I have found a home at this school. The faculty and staff here have open minds and open hearts and I am grateful for their acceptance of me and my family. This community is truly special and I am proud to be a part of it. I find hope for the future in everything AWS provides to these students and the world! read more

Publicized concerns about Waldorf schools accepting bullying seems accurate in our experience. The school's administration behaved with arrogance and petulance when we expressed our concerns. read more

Alabama Waldorf has demonstrated a phenomenal ability to understand our two children in their personality and how they learn as individuals. The teachers do an incredible job at knowing the kids and teaching them based on how best the child learns. The classes are not frenetic or distracting like most I've seen. Our kids have learned better because the school tries to incorporate as many of senses as possible in their educational process. This educational style has been especially helpful for our oldest son who has sensory issues. I highly recommend this school. read more

I have experience at AWS. I went there for 5 years and they have been nothing but kind to me. I really love the concept and way of teaching , it has prepared me more than enough for high school. I can understand those who have found this school not to be a good fit for them but those who stay with us have been changed for the better. I recommend this school for kids who may not quite fit in at other schools ( me ) and for kids who just want to be kids and not grow up to fast! read more

If I had it to do again, I would not seen my child to this school. It simply wasn't a good academic atmosphere; and any parent who questions anything the school does is quickly identified as someone who needs to be treated like a pariah. read more

Specialties

Currently enrolling students ages 18 months - 8th Grade. We are the only Waldorf school in Alabama. Our curriculum is nonsectarian and multicultural, and includes plenty of outdoor play and learning. All core academic subjects are integrated with storytelling, art, drama, music, and movement, engaging students in a joyful learning experience. Subject classes include gardening, handwork, and two world languages (Russian and Spanish).

History

Established in 1987.

Alabama Waldorf School began as The Redmont School in the Waldorf Tradition, and was initiated by a small group of Birmingham-area parents who desired a more well-rounded and creative educational experience for their young children than what was readily available in 1987. The school was accredited in November 2015 by the Southeastern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and in March 2016 by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA). AWS is also accredited by Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN).

The only thing I hate are those fees we have to pay at registration. When I went to school, we went for free. These fees are like paying for college. We got free lockers and textbooks. Now your fees include lockers, textbools, and if you want a certain elective that cost too. Other than that everything is cool. I like that they wear their own clothes and can take any kind of book bags.

The mission of Alabama Waldorf School is to cultivate healthy, confident, compassionate learners who excel academically, socially, and civically. It defines academics based on the developmental stage of children from 18 mid through 8th grade. It boasts bringing things at the right time. It defines social excellence in many ways from looping up with the same teacher through Grades 1-8 to learning both Russian and Spanish language and cultures. It defines civics in terms of community. Students and parents alike take on community service projects from collecting jackets for the homeless to putting up playground fences at the new 5901 Crestwood Blvd site. The photos are related to our move and show the new site! Importantly, the school asks that parents limit screen time for children all the way through 8th grade and abide by a healthy food policy for snack and lunch which is brought from home. read more

Excellent school with amazing teachers who love what they do. My kids have attended AWS for over 10 years now, and they've grown into well rounded, balanced, confident learners who approach challenges with enthusiasm. They are diligent workers; always eager to explore new ideas; and love to engage people in conversation. I've seen first-hand how this curriculum has instilled in my children compassion and empathy, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills - in addition to their academic achievement.
