I called them on…read moreMarch 28th and asked if I could bring my taxes in and they response was sure, so I made it in that day, but after closing so I left it in their mailbox slot. Close to April 18th I called and asked about my returns and they told me if I brought them in after March 28th they would have to file an extension. If they had explained this to me before, I would have taken my returns elsewhere. Now I have to pay over $3000 in penalties, plus I now also owe the IRS money that I must pay by October 15th which I was not prepared to do, in the amount required. This firm is very unprofessional, and I really not sure if the person name Matt, did all he could on my returns. I plan to seek another opinion. BEWARE! before you go to them especially if you are a person of color.

Both…read moreused scare tactics to try and get us to sign immediately and pay, upfront, close to $10K to solve our tax issue. I had already done a lot of the work myself with the IRS and my gut was just not comfortable with what they were saying to me. I had also done enough research that I knew they were probably overpromising what they could do. So I looked up local top tax firms and found the The Tax Defenders. After speaking with Beth, who answered the phone, she told me Joe would be calling me back (yes, the owner of the firm). And he did. I walked Joe through what I had done to date and what others were telling me they could do and he told me I was correct. He told me I could hire them to handle what remained to be done, but I could also do it myself. I had already done most the work. He walked me through what to do next with the IRS, including what to say. We were on the phone for about an hour. He told me to call him back if I had questions. I was so pleasantly shocked. I waited on hold for 2 hours and 10mins that night for the IRS to answer and when they did I followed Joe's instructions and worked out a solution. If I ever have a tax situation that requires help in the future, my first and only call will be to the Tax Defenders (and for those review doubters out there I am not AI, I am a real person).

I recently began asking questions because I had done some research on filing under a Schedule C instead of Schedule E. I'm learning everyday, so I assumed I could ask my tax professional for guidance. Instead, Roberto discouraged me indicating there were no benefits or reason for filing as a Schedule C. I sent him documentation which made sense to file as Schedule C. He reluctantly proceeded processing them. I had more questions, but then he wrote to me stating, "You are too much work for me.. I won't file your taxes. Go find a new accountant." Just like that. After being a customer for so many years this is how he treated me. This was not the first time he was unprofessional, by the way. The previous year, I had started asking questions when he completed the filings; his response to me was, "I get a sense that you are trying to avoid paying me." I confronted him about his lack of professionalism then since I had never failed to pay him in the past. Why I decided to write this review is because I've learned so much from my new accountant. She indeed confirmed that I absolutely should be filing as a Schedule C and explained several benefits and reasons behind this. She also confirmed that as a client, I should ALWAYS ask questions and not blindly allow an accountant to file without knowing what they are doing. It's important to ask questions because ultimately the client has to answer to the IRS. I was so grateful to have found a professional moving forward who truly knows accounting tax laws and also respects you as a client. Roberto in the end proofed he doesn't know what he is doing. He prefers to take the "easy rode, don't ask questions" approach. He disrespects you and makes you feel as if you are wrong for wanting to know more. I used Harold for 2 years successfully for my wife and I tax returns. For our third third year with him, our experience was dramatically different from the previous years. In our third year, Harold was completely unprofessional. For the third year, we provided all documentation for our taxes to Harold via his secure link. We followed up with Harold via email to confirm he received it and his response was thanks. Then when we got client copies of returns, Harold was questioned about the numbers not being accurate. Harold then blamed us for him not having correct information even though he confirmed via email he got it. On top of it, he then tried to charge us an additional $300 on top of his filing fee due to an accounting error he made. When we told Harold we had no problem paying his initial invoice if he corrected his mistake on our taxes Harold refused to correct his mistake. It was brought to Harold's attention that legally we could not sign our tax returns knowing that they're inaccurate. Ultimately, Harold decided to "terminate" us as clients rather than correcting his mistakes. All the information mentioned in this review, I have in emails proving my version of events.
