The cashier, a gentleman with sandy red hair, gave the customer ahead of me excellent service. He was friendly, talkative, asked if the customer had a Rewards membership, took the time to explain the program, handed him his bag, and waited until he walked away before calling me to the register. When it was my turn, there was no greeting or conversation. I placed my book on the counter, and he simply rang it up and said my total. Only as I was paying did he quickly ask if I had a Rewards card, almost as an afterthought. Before he had even put my receipt in the bag, he was already calling the next customer over. I had a question, but he rushed through his response so quickly that it felt like he couldn't wait to move on. The difference in how I was treated compared to the customer before me was very noticeable. I left feeling like I was an inconvenience rather than a valued customer. I've always enjoyed shopping at this location, which is why this interaction was so disappointing. I hope management reminds staff that every customer deserves the same level of courtesy and attention.

The décor is remarkable - it's clear that the owners were very intentional about making the space feel like art, but also welcoming. Bold colors with lots of windows for natural light, and thoughtfully curated mini spaces throughout the café really make you feel like you're escaping the outside world while letting the sun shine in. And the food - scrumptious. The tomato bisque soup is made fresh onsite and from scratch, and is so delightful. i also have enjoyed their salads and teas. Basically - get thee to The Book Cellar. Those are the books sell for a lot of money here, especially if the writer is no longer alive. I bought a used copy of a book (hardcover) by Michael Lewis, not signed by him. Michael Lewis is from New Orleans but lives in the SFBA. Why are Southerners such good writers? Especially in a part of the country that tends to be very undereducated. I saw Forrest Gump (hardcover) signed by the author too. Now I know what Winston Groom's signature looks like. Winston Groom is from Alabama but born in D.C., and he eventually moved away from the South to NYC. Of course, lots of David Sedaris books here. He's another Southern writer from North Carolina but born in NY. He lives in England now (where his mother is from).

The girl that had been staring at me within that time finally said are you ready. Acting dumb like she hadn't seen me. She then said her register was close and pointed me to the manager who finally noticed I was there. Miraculously. He said his registered was closed and told me to go to the cafe. I would like to point out how they looked at me like why are you still here. Gtfa. Rude folks that night. Except for the girl in cafe who waited on me. She just seemed spaced out. In another world.
