Santa Cruz Tire & Auto

Our Volkswagen Tiguan's tire pressure sensor went off while driving towards a family vacation in…read moreSanta Cruz for Memorial Day weekend. I called and set up an appointment with their AI receptionist. The first time I've done such a thing and it was surprisingly easy. I showed up in person and went over the problem. They checked the tire pressure, filled air in the rear tire. They tested the tires, found no leak, and I was able to go on my way after only $25. No hard upsells, just straight forward service. I only lost an hour and a half of vacation time and was able to join the family at the pool. Incredibly thankful for the team here.

Santa Cruz Tire and Auto WAS my go-to mechanic for over 10 years. In the past they were consistent,…read moretheir prices were fair, they were reliable and they never suggested work that was not necessary. I have walked out of there in the past with a $20 bill for service before and thanked them for their honesty. I used to be able to count on them to be communicative and most importantly they treated me (a woman seeking services in a male dominated industry) with respect. Underline that. We'll come back to it. That has changed and changed dramatically. I had a "Maintenance Required" light on in my car. It's an 8 year old vehicle, and it has less than 50K miles. I asked for them to check what the service light was for, do an oil change and to investigate an issue I was having with a seeming drop in power and a delay in shifting gears in the transmission when the engine was cold. I dropped it off at 11am and they said they would reach out to me via the new service portal. The kid working at the front who did intake for me seemed very young and was not someone I had dealt with before. I asked intelligent questions as he posed to me that I could pay for a transmission flush/fill service OR pay for transmission diagnostics. I asked him to have the service techs evaluate what is appropriate/recommended and see if they can check the fluid first to determine (a. if it's dirty, b. if it's low). He said, oh yeah, that sounds like a good idea. I expected them to do diagnostics and get back to me with the work required. It wasn't till 2:30pm that I got an estimate in the portal. They came back and said they rotated the tires, did the oil change, and said my drivetrain fluid was needing to be changed. I asked them about why the drivetrain fluid would need to be changed, and asked if they had checked the transmission fluid as requested. They hadn't. They told me they couldn't check the levels because it didn't have a dipstick. What mechanic doesn't have the means to check the fluids here? I brought it to them *because* it doesn't have a dipstick, and they have the tools/means to check it. The service advisor Alonzo gave me some catastrophic explanation as to why I had to change my drivetrain fluid despite not being able to definitively tell me why he came up with that diagnosis in relation to the reason I brought it in. He just showed a blurry image of a spot test saying my drive train fluid was dirty. The diagnostic he had ran/presented to me in the portal at that time said my transmission fluid was fine. I asked if they had confirmed the level of the transmission fluid as requested, and they said they hadn't yet, and would. They called back an hour later saying that transmission fluid was now actually dirty and recommended changing that too (despite telling me earlier it was fine but also hadn't checked it). WTF. NOW they also added a new diagnosis--my engine mounts were compromised, and they would also need to be replaced. They posted a shady video of my engine rocking back and forth slightly when they revved it. I asked what I would experience as a driver if my engine mounts were bad and the risks. Another catastrophic description of how my 50K car was about to implode if I didn't pay them well over $4K to fix all these issues. I asked if they had taken it for a drive test to see if they could replicate the issue I was experiencing. They did NOT TAKE IT FOR A ROAD TEST AT ALL! WTAF!?? I got it back with the exact same mileage it had when it went in. I'm quite certain that some other ill-informed woman they tried to swindle would have fallen for this but I had my boyfriend (who is a mechanic) on the phone when I called back as backup and a witness after the engine mount issue was posed and the $4500 worth of services they were proposing were denied by me. I asked the service advisor to pass the phone to the manager after I felt he was fully giving me bogus diagnostics (and so did my boyfriend, who said no WAY would my drive train fluid OR engine mounts be an issue at ALL based on what I was experiencing. The video showing the engine moving is exactly what it is supposed to do when it revs). The service advisor put me on hold before I could even finish my sentence, rudely and abruptly. I talked to the owner Karl and let him know how disappointed I was that their business was in the hands of swindlers now. He gave some lame excuse that he was an engineer and his master diagnostic advisor was out that day. (So if he's the engineer why wasn't he overseeing Alonzo's shoddy estimates??) He offered me $50 off my oil change and an apology but this experience left such a bad taste in my mouth that I was so clearly being played. I won't be back. Oh, and the QR code at the front desk I scanned to leave a review goes to a completely different business altogether. Not SC Tire & Auto.
