If I could leave a zero star review for Harold Blackburn and his office I would. Unfortunately, a 1…read morestar review is the lowest I could leave. I used Harold for 2 years successfully for my wife and I tax returns. For our third third year with him, our experience was dramatically different from the previous years. In our third year, Harold was completely unprofessional. For the third year, we provided all documentation for our taxes to Harold via his secure link. We followed up with Harold via email to confirm he received it and his response was thanks. Then when we got client copies of returns, Harold was questioned about the numbers not being accurate. Harold then blamed us for him not having correct information even though he confirmed via email he got it. On top of it, he then tried to charge us an additional $300 on top of his filing fee due to an accounting error he made. When we told Harold we had no problem paying his initial invoice if he corrected his mistake on our taxes Harold refused to correct his mistake. It was brought to Harold's attention that legally we could not sign our tax returns knowing that they're inaccurate. Ultimately, Harold decided to "terminate" us as clients rather than correcting his mistakes. All the information mentioned in this review, I have in emails proving my version of events.

Possibly the most unprofessional individual I've ever dealt with in any profession. Had a nice chat…read morewith him about him doing my taxes, I sent him all the info he requested. Then despite three phone calls and three emails over the span of a month and a half, no response. Talked to his assistant Shane, who informed me that he had indeed received the emails but didn't respond. Now my taxes are late. My advice - any other accountant on the planet is a much better expenditure of your time and money. You've been warned.

I sat waiting to log onto our scheduled meeting, and no one *ever* came. I called the office with no answer and no reply. I understand that it was during tax season and therefore busy, but why then allow your online scheduling program to create an actual appointment? I *NEVER* received a call back to apologize or reschedule. No concern at all. Really horrible experience.

The accountants are all very nice and my parents have worked with all of the accountants there. When I came today, I worked with Pasquale, who was so personable and knowledgeable. Normally I do taxes myself, but this was the first time I paid to get them done and I'm not disappointed that I came here. He did them really fast (especially because I had multiple W-2s and a student loan paper), and he informed me why so many people are getting lower tax returns this year (because the nation is taking less taxes out throughout the year and giving you more in your paycheck). He gave me copies of my tax return and told me how much I will get back before I signed anything. He was so nice because he laughed and said, "If you're happy, then I'm happy!" I was very happy with my return. You can pay for the services here by card or check; however, there is a $5 extra fee for using a card. The office itself is very clean and organized, and there is parking on the street. I didn't have to wait at all because literally no one was getting their taxes done here when I came, so that was nice, but the area where they do the taxes and talk to you is upstairs while the waiting room is downstairs, so you feel some kind of privacy here.

I highly recommend Jim and the firm. M&R Ferber offers A-Z tax filing capabilities for individuals, estates, and trusts. Their web site states they provide business and payroll offerings but this review is limited to my personal tax returns. Jim has a great eye for detail and knows tax law. He's not afraid to say "No!" yet he will also recommend approaches that may suit you, ie accelerate deductions, delay revenues, itemize or take the standard deduction, or change with-holdings. He also prepares "what-if" scenarios. I have a complicated return (variable and non-W2 income, out-of-state etc.) yet his fees are fair & reasonable and completion times FAST! He takes the time to understand you, poses thoughtful questions, and explains process and reasoning. The office provides copies of all your returns for your personal record keeping. M&R Ferber provides coffee and cookies. The offices are clean, comfortable, and filled with tax law and accounting books. The shred bin is visible so there is no doubt they properly dispose of un-needed documents. The parking is free and office easy to find. Suggested improvements: please provide wi-fi while waiting or if we need to access a needed document on-line. Thanks Jim and M&R Ferber, see you next year! Patrick Shaughnessy Chicago, IL

Navigating small business taxes in Chicago can be a headache, but John makes the entire process feel manageable and transparent. The Experience John is incredibly professional but also very personable. Unlike some of the larger, impersonal firms, he actually takes the time to listen to your specific financial situation. He's been in the neighborhood for a long time and clearly knows the ins and outs of both Illinois and federal tax laws. Why I Recommend Him: Responsiveness: He is great about returning calls and emails, even during the peak of tax season. You never feel like just another file on a desk. Accuracy & Insight: He doesn't just "plug in numbers." He looks for proactive ways to help you save on taxes and plan for the next year. Fair Pricing: His fees are very reasonable for the level of expertise and personal attention you receive. Pro Tip His office is conveniently located on Irving Park Road. There is usually street parking available right out front, but if you're coming during a busy weekday, give yourself a few extra minutes to find a spot.
