Another great experience with Ed at Allen's Tree Service. Roundup was accidentally sprayed near the roots of my mom's Japanese Maple. The front half of the tree lost all its leaves. I contacted Allan's Tree Service expecting to pay for some sort of treatment. Instead I was instructed how to flush the product out of the roots by watering and save the tree. I used Alan's Tree Service to remove two trees from my back yard, one large and both in tricky spots along the fence line and under wires. They did a great job. Ed was wonderful for the initial quote: very knowledgeable regarding the trees, possible diseases, and insects. The communication leading up to the service was good, and the crew did a great job that both myself and my neighbors were happy with. Bonus points for the little details. For instance, they had to take down some service wires connected to my house before felling the trees. When they put them back up, they were better than they had been initially. Very pleased with Alan Tree Service! We had close to ten trees cut down in our backyard and they did a great job. This is our second time using Alan. The first time was five years ago, when they took some pine trees down from our front yard. They did it in a matter of a few hours - it was great! This time, the owner returned our calls promptly (unlike two other services we tried to get out to quote us...) He was out to quote in the time frame he stated and the work was done soon after. They even came and took the trees out on the hottest days of the year! Our yard is on it's way to looking great. I used this service last summer (June of 2019), and as a courtesy to the owner I waited to post a review because he worked with us on price (detailed later in the review). We have two large maple trees in our front yard, and both were starting to show some stress; one in particular was dropping a lot of branches. I called three companies for estimates, and ultimately chose Alan's (whose price was in the middle) because of Edward's certification as an arborist, and our desire to keep the trees healthy. Ed's estimate included thinning out the branches, raising the elevation of the lower branches and going up into the trees to examine and "thin out the tops." The total estimate was $650. We agreed to it. I just so happened to be home on the day the crew came because I had a dental visit that turned into a surprise tooth pull, so I went home instead of back to work. Three dudes rolled up and, in total honesty, were on my property for a sum total of one hour, almost to the minute - this included setting up the tools, pruning, chipping all the branch trimmings and cleaning up. I watched the entire thing through my enormous front picture window (I have a small lot, they were working 20ft outside my front window). The guys used only the long pruning saw and the long chainsaw on a stick from the ground - nobody went into the trees and only branches reachable from the ground with the 14' pole pruners were worked on. As they were cleaning up, I muttered to myself, "they better be coming back, this is not worth $650." About 30 minutes later I got a call from Ed - he advised me that the job was completed and could he stop by to collect payment. Without knowing that I was home during the job's completion, he waxed poetic about his guys having gone up into the trees to look at them, and that they were healthy, which isn't true because I watched the entire job from start to finish. I told Ed that I wasn't satisfied with the job, that his guys DIDN'T go into the trees because I was THERE, and that they spent a total of 30 minutes trimming and 30 minutes of set-up/clean-up. Ed remarked on how his guys are efficient, and he advises them to err on the side of leaving branches on the tree instead of being too aggressive. He said he was on-site for my job (he wasn't, because again I watched the whole thing) and felt they did an adequate job. I told him to come by and we would look at the work and discuss payment. He came by later that afternoon and my husband and I spoke with him about the work. We told Ed that we were not willing to pay the full price of $650 for what was effectively 30 minutes of trimming work done by a tool we could rent at Home Depot for $50. SIDE NOTE - we're very handy people - we've rented stump grinders, removed large evergreen trees (30' trees) on our own - we're not afraid of this kind of work. But we hired this job out because we wanted the trees examined by professionals from bottom to top. Ed was not happy with us, he argued that it's not until the guys get to the job that they really see what needs to be done, and he was satisfied with what they trimmed and what was left. We told him we weren't paying in full, so he argued that we had a signed contract and he'd see us in court, but in reality our contract stated that they would go up into the trees and trim, which they didn't, so he hadn't held up his end of said signed contract. Then he argued the semantics of "thinning out the tops" - saying that it didn't mean "thinning out the branches at the top of the tree," it meant something totally different in "arborist terms" and we misunderstood (even though the estimate literally said his workers would go up into the trees). It was unreal. After about 30 minutes of a tense but professional conversation, we agreed on a lower price and paid him immediately. The work that was done was done well, they were efficient, they cleaned up nicely - but the owner lied about the work that was completed and lied that he was on-site for the job; both of which I knew to be untrue because I just so happened to be home that day. I applaud him for being willing to work with us but ultimately he was dishonest with us. Had I not been home, by chance, that afternoon we would've surely been fleeced. I waited to post this review because he did work with us on the price, but ultimately the dishonesty needed to be shared. Not sure I recommend. read more

They took our money and didn't finish the job. We asked them to do what they had provided us in writing, and they stopped returning our calls, even after they cashed our check. Four voicemails over the course of 7 months, and they still won't return our call. The tree we paid them to fix later fell on my neighbor's car. read more

Arborist that knows what he is doing . Got into a tight area and took care of a very large precarious limb over my garage and wires. Left my yard the same as it was before they came due to their diligence and appropriate equipment. Gave me a quote on Sunday evening and limb was gone by Monday evening as the limb was cracked and could have fallen. Price was fair. read more

I really enjoyed working with Alan's Tree service. Ed Martin is the certified arborist who owns and runs the company. He personally came out an evaluated my trees and gave me a delightfully thorough verbal evaluation along with a written quote of recommendations to maintain the tree's health, which was suffering from heart rot. When I ultimately decided to have the tree removed a few weeks later I called Ed back to see if he would be interested in quoting removal options. The quote was fair, and I especially appreciated that they were planning to use climbers instead of a bucket truck. The removal team did a truly impressive job, especially the foreman who was the primary climber and cutter. Branches that I was sure were going to fall on the house were gracefully lowered to the ground using a rope system. Ed came out himself to do the stump grinding which was a very thorough and careful job. The overall cleanup was excellent. Ed and I discussed other tree related matters at the end which I really enjoyed. I like to geek out on information and details, and I found a kindred spirit with Ed. I would gladly recommend Alan's Tree Service to anyone. read more

We recently moved to Michigan and needed some significant 'catch-up' tree pruning, trimming & removal. We called another tree service, but did not get the response we had hoped. So we called Alan's Tree Service (recommended by our son), and scheduled a review and estimate visit. Ed arrived on time, gave an analysis and education of what he thought was needed and a fair estimate. We agreed to the proposal. His crew was back 3 days later and completed the job - took down 5 trees, ground the stumps (all the way down), pruned 4 large trees (35-40 ft heights) and cleaned up a hedge on one side of our house. We couldn't have been happier. We'll use Alan's for future work, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. BTW, our son also had some work done & was very pleased. read more

Informative about tree diseases and care but difficult to get a call back and did kind of a crappy job on trimming my birch tree. The gentleman who trimmed my pine and other tree in the backyard did a very nice job but the gentleman who trimmed my birch hacked the crap out of some of it and didn't even touch the spots that really needed trimming like above my roof or over my neighbors driveway. I had to call DaveyTree service after getting no response from frequent tries to get in touch with this company. read more

Ed's team was out yesterday. Exactly on time and went right to work. Safely removed a 40+ foot Silver Maple from our backyard and trimmed our other trees. We are extremely satisfied. Both with the price and the work performed. Joe was extremely impressive with his climbing skills and the other guys were very friendly and went above and beyond with the stump grinding and cleanup. We have used Alan's Tree Service on and off for several years. We always call them when we want to trim the large trees on our property and want them trimmed in a way that is not harmful to them. Alan's owner, Ed, knows what he is doing, he has real tree training as I call it and I trust him to do what we need and still preserve the tree. When we call he comes out and does an estimate and explains what he is going to do and why he is going to do it that way. They are timely and their prices are fair too. Plus they will also remove stumps and not all tree companies provide that service. No complaints and we will call them again next time. read more

The crew did a good job trimming several trees in my yard, and the price was right but the clean-up was not stellar. Communication has been an issue as well. During the tree-trimming I spoke with Mr. Martin about having more trees planted, and he stated he could get them planted before the end of October. He asked me to email him, and I did so twice but got not response. I then called and left a message a week after I sent the emails and again got no response. I'm disappointed in the lack of communication and follow-through. Now it's too late to plant this fall. read more

I contracted with Alans tree service on August 8th 2019 to remove a tree in my back yard. Mr. Martin said his crew would be out in two weeks depending on the weather. On September 5th I called Mr. Martin who said he was about a week away from my job but he would call the day before. A week later I e-mailed the company and Mr. Martin replied stating they were running a little behind but he would call in a day or two with a firm date. That was almost three weeks ago and still no word. Now Mr. Martin will not return phone calls or e-mails. I called Alans tree service because of the great reviews and because I wanted to do business with a local company. I'm glad he did a good job for those reviewers, but for me I had to call another company to get the job done. read more

Horrible communication. No one answers the phone when you call the "office" - automatic message says your call will be returned that day. That is not the case and IF it is, it will be around 9 or 10 pm. We ended up going elsewhere for tree removal because while Alan's prices seemed fair, the headache of trying to get in touch with these people on a weekly basis was a nightmare and a complete waste of time. Do yourself a favor and go with a company with a reliable office staff who know how to manage a phone and a calendar. read more

Our next door neighbor was getting a quote from Alan's Tree Service so my husband asked if they could give us a quote, too. They came back just a few days later and we're thrilled with their work. Ed the owner is an Arborist who knows what he's talking about. Really on-point pricing and the workers who did the work were friendly, respectful, neat, quick and also extremely knowledgeable about the health of our trees. I don't know if you've tried to get tree trimming done recently, but it's a pain to even get companies to call you back...and the big name tree trimmers' prices are exorbitant.
