Polo Nord ("The North Pole") is the oldest and most historic gelateria in the city of Naples--but it is far from the best.
I definitely respect the fact that they make their gelato fresh every day, and that they have been a family-run business for three generations over a span of nearly 100 years. Their location right by Da Michele and Trianon, two pizzerias you most certainly should be checking out, is convenient, and is the main reason I stopped in.
I tried several flavors, including Bacio (chocolate & hazelnut) and Pear Cheesecake, but my impression was that consistency was not all that different from American ice cream. For me, the best part of gelato is its dense, naturally milky consistency that clearly sets it apart from American ice cream.
