Great place. I'm not trying to set women back, but I'll say it, I'm a woman that hates going to the mechanic because I've had such crummy experiences in the past. This place was recommended to my gf by her female friend, so that definitely helped my decision in trying Al's. My gf's old Subaru was struggling so she had to take it in. They gave her the honest answer - "we can put in a whole new generator or we can put a patch on it so it'll run long enough for you to get a new car." Awesome. Done. Patch me up so I can function just a little while longer. I took my car in for an odd noise - they figured it out and gave me a call right away the next day. We went in, they explained it, made sense (yes, I googled it just to make sure the quote was around what it should be), dropped the car off the next day. They called and said it was ready, I asked if they could put in a new battery as well. Easy. When I went to pick up the car, they explained again what they did and showed the piece that was torn up and causing the issue. These guys have easy drop off/pick up, they're quick and efficient, and they're just nice guys. This will probably be our mechanic as long as we're in the Somerville area. read more

Went to fill up on gas, they have full serve pumps. I guess they were a bit busy so it took a second. Would be a great position for a high schooler trying to make some extra money to just watch the pump while the mechanics work on cars. read more

Came to swap out my tires. The mechanics here are very knowledgeable and thorough. The mechanic who did my tires actually explained what he was doing and why because the last mechanic used some product that gunked up my rims. I'll be back for other services. read more

Al and his Sons are the best! They set me up with a day/time for me to take my car in that was convenient for me. They looked at it as soon as I arrived and even kept me company as I was waiting. They showed me exactly what was wrong and explained what work needed to be done. I brought it back on my day off and they had it to me by the end of the day. Brought my car to the dealership for an oil change and the next day, sounded like my exhaust had a leak. They had also mentioned I "needed" a bunch of other work including $245 to fix the map light over the dash. Had a few friends recommend these guys so I stopped in, made an appointment, and they fixed the exhaust and replaced the bulbs in the map light, ALL for less than what the dealership was going to charge for the lights! OK when it comes to care repairs it can be a bit intimidating for a girl. But whenever I go to Al & Sons I know I can trust these guys, they are honest and reliable. On a few different occasions I have had to bring my (very old) car in for service. I trust that they are doing what is necessary and not taking me for a ride. No pun intended. Love these guys. They are honest beyond. They do great work and charge fairly. A true neighborhood garage.

My brake pad light was on in my Audi. I brought the car to Gene. Once he inspected the brakes, he told me the pads showed some wear, but were okay and didn't need to be done. So they just recommended changing the oil because it was long overdue. I had not been driving the car for months because I was fearful of a big repair bill, given the car is older and cost several thousand 3 consecutive years. I wished I had brought it in a lot sooner! I feel comfortable taking my car to Gene, and find them to be very honest and pleasant to do business with. As a woman, it's important to feel confident when taking my car into the shop. Al & Sons is old school - initially I stopped in for gas and they washed the windshield. I thought I was in a time warp! I normally don't make the effort to do this, but these guys deserve it. Trust is all that matters to me when it come to car repair, and I trust these guys. They provide great service at reasonable costs. They give you options.: Option A will cost $ ___, Option B will cost ___ but I recommend B. They try to save you money. I took my Volvo station wagon in today. I had another estimate from my " former" local mechanic for over $1500. ( My wife and I joke that no matter what the problem was the estimate always was always $1500) Al & Sons fixed the problem for just over $200 ( less that the estimate) and my car works great. I have been having my car serviced at Al & Sons for the past four or five years. They were recommended to me because of their honestly. Indeed, when I visit another shop for an oil change, they inevitable tell me that my so-and-so needs fixing. I then take the car to Al & Sons and they tell me I don't need anything done. They have saved me from doing a number of unneeded repairs. They have replaced my brakes, and installed a new muffler over the years. (On the latter repair, the charge for the muffler part was excessive compared to what it sells for at a part store.) That was the only negative experience I have had there. Today, I brought my car in because it was make some strange noises in a couple of places. Dave test drove the car, and then moved or secured some things that were causing the vibration/noise. When I took out my credit card to pay, he told me to put it away. What repair shop have you ever visited that spent time and their expertise to fix your car and didn't charge you? Amazing. read more

Been getting gas here for some time. Great price. Had a tire fixed quickly, easily and inexpensively. Had oil change done quickly and correctly. I got a new tire at ntb and the guys told me I needed brakes. I just recently lost my job so I am watching every penny. I took the car to al & sons and gene took off my tires and told me my brakes were fine! Not only did he save me $ from a " fraud" brake job but he rotated my tires ( something ntb should have done) for a very minimal amount. The fact that all the previous reviewers gave Al & Sons 5 stars clearly indicates how awesome these guys are. SO professional, SO nice. Thankfully I live close to the shop so I don't go anywhere else for gas, but I would literally drive out of my way just to give them business. I had a recent issue with my Volkswagen and Gene and David spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out what was wrong with it.
