I came in during the middle of the class and one of the professors greeted me warmly and encouraged me to get in on the class! I was really impressed with the class and the great instruction. In a small town, they really created a strong atmosphere for learning and community. The instructors were very clear on the details and went around and made sure we were executing them correctly, which is definitely not always easy to do with a large class. Even their fundamental classes had great details that a seasoned grappler can benefit from! Lastly, the sparring was great. People were friendly, competent, and competitive! In my rolls, I felt safe with my training partners and didn't feel anyone was trying to win at all costs. I highly recommend this place for all people and will be back if I'm ever in the area.

One of the top things on my list of goals for 2017 was to finally begin some mixed martial arts…read moretraining, specifically - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. After moving to Warren, PA for work in January, I began my search for a place to train. Fortunately, about 30 minutes north of me in Jamestown, NY, I found Kinetix Combat Sports & Fitness. Kinetix offers BJJ and Muay Thai for both adults and youth - as well as a Women's Kickboxing class. For Jiu Jitsu - all of the instructors have their Black or Brown belts through the BJJ Revolution Team under Julio "Foca" Fernandez. For Muay Thai - all instructors are certified through the Thai Boxing Association of USA. For a beginner like myself - the smaller class sizes are a huge advantage, as I am able to gain more personal feedback and instruction during regular classes. Every partner or instructor I have ever rolled with or drilled with has been humble and patient with me as I try to improve my skills. After a few classes and getting to know the familiar faces, Kinetix starts to feel like family. Get in touch with Kinetix, come in for a class, and see what you've been missing out on. See you on the mat.

Classes for MMA/Boxing and other martial arts occur 3 times a week, and each class is roughly an hour long. As far as instruction goes, there is 1-2 instructors, depending on their availability. Most of the hour is spent going through drills, with the last 15 minutes or so dedicated to either light sparring or a conditioning drill. The classes aren't bad, as most of the students attending are beginners, but there is a sense of constant repetition throughout each session. That could be a good thing, or a bad, depending your actual level of skill. It seems that Titan also used to be twice the size. Now, it has been cut in half due to the other side now being LionHeart CrossFit. That, and there probably was a cut in the number of students attending class. Nonetheless, it is decently priced, as other martial arts classes in cities cost well over $100. As far as the gyms that you get with you paid membership, well they're worth about $10. I wouldn't pay much more than that because all the equipment is old, and the places just kind of smells. LionHeart is better than North Club, but the equipment at Penn State's facilities is just much better. The only positive thing is that it doesn't get crowded like Penn State's facilities.

KEMPO MARTIAL ARTS

KEMPO MARTIAL ARTS

I am unable to recommend Kempo Martial Arts. My son attended this dojo for three years: the first…read moreyear was excellent; the second year was terrible; and the third it was time to leave. The first year, the owner, George, played a significant role in the business's operation and the care that he had for the place showed every week. My son loved going to karate every week and often would come home and talk about his favorite activities of the day. The second year, however, was a completely different story. One of the sensei's would routinely fondle and make out with his girlfriend in front of the children, and two of them had issues with appropriately communicating with--and in front of--the children. My son would routinely tell me that he felt uncomfortable in the class, especially with one sensei acting so inappropriately in front of him and the others, and that he no longer wanted to attend karate. I contacted the owner, George, and twice spoke to him about the inappropriate behavior, as well as the poor communication issue between the leaders. One of the sensei's would consistently argue with the other and complain about being told what to do. George said that the two were "just joking," but that was not how my son or father, who often picked him up from karate, felt their interactions went. In any event, George assured me that things would change, and for a few weeks they did; then shortly after, the behavior devolved back into the previous pattern. My son wanted to quit at year's end, but we pushed him to stay the course and not give up. He stayed the course, and I regret that he did. This year started poorly, with my son telling me that even George, the owner and the leader whom my son admired and greatly respected, had begun teaching class in ways that my son felt were not conducive to learning. The groping had finally ended, but the odd treatment of the children continued. We finally pulled Thomas from karate early November of this year, and I contacted George about my son no longer attending. I also requested a refund for December because my son would no longer be attending. George told me that I would get no refund because they do not get refunds, despite the fact that I told him that he could keep November as a "two-weeks" notice rule, even though I should not have to, and he told me that they "tell people that they do not get refunds." I never signed anything and they never told me or my father or anyone else responsible for picking up or dropping off my child that a refund would not be honored. What is the point of paying ahead if they're simply going to take the money and keep it? I am currently in the process or reporting George and his company to the BBB, local chamber of commerce, and probably pursuing them in court for the refund. I cannot recommend this business and, in fact, would recommend against taking your children here. Your kids deserve better.
