I learned a lot more then that I learned self discipline, respect, and how to be independent. Not only were they my instructors they became more than just friends. They became family to us. Still to this day when I walk into the dojo I feel like I'm walking into my own home always getting that warm greeting welcome. This is by far my one and only karate school I will ever go too. I'm getting my kids ready to go to their school in the near future so they can have the exact knowledge and connection I have with the pipers and their school. Texas Storm Kenpo Karate is a black belt school they are motivated and dedicated and they are there to do there best and be there best!

I went here a few weeks ago for a belt test for my friend. I've always found martial arts very…read moreinteresting and I've even lived in Japan for part of my life. This Kenpo school seemed very intense vs some of the other martial arts that I've witnessed and been involved with, I worked for a Muay Thai instructor for about two years. Any way. While I know there are differences in the schools of thought and the level of discipline that is needed in each practice I always knew there to be one thing in common. Respect. Respect for the 'class room, the art, the student, the teacher, just through and through everything was based on respect. I found it very concerning that this school didn't seem to follow that. They spoke of money openly and about their policies on their tests. Not unusual but they did it in a joking manner that I've know to only be associated with people who were clearly taking advantage of the individuals they were taking money from. This was after the conclusion of the belt test itself. As for the instructor himself, and I do apologize for the fact that I cannot remember his name just that he was the owner/founder/head instructor. Well I know belt tests can be rough, but there was a harshness that seemed to be contained by the man, like if there wasn't an audience and wasn't a live video going he would have been acting differently. That he was in himself restrained in what was his natural state. I hadn't intended to write any reviews but after over hearing a conversation between a mother and son tonight I felt a warning needed to be put out there. To protect the individuals involved I will not be using their names. However, while eating out tonight I couldn't help but over hear this family talking. When I inquired further I discovered that tonight it appears that the instructor called one of his students out to the front of the class. From what I gathered this isn't unusual. But he then proceeded to curse out, berate, and threaten to have his 'black belts come in and beat this students ass' and then kick out seemingly ban this student over what appeared to be a comment they made on social media that the instructor didn't agree with. I called my friend who attends this school and he admitted that he isn't surprised that this happened. While I can appreciate the idea that one is responsible for what One posts on a social media site -such as Yelp, Twitter, or Facebook- there is no reason for someone in a leadership, instructor role to do that. Publicly shaming someone who had put their trust in that person's leadership. From what I gather this follows more of the unprofessional and what now seems to be abusive behavior and I will not be allowing my children to attend this school.

I looked around at a number of schools in the area for my son. I wanted to enroll him in karate not…read moreto teach him to fight, but because I wanted him to learn self control, community, respect, and also to help him with his strength, especially in his core. My son is special needs and started at age 6. The Sabumnim there realized pretty quickly that a full class setting wasn't a good fit for him. So they sat down with us and rather than say "we can't do this" like so many places had in the past, he said "I think he would do better in private lessons for a while." WOW. So we did that. Still very reasonable in price, but it allowed my kiddo to learn in a setting that was appropriate for him. We did that for 2 years until the instructors invited him into class. Now at age nine, he is almost ready to move up to the bigger kids classes and start the full belt path. The kindness, the patience that the entire Karate Workshop family has is amazing. They understand his issues, but they don't bow to them. He is accommodated to a point, but if his behavior is out of bounds, they call him on it and there are appropriate steps taken to work past it. They don't do the "every six months or weeks you move up a belt" thing here. If you are looking for them to give you a belt rank just for showing up, this isn't the school for you. You or your child have to work to earn it. When you get those stripes and ranks, it's because you deserve to have it. You can actually do what is expected at that level. They also make sure they build community there. All of us feel it, feel welcome and like we matter. We use each others services and promote each other's companies and work. It's a pretty amazing place all around.

I am a…read morestudent, a parent, and a coach at The Forge and being part of such a supportive, fun, challenging, inspiring group has improved my life and myself in so many ways. The combination of physical and mental challenge appeals to the novelty seeking part of my brain in a way that pure strength training never has. I have found a tangible peace and calm through the combination of striking and grappling training that is offered here that I almost can't explain but everyone I train with seems to understand because they feel it too. The sense of accomplishment earned from a challenging roll, the thrill of perfecting a technique, the peaceful exhaustion (endorphins anyone?) after classes all work to counteract the general stress and anxiety of life. Something else that really speaks to me about The Forge is the way that the classes accommodate all skill and strength and age levels. The way that Krav Maga is trained here allows each individual to know their own capabilities and walk through life with awareness and confidence. My kids are not only getting a better version of their Mom as I train, they are experiencing the same mental and physical benefits that I am through their own classes. They started in the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu program and we enrolled them in the kid's Krav Maga classes as well when that became available. Watching the all the kids in class increase in confidence and skill, seeing them gain greater control over the movement of their bodies, has been amazing. They look forward to each of their classes with a miniature version of the same supportive and inspiring type of friend group that the adults have come to rely on here. The environment here is so uniquely friendly and inviting while teaching serious, real world self defense strategies. Again I'll say that I wholeheartedly and highly recommend that anyone who is looking for great self defense training and an amazing supportive environment come check out The Forge Martial Arts Academy.

The kids learn discipline and karate skills in a fun environment. One of the things that I really like is their method for advancement. Since it takes a while to move up belts, the kids can earn stripes in between belts in order to keep them motivated. The only "negatives" would be that some classes are taught by younger black belt students and they sometimes have trouble keeping the littles in line. But the adult instructor is usually nearby to assist when needed. Definitely give them a try if you're looking for a safe (and indoor) way to keep your kiddos active.
