Happy President's Day fun day for son son and me at the beach. Today's review comes from the eyes of my son. As soon as we get to the beach he meets a new friend. Asks if she wants to dig in the sand, be his friend, and the rest is history. The two knock it out of the park. Digging, playing, talking, laughing, and having a grand ole time. We've been here two hours and it feels like we just got here. Now they're eating sandwiches and oranges I made for lunch. He shared one half of the sandwich and his oranges with her. It's such a wonderful and delightful sight to see my child and another play so well and connect so quick. We usually choose the same spot and he has made a handful of friends here. It's a great place to bring your kids to have fun. read more

Came to Ala Moana Beach to settle down and enjoy the beach before the Waikiki fireworks show started. This beach isn't as nice as other beaches we've been to in Hawaii, but still nice :-) We came here because we didn't want to deal with the parking situation by Waikiki beach. Oʻahu's nickname is "The Gathering Place," and nothing says that more than Ala Moana Beach Park on a sunny afternoon--it's like half the island got the same memo. This beach park was built on old wetlands in the 1930s, then turned into a sandy paradise in the '50s. Magic Island was added in the '60s. Located across from Ala Moana Center and within a frisbee's throw from the swanky neighborhood of Kakaʻako, it's where locals come to exercise their ancestral rights of cooking meats over flame, talk story under a tree, surf and fish with da best friends. The water within the protective reef is quite calm, which makes it perfect for swimming, paddle-boarding or just frolicking but just watch your step. The bottom drops off precipitously. One minute you're in waist-deep water, the next you're free-diving to Atlantis. But it's not all beach vibes. There's tons of green space if you'd rather ponder about existence under a palm tree, play a robust game of flag football or bbq with 30 of your closest braddahs, sistas , unkos and cuzzins. And if you head toward the Diamond Head side of the park, Magic Island offers another chill beach area --super safe and perfect for families, sunset photos, or pretending you're in a Hawaiian travel brochure. Make sure you get Diamond Head in the background. Plenty of showers scattered along the beach to get that salt water of your skin. Lifeguards on duty from 8 am to 6:30 pm. Came here yesterday after our hotel concierge recommended it. Grabbed some poke and then went into the water which was so relaxing. There are no waves so it's very easy and you feel like you're in a pool. I really enjoyed it! Would highly recommend it! read more

Ala Moana Beach Park is a pretty big and convenient spot right in the heart of Honolulu. One of the best things about it is the location -- it's directly across the street from Ala Moana Center, so it's super easy to grab something to eat, do a little shopping, and then head over to the beach to relax. I really enjoy picking up takeout from the mall and eating by the water while watching the sunset. The views are beautiful, and the water is calm and nice for swimming or just floating around. However, the beach itself isn't perfect. The sand is a bit rough and not as soft as some of the other beaches on the island, and there are quite a few rocks when you go into the water, so you might want to wear water shoes. The park area is large and has plenty of space to walk, jog, or picnic, but it's also known for having quite a few homeless people around. Most keep to themselves, but it can make the area feel a little uncomfortable, especially if you're by yourself. I definitely wouldn't recommend coming here alone at night. Overall, Ala Moana Beach Park is great for its convenience, accessibility, and sunset views, but it's not the most peaceful or pristine beach on Oahu. Great beach away from busy Waikiki but not too far either. It's located across the street from the mall. There's a huge parking lot but there's also a lot of activities there's so it does get busy. They have a path to walk or run and a park area especially to watch the sunset. read more

In 2019, we wanted to come here, but we ended up not having enough time so, after my work trip in 2024, in Honolulu, I chose this Beach to come to. It was also close by to our hotel & easy to get to by car. Also, it seemed as though, it still wasn't busy, which was great. Had a good time, relaxing after a week of work. Was it the best? I don't think so, but like I said, it was convenient, and we haven't been here until that time. Also, the water was a little bit murky. Some of our coworkers that live in Hawaii did warn us about that. We still wanted to check it out anyways. Highlight: We did see a turtle pop up his head in the water. :) read more

We really enjoy this beach! Tons of sand, great water access, easy parking, straight across from the mall. There are a few homeless people but they never bother and the beach can get a little littered because of the constant influx of people coming and going so be sure to pick up after yourself. TIPS & TRICKS: * There are lots of things that happen at Ala Moana Beach Park, races, yoga, paddle boarding, water polo. Just hop online and see what's happening when you're here! * Bring food and water and post up all day, it's a nice spot. Home of our recent college reunion. Thrilled to see we could reserve a designated space in advance. And we were fortunate to grab the space at the very beginning of the Magic Island Parking lot. Important while planning this reunion for over a year to bring people from Canada, Taiwan, and continental United States together again. When in Hawaii, visiting a beach is a must! The beach wasn't too packed when I was there. Visitors were swimming, chilly, lounging, BBQing, running, etc. This beach is not as beautiful as other ones around Hawaii but it is good enough. I was really there only for taking some photos with my swim wears hehe. Didn't stay too long here since the sun was beaming that day and it got hot. Parking is free! read more

During the past visits to Honolulu, we have not been able to see the Friday fireworks mainly due to dinner engagements at restaurants. But on this recent visit, we got together with Peter C and Li Y and to watch the fireworks at Ala Moana Park. We decided to picnic at the park and we bought food from Foodland and dessert from Pipeline. We set out tarps on the ground and sat along a wall to enjoy our food and catch up on life. We even saw a nice sunset looking out towards the water. Then at 7:45, we were able to see the fireworks shoot up from the nearby Hilton Hawaiian Village. A great evening with friends and we finally saw the fireworks too! read more

Times have changed guys. This beach is safer than before (security, well lit, recently remodeled), clean (some of the clearest waters I've seen on this side of the island, functioning showers, lots of trash cans, people cleaning the beach daily of litter), and it's conveniently located close to everything! Easy to find on Google Maps, lots of parking, and the sense of community? CRAZY! If you ever need to witness the statement that Hawai'i is a melting pot I encourage you to come here on a Saturday morning at 5:30 AM. People from all over are enjoying the splendor of our state. The beauty of Honolulu... Though there's another page for the Regional Park and Magic Island as well this beach certainly is Ala Moana Beach. Place for us all to gather for a swim, sun and relax among this public beach the stunning endless view of the beautiful blue ocean is one that we all still come and enjoy for various reasons. Mine is usually for the sunset and photo ops whenever I want to take pics of various jewelry I made or on this visit a work bestie who surprised me with a early Easter goodies. Truly a beautiful gift of a potted pink rose with a Peep and various treats and the cutest pink bunny has me thinking that I really need to take a picture of it properly and what better place than right here at Ala Moana Beach. This is such a great beach if you're near the city, but don't want to be in the center of the craziness in Waikiki. There's a large shoreline and the waves were calm - perfect for paddle boarding or swimming. There's also a park and large grass area so it's a perfect place for a beach BBQ or hangout! read more

There's nothing like breathing in the fresh ocean air. It just relaxes and calms me. This is one of my favorite beaches to go it. It's huge . It spans all the way from Kamakee St. to Atkinson Dr. The water is crystal clear and pristine. The sunsets are pretty in various shades of orange, pink and yellows. Couples are always taking wedding photos and getting married here against the gorgeous backdrop of Diamond Head. Every single time that I've been here, there have been wedding couples. There's a trail around the Magic Island area. You can always see people walking, jogging or biking. On the grassy areas, people like to picnic and have barbecues. On Friday nights you can have a front row view of the fireworks that the Hilton Hawaiian Village puts on. It starts at 7:45pm sharp and lasts about five minutes. read more

Love that this beach is conveniently located downtown across from the mall with free parking. Surfers, rowers, swimmers, runners come here to exercise. There are large tennis courts and areas to picnic. But...there are some sore points to the park. The city and county workers do try to pick up as much as they can but it's a tough job. I do love dogs but do not bring mine to the beach. Even with the no dogs allowed there are canines running on the beach defecating in the ocean where we swim...I have seen floaters. Pet owners that seem not to care about respecting others on public property. The amount of shopping carts and tents littered on the edge of the park. We have seen needles and alcohol bottles cast on the grass. Stolen bicycles piled up on the fringes of the park in huge plastic containers. All very sad and not exactly areas where you want to bring your child. The bathrooms..I do not know where to begin. County has replaced the toilets, doors and sinks many times but why bother. The poor county workers have said these are the filthiest bathrooms...that they have to go in to spray with a high power hose to clean everything first. I think ignoring all the factors and focusing on just the ocean and places to exercise as well as free parking though makes this park pretty awesome. read more

Located across Ala Moana Shopping Center is Ala Moana beach park and Magic Island we're you can enjoy the beach, play tennis, surfing, swimming, running or jogging, biking and picnicking and even fishing. You are allowed to cook and enjoy this beautiful beach and park and they have a lagoon in Magic Island if you want to take the younger children for a swim is a little more calm. They also have business there teaching yoga, Martial art and surfing, besides L & L Drive in if you didn't bring a picnic basket you can pick up plate lunches and drinks there and shave ice on a hot day. They have lots of free parking, but during the summer and weekends it might be hard to find parking, so go early in the morning or later in the day and on Friday night parking is hard to find because of the fireworks display that can be seen from the park. Morning walk to get some steps in, lunch birthday party, watching the sunset with a group of friends while having a picnic on the beach at this park is the ultimate place to celebrate any and all kinds of occasions. Three restrooms are located and one giant one in the ocean whenever nature calls. Best part about this park is asking the dog owners if I could pet their dogs in the morning and they are usually so friendly and the dogs are nice and fluffy. Can't believe I never reviewed this beach! This is the first place I come to whenever I visit this island. The water is so calm and the sand is pretty soft. There are some rough parts where it's kinda rocky but for the most part it's pretty nice. It doesn't usually get too crowded except on weekends and there is lots of parking. There are many people walking or running or even on rollerblades. There are picnic tables and some tennis courts as well. The water is perfect for just swimming and chilling, no big waves like on the North Shore. There are some homeless people camping but it's not too bad. Tell me a place that suits your social needs, sunset cravings, self-care moments. It's all packed here! Ample parking lot with plenty of street parking. A volleyball court all the way to the corner of the beach (which I think is the best side for some quiet solo beach bathing). I know that it can get busy, the rocks in the water can be kind of rough, water isn't as clear as much beaches. But turn that eye and see the accessibility to beauty and fun that this beach has to offer. read more

Love Ala Moana beach when I was little we came here every summer visit. It's been over 17 years since I've been back the difference being before sunset time usually I'd be here from morning to afternoon. It is so nice before sunset great views as well. Although today 3/21/23 it rained on us right before sunset but still got some good shots in. The best part of this beach is the calm waves and lot of grass space for picnics. Overall a great beach to see and visit especially for a first timer but it is always soothing coming here and just looking out into the ocean. read more

Sorry for the low rate on this beach. Unfortunately, Ala Moana isn't like it USE TO BE 10-15 years ago & prior... but for the most part, this is the most convenient beach on this side of the island. Parking, area, space, ocean, sand, walk-way, trees, grass... You can't go wrong. Don't get me wrong, you can STILL have a great time here! It's just that it's NOT like before. BEACHWISE. From what I remembered, 3 stars is WAY BETTER than what I SHOULD RATE. For me, I SHOULD GIVE THIS A 1 STAR!! Why?! Because I'm very disappointed to see what I was told HOW ala moana use to be in the OLD DAYS, TO WHAT I remembered, COMPARED TO WHAT IT IS NOW! Sorry guys... i know there's probably a few people thinking I'm self-righteous. But i'm not trying to be. I'm honestly telling you truthfully, if you use to come to ALA'S 15 years ago and prior... you'd be living in the best days of your life. I don't know WHAT HAPPENED or WHAT THE STATE OR C&C DID... but whatever is was, it RUINED one of OAHU'S MOST LOVED BEACH OF ALL TIME. Now, to enjoy what I once had as a child til my adulthood, I'd have to go to Kapolei. To be more specific, Ko'olina Beach front just to have BOTH luxury & comfort of swimming. Now... this a is a place to run laps, swim laps (if you CAN make it past the first 5 feet of pokey rocks & coral) & have some fundraising event or to just chill. Magic island would be a more better area suited for families to swim and relax. But, leave before the sun sets. TRUST ME, if it's a hot and muggy night, you'll have wonderful visitors "FLYING" their way to you & it ain't gonna be as wonderful as it sounds. LOL! Maybe bbq with the family, birthday parties and whatnot is ok. But to have that ONE SPOT which EVERYONE SHOOTS FOR, is hard to get. Especially if you're not there first thing in the morning. If you're visiting Oahu and was told Ala Moana is the best beach to go to... You've clearly been misinformed. It USED TO BE ONE OF THE BEST SPOTS. BUT NOW, you'd be better off making the drive out to the west going to Koolina or to the far east and making your way to the North Shore. Better beach options there. But, because YOU'D be on the WINDWARD SIDE, you'd experience more of RAIN & DARK skies than leeward, town side. If you're vacationing in Waikiki, best option is... STAY IN WAIK'S & go beach THERE! You'll have more better chance of SWIMMING than you do here at ALA'S. In the whole 3 1/2 mile long beach, the first 5 feet upon walking into the water is ALL POKEY ROCKS & CORAL & SHARP POINTY EDGES that will guarantee scrape, scratch or damage your feet, legs, etc. THAT'S A PROMISE! Then, IF YOU'RE LUCKY.... you'll find a spot deep enough to float OR swim in. Otherwise, you'll be treading rocks the whole time. So, be mindful of the spot you choose. If you don't know how to tell the depths of the waters... I'D ASK SOMEONE TO POINT YOU INTO THE BEST SWIMING SPOTS. read more

First and favorite beach to visit in Waikiki. This beach has the best sunsets and great for outdoor bbq and family/friend functions. In the summer they have fireworks every Friday at 8pm and parking is free throughout the week. The beach is clean and has no waves, you just chill and swim. The bathrooms are a bit crowded and can have a pungent smell but what else do you expect from a public bathroom? Ala Moana Beach is still pretty dope and such a summertime vibe. read more

Hubby, daughter and I came here to enjoy the beach, sand and water. We needed to kill some time and wait until traffic dies down. Plenty of parking along the small road the goes through here. Free parking and no meters which is a plus but no pets or dogs are allowed on this beach because of the poop the dogs make and some people don't bother to pick up their dog's poop. I definitely love going to the beach and I feel like I get darker and more tanned every day. I highly recommend coming here if you're visiting or even if you're a local, it's a nice place to hang out and relax. Swimming is allowed and just basically lying on the sand to get a tan. 6-16-21 sunshine, blue skies, vanilla blue ocean- what could make it better? Found a tabled bench on the high ground where we used to have Moonlight Picnics. Today we were swarmed by pesky flies but it could have been cuz my spicy garlic chicken bento smelled too yummy. Came across several men working in the park bagging trash and emptying ashed charcoal. Choose carefully the bench you sit on- the first seemed covered with dirt or mold so we moved. Fortunately the plastic bag our food came in was large enough for my seated derrière. There didn't seem to be a breeze at the time but lucky we found a table shaded by one of the banyan trees. The beach goers were spread out and it was pretty much quiet except for someone's radio then later a man getting his groove on dancing down a few stairs. Coming on a hump day was easy to find parking and a table for lunch. The nearest table was a soccer kick away and she was grilling, the smoke heading in the direction towards the water. Her lucky family will have a delicious meal once they get out of the ocean. The beach is a nice break and offers stress relief looking out at the sky and water. Happy summer everyone! read more

I had time on my hands after I dropped my wife off at the Ala Moana Hotel. I'm just strolling along and enjoying the view. This beach is just beautiful. Be sides the beach they have large open areas for picnicking. The park is used for many events, such as the fourth of July fireworks show and the Japanese floating lantern ceremony. They have a few benches scattered throughout the park ,but I wish they were more. Enjoy. read more
