I had been a client at AJ Holt Inc. since the year John Holt opened the business approximately 50 years ago. I was living a block away at the time in my late teens and now am 71 years old. John ran a wonderful business and Betty was always welcoming. When John retired his son Bill took over the business. Betty retired and Jennifer took her place. The pandemic came and although I would not enter the building to isolate from human contact I still drove out from West Hill's many miles away now and exchanged my tax materials from under my windshield wiper. All went well until tax time 2025. I called after leaving off my paperwork and asked to speak to or leave a voice mail message for Bill to clarify one item so there would not be a mistake on my return. A new voice, Marissa, answered and would not let me speak to Bill or allow me to leave a voice message for him. When I eventually received notification that my return was ready to pick up I called and mentioned to Jennifer that I did not like the treatment received from Marissa. I also asked her to please e-mail me the signature page as she always did so I could place it and my payment under my windshield wiper at pick up the next day. Jennifer stated that she herself had prepared my taxes and the signature page would be e-mailed shortly so I could pick up the next day. In addition Jennifer stated that Marissa had been following her orders given by Jennifer when she denied me clarifying to Bill the one item for my tax prep, The next day arrived and no signature page. I called and Jennifer answered and lashed out at me over the phone that she did not like my attitude and it was better for me to find somewhere else to have my taxes done in 2026. I later called Bill to make him aware of the situation and his response before I could say anything was "I always stand behind my girls- I have a meeting coming in." He also stated he needed to complete the current tax year and then would think about whether he would continue preparing my taxes in the future. Just prior to this year's tax season a letter came to me appearing to be from Bill with his name and signature stating that he would continue doing my taxes but that now all would have to travel between my home and his office by courier as the girls felt uncomfortable having me in the office. (As I had not been in the office for several years but secluded in my car with the windows rolled up with all transfer of materials from under my windshield wiper since the pandemic began I was left with the situation that if any communication would be necessary in the future it would again open me up for further verbal mistreatment.) In addition the letter was mostly comprised of a very long run-on sentence with incomplete thoughts in it as though either written by someone having very poor writing skills or very fatigued when drafting it and it was definitely not proof read before sending it. Bill also noted in the letter that he did not know what happened to cause all this. Funny he never asked me nor when I called almost a year prior he was too busy to listen. I remembered that a teacher I had taught with during the last 5 years prior to my retirement had mentioned her husband was a CPA. I called her and asked if her husband did tax prep and she had me call him personally. He graciously has taken me in as a new client. He is 5 minutes from my home in a very nice multi- story modern office building in a large suite very nicely set up with a good- sized staff of young people all busy at their computer consoles working on projects. I read his YELP reviews prior to asking if he would accept me as a new client and ALL of his reviews are stellar and there are many. He told me that the only bad question is the one that you do not ask. My tax prep was done by one of his associates a few days ago and it was immediately electronically filed in front of me after loading all of my information into the computer program. Within less than an hour I was in and out in one visit with my taxes done, printed out for me and placed in a nice folder, and electronically filed--- all done in one visit in less than an hour and all in front of me. Granted I had to pay more than I did at Holt but it was worth every penny. I am grateful for the good years I had at AJ Holt Inc but something changed there this last year. Maybe they took on too much additional work which necessitated the new hire and which also caused the over stressed behavior exhibited. I can only speculate. Tiny Y from Culver City also has given a one star review for AJ Holt Inc.having received similar treatment. If anyone else receives this kind of unacceptable treatment in the future they will be aware that others have received this kind of unprofessional treatment in the past for just asking a question or asking to clarify information submitted to prepare their tax return to make sure the return is correct. read more

I was actually referred to Jennifer by another professional accounting service as they were too busy to accept another client. When I reached out to Jennifer at AJ Holt and explained to her my complicated tax situation, she quickly understood and found a way to remedy the problem. Not only that, she had my taxes filed within 24 hours at a very decent fee (some places quoted me twice what her fee was). And in that interim, I must have emailed her at least a dozen questions all of which she responded almost immediately and EVEN AFTER WORKING HOURS! After my father died, our attorney who helped us through the short-form of probate informed us that we needed to file a tax return for the trust, but that they didn't do that sort of service. I asked around for referrals from friends and was referred to Bill Holt. My brother and I met with him and discussed our situation. He looked into it and eventually concluded that a tax return did not need to be filed for the trust, due to the income of the trust not meeting the threshold limit. I asked to pay him for the work he did for us and he said no charge. I appreciated his expert analysis for our particular situation and was really surprised that he waived his fee for that. read more

I've been using A.J. Holt for several years. Two years ago Betty and John retired and their son and Jennifer took over. They have done an outstanding job as well and I intend to keep using them although I moved out of the state five years ago. Good customer service is priceless and they are always available to answer questions over the phone. I paid John for his time some years ago to answer some important questions that saved me from making a very costly mistake. That was money well worth spending. I would give them a negative rating if I could. No customer services skills, and never so much as a "how are you" from anyone who worked in the office ever. I used to go to this location, and had been there for several years. After doing my return, I wanted to ask them a few simple questions before I signed off on the forms (just as I have every year prior) and was met with what I felt was unecessary resistance. Instead of answering my questions on FEDERAL FORMS that I am liable for should there be any mistakes, they said they would have to charge me extra for answering my questions for 5 minutes. When I said that wasn't ok they told me to bring back my return because they weren't going to file it and had the nerve to tell me to if I didn't trust them not to make mistakes I should get my taxes done elsewhere. We are all human, we all make mistakes, and their mistake was paramount in how they treated long-term client. I think I'll spend my hard earned money elsewhere, even if it ends up costing me more. What I end up spending in money will at least save me a ration of grief. read more
