit of advice I have is if your afraid of heights or speed is please don't go and hold up the tour for the rest of the people. read more

Despite the cold, rain, & fog, we had an excellent time zip lining and walking across suspension bridges. We couldn't have asked for better guides- Claire & Brandon. They were safe, light-hearted, knowledgeable, always positive, & professional. Among the knowledge of the sites & flora, they even pointed out a bear while we were on the bridges! I went here to celebrate my 62 year-old mother's birthday. My 65 year-old father also enjoyed the zip-lining & scenery (even though he was afraid of heights!), & it was a truly enjoyable experience with the family. We were first put on a big open jeep-like bus. The sanctuary and views are beautiful. Our group was split into two smaller groups. We were outfitted with our gear in a small room-- the equipment is above par, & even includes rain jackets if you didn't bring your own. I would recommend heavy jeans (what I wore) or even water resistant pants. My fam all had tennis shoes, but I was happy with the hiking boots. We went on a very cold day, & I wish I brought extra gloves because hands got wet under the gloves they provided. They give a community locker to put your valuables in. The restrooms were semi clean, but didn't have toilet paper :( I loved the zip lining. I felt like a monkey-bird, & could have gone on tours all day if not for the price. I feel it was a wonderful experience. At the end we were given metals and hot chocolate. Originally, we had planned to go hiking, but it was POURING rain in the morning, & to my surprise my mom wanted to go zip-lining. It's absolutely safe and serene in the scattered rains and beautiful low fog. At every point, we were clipped-in and secure (even on the bridges) so i felt at ease and just enjoyed. All-in-all, we had an unforgettable day. read more

We did a zip lining adventure with this company on a recent Alaskan cruise. The people were terrific, and the zip line was really fun and fast. I am afraid of heights and some of these platforms are really high, but that made it all the more fun/exciting for me. My kids and wife have no fear of heights, and they too loved it. Some really fast sections. Great, fun, happy guides made us feel comfortable and safe. To add to the positive experience, my daughter left her GoPro at the gift shop, and it was too late to go back as our ship was sailing. We had our front desk make contact, and they not only found it, but offered to mail it back. I was pretty convinced we'd never see that GoPro again, but it's on the way to us as I type this. Super cool adventure, made better by the great staff. HINT: We were on Holland America on the Westerdam, and there was just enough time to get back on the boat when we came back, so if you want some Ketchikan shirts from the shops, get off the boat and do it before you, not after. read more

On a recent cruise to Alaska, hubby and I booked a zipline tour with Alaska Canopy Adventures. It was amazing! Our guides, Brad and Phil, were knowledgable and personable, and their commentary on the local ecosystems was impressive. The platforms are TRULY high, which adds to the thrill: Beware if you're truly afraid of heights. We saw a black bear in the estuary -- a highlight of the trip. The group behind us actually crossed paths with a bald eagle in flight. Promotional materials all say this is a "strenuous" activity, although this description is over-hyped, IMO. Once you've climbed some stairs, the harness and lines do all the work. Plus, if you forget to brake on a landing (like I did once), one of the guides is standing on the second platform to activate a hard brake and catch you. Highly, highly recommend! read more

Zip lining was a bucket list activity for me, and I was determined to do it on my most recent cruise to Alaska (celebrating my 70th birthday). I am afraid of heights--one might think zip lining may not be my best choice of activity. Our guides were Tyler and Brent. They were so patient with me. I suppose my review is really more about them than anything else. Tyler clipped me and reassured me that I could do it. Brent was on the receiving end, and, somehow made sure I got to where I needed to be, as I held tightly to the handles, and didn't brake well. Others have commented on the views. I have done zip lining a few times in Hawaii so when I saw this was available during my trip to Alaska I had to book it. I had super high expectations and they were met and then some. The guides were very friendly (and not in a fake looking for a tip at the end way) and they made sure all of us were listening to their instructions and obeying them. There were 7 zip lines I believe along with a small suspension type bridge and a cool slide at the end. I wish more of the lines were a bit longer but I still had a great time. The setting at Bear Creek couldnt have been more beautiful. We picked wild blueberries and salmonberries while waiting our turn. I thought the slide at the end was a great added bonus. read more
