    Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

    Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

Birmingham Shuttlesworth is a smaller airport, which can be a good thing in some ways, but there…read moreare a few areas that could be better. On the plus side, it is not overly crowded and it is nice that they have a Chick fil A in the terminal. That gives you at least one solid option to grab something to eat. On the downside, there are not a lot of food or shopping options overall. The rental car area and signage could also be clearer. It was a little confusing figuring out exactly where to go and how to navigate that part of the airport. In my mind this is about a three and a half star experience. On here I will round it up to 4 stars because it is functional and not chaotic, but there is definitely room for improvement.

I'm giving Birmingham Airport a 2 instead of a 1 because its small size does make getting from one…read moreplace to another quick and convenient. That said, there are several areas where the airport falls short: * Limited Food Options: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, plan ahead. The food options are very limited, and finding something safe to eat can be difficult. I highly recommend packing your own snacks or meals. * Confusing Rental Car Signage: The rental car signage is not clear, especially for companies located off-site or away from the main counters. If you're using one of those services, expect a little confusion and allow extra time. * Inconsistent Security Experience: Security has been extremely hit or miss. On my previous trip, it took about two minutes - quick, efficient, and staffed by friendly agents. Today was the complete opposite. I especially want to highlight an issue that disproportionately affects travelers of color. I recommend that Brown travelers (even with TSA PreCheck) plan extra time for what many of us know as the "brown person tax." I witnessed an elderly Indian couple ahead of me have their bags pulled, and then mine was pulled as well. Typically, when TSA pulls a bag for screening, agents explain what they're checking, invite you to stand next to them, show you the item on the screen, and then ask clarifying questions. That has been my experience at nearly every other airport. At Birmingham, the agent did none of that, for them or for me. Instead, she spoke to us in a rude tone, did not follow the usual protocol, refused to answer or ask questions, and snapped at me when I tried to help identify what might have triggered the screening. When she was done, she shoved my items back into my bag, zipped it sloppily, and tossed it onto the counter without a word. When I told her to have a lovely day, she stomped away. The only place I've been treated more rudely was at the Melbourne Airport in Australia, where it was painfully obvious that every brown passenger was being singled out. * Overall Impression: Based on these experiences, I would honestly rather fly into Atlanta and drive the two hours the next time I need to be in Birmingham. The convenience of a small airport is overshadowed by the lack of amenities, unclear information, and inconsistent, sometimes disrespectful, treatment by security.

If you have ever had your car parked by Avia Luxor Valet and Limo, I suggest never doing it again…read more I worked for Dana for the last 7 weeks, at first 4 days a week then two. I would drive to downtown Birmingham each one of these days to get to work. It was a long drive, but I was told the pay would be decent so it wasn't terrible. After working for a little over a month, I requested my first pay check (I was told whenever we wanted, he would meet us with the check). No response that day, and later on says he can meet later the next week. For three weeks straight, he dodges my request for a check. This man owes me around $400. Yesterday, at work, he stops by to pay a different employee. I ask him for my check, and he tells me he will write me one. He then asks where my company shirt is (One that I was never given) and I tell him he never gave me one. He says he will go out to his car and grab me one. He gets in his car, and leaves without paying me. I text him asking why I wasn't paid, and was essentially told I will not be paid for 7 weeks of work because I wasn't wearing a company shirt (One I was never provided). At best, Dana is unethical in his business practices, but I also wonder what kind of state or federal laws he is not complying with. (Like perhaps hiring an employee with a suspended drivers license to valet cars, or not taking federal and state taxes out of the employees paychecks who actually got paid). I even attempted to go to his office address provided on his business card to collect my check and it is the address for a nail salon in Lee Branch. I have spoken with several former and present employees of Dana Patillo, and I am not the only employee with these experiences. If you look at his Yelp, it has posts from other former employees about him not paying them. He is paid to provide valet services for both Sky Castle, and Amore. Yet he cannot afford to pay his own employees. This man's integrity is worth nothing. I am not going to let him get away with scamming people. And for future employees he preys on, research before you work for him. For future businesses considering doing business with Mr. Patillo, I would also ask you to research if this is the type of person or business you want your establishment to be associated with.

I called this company to see if they had availability to rent a "stretch white limo" for my niece…read moreas a Sweet 16 surprise and I was excited to hear they did. It was confirmed on the phone and then I proceeded to fill out the online registration & payment, and put that we wanted to white stretched limo. This was going to be a fabulous surprise for my niece and her 7 friends. Well...I got a call around 2:05pm and the limo driver couldn't get his GPS to work, nor could he get it on his phone. So I had to give him step by step directions. When he got here (on time) He was in a black bus style vehicle. almost something like you would see for elderly pick up. (no offense, it's just no other way to describe it) I was devastated!! And Although the driver was very calm and kind, I was very upset. This is nothing a 16 year old would be surprised about or even think it was for her & her friends. When we got into the "bus" it was FILTHY!!! I have pictures to prove. And it smelt like bad body odor, from the armpits! The Limo driver offered to go back and get the white limo that was originally paid for, but the birthday party girls had an appointment to get to and there was no time to run back and get the correct car. I made about 8-10 attempts to call the owner at the business number listed. I sent an email as well. I haven't heard anything back and not sure if I will. The Limo driver did make a vehicle change ON THE WAY to the destination with the party girls in tow. All 8 in the party said the Stretch Limo was in worse condition and filthy dirty, the driver didn't know how to work the interior lights nor did he know how to work the music. So the Sweet 16 Birthday girl with her 7 friends sat in a dark limo with no music for their 3 hour limo experience. I would never recommend this company to anyone!! What a huge disappointment. And a BIG waste of my money!!
