Karachi Restaurant - Karachi gristle keema April 2021

I have been a patron of the Karachi since 1973 when they we're in the cellar and a curry cost 50p…read more Recently I collected my take away orders including a keema. The keema I received was not the keema I had come to expect. More onion base than mince. The mince was very low quality with large lumps of gristle. The taste was predominantly "Cumin" & ""Chili" instead of the usual aromatic magic of masala. The prices have gone up which I don't mind but the magic has gone and quality plummeted. I wouldn't feed it to the dog, it went in the bin along with my patronage. THE END of a love affair.

All my trips to Karachi have been spur-of-the-moment things; stepping out of the cinema into (sort…read moreof) fresh air and suddenly realising we're all ravenous, our stomachs and noses lead us to the closest curry emporium. If we're not in the mood for the drunken students of Great Horton Road, we're usually drawn to Karachi. If one of our number has never been before, the sight of the place leads to protests and confusion. "Is this it?!" or "Isn't this just someone's house?" are the most common. That means when they're digging into the awesome food we can be smug and self-righteous, which makes food taste better. Karachi does look like someone's house. A grubby looking mid-terrace on a sketchy looking street. Even when you walk in, it looks like you're in someone's living room. The whole place feels very "Fawlty Towers", especially with the crap decor, mismatched floral plates and somewhat shonky service. But then the food arrives and ermahgerd. Rick Stein has visited, complete with camera crew, on several occasions. It is easy to see why - or rather, easy to taste why. The curries are great, and you should try one of the specials if you can. Suddenly it doesn't feel like you're in a strange little restaurant built into a house. Quite often, our waiter has brought us out the wrong number of cutlery, forgotten something we order, or looked at us like aliens when we remind him that we ordered drinks 20 minutes ago. In some restaurants, this kind of service comes with crap food and makes me scowl. At Karachi, the combination of fantastic food with at least one mishap per visit makes me laugh. Maybe the place is run by Basil Fawlty. Maybe it's all just a cunning ruse. Either way, bloomin' good curries.

From the spicy starters to the sumptuous mains, it doesn't matter if you taste ventures more towards the creamy korma, the marvellous marsala or the sumptuously strong rogan josh, there's something for everyone here. The accompaniments are equally delicious and the drinks are served to perfection (the sour fizz is an effervescent delight). With plenty of room downstairs in the Bollywood and a wonderful atmosphere courtesy of the wall screens showing off the best of Indi-pop and bhangra tunes, Hasan's isn't the best Indian restaurant in the vicinity - it's one of the best in the city.

There's 2 levels to the restaurant with what looks like a function room downstairs for private parties. It's worth a visit if you're planning a trip to the Vue Cinema or Hollywood Bowl over the road. We then decided to pop over the road for a late lunch at Omar Khan's. It was about three and the place was empty, not surprisingly but also a bit awkwardly. It was a very cosy, quite posh interior and it felt a little as though we were pushing in. I hasten to add that none of that feeling came from the waiter who was attentive without hovering. He also earned points from me by putting us next to the radiator! We both opted for the early bird menu, a starter and a main for 8.50. I decided on aloo patties and a vegetable makhi, the boyfriend chose meat samosas and chicken rogan josh. This was a brave choice for me, i.e. not a korma, but it sounded mild. The starters were lovely, although sadly the boyfriend found a bit of plastic in his salad. It was an unfortunate moment, but the food itself was lovely and the waiter handled it well by giving us drinks on the house. This was a nice change from other responses I have seen from waiting staff when something has gone awry (my favourite being the waitress who when being advised of a silverfish ON the dining table simply squashed it into the tablecloth and then announced 'There are no silverfish in this establishment madam'!). With the mains, we both had an order of pilau rice and a garlic naan. It seemed a lot as it approached the table on a trolley, but it was just the right size. My curry was gorgeous, mild without being insipid with a nice quantity and selection of veg. The garlic naan was slightly crispy but not burned. I was very happy. I may even venture over again, though I may ensure next time that I take a book to carry me through the video game preview.

Yay finally a place that let me create my own curry! I can get my veg and chicken. Went here for…read morelunch with hubby and was happy with the options and food. Nice environment and could be a good date place.
