Yanni's was hands-down the best fish and chips we had in the U.K. (or really anywhere for that…read morematter). The batter on the fish was so light, not at all greasy and most definitely delicious. The fish was firm and flaky... crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Served with either tarter or curry; both are super. The staff was lovely and the outside seating is perfect for people watching.

The special had cod, haddock, calamari, scampi with chips and mushy peas. Unfortunately, we made the wrong choice as the cod and haddock was a quarter of a fillet compared to what others were having. Due to the thickness of the batter, we didn't end up with much fish at all and there was only a small nub of fish underneath it all. The calamari and scampi were good, chips were okay. We doused out box with vinegar, but couldn't taste it since it was so watered down. Overall not what we were looking forward to. Next time (if there is one), I would just get a full fillet of fish and not the 'special'.

It was fast food and nothing fancy, but now I understand why they're known for this combo! I would categorize it as comfort food. The weather was a bit gloomy and rainy, and this was the perfect food for that sort of weather. I was fortunate to find a small table near the back of the place to enjoy the food. I wish that there were places like this back in the States, but all we have that's similar over in the US are Long John Silver's and they're not very good.

Not wanting pie and fried rice together, I ventured into Liverpool's China Town during my quest for takeout, but was always disappointed by both the cost and the taste. Then I found Kevin's near my gym. I've never actually been inside, but my ex used to bring home food every couple weeks as a treat. D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S! It's just the standard food you'd expect from an English Chinese establishment, but it's so incredibly tasty. Everything I've eaten has not been overly oily, either- always a plus when you've just eaten enough food to make up three meals. The prices are reasonable, but honestly, after you've stuffed your face with their noodles and crispy beef you will want to give them more money just as a "Thank you." I now live in an area not very close to Kevin's, so I was forced to try a few places around here when I had Chinese cravings. Not impressed. So even though I'll have to change buses once or twice to get there, I'm never getting Chinese take out anywhere but Kevin's when I'm in Liverpool.

The problem for me is I'm not sure if I really get it and I'm not sure whether I enjoy these two types of cuisine being mixed together in such close proximity. I believe it takes a top quality eatery to mix so many types of food and still manage to keep them all at the highest level of quality. Lau's for me does not manage to get the balance right. The front window of the shop advertises good food and good portions and the portions part is actually quite true I'm still just not sure about the standard of the food. For me the chips were far too greasy and the chinese dishes seemed to lack much of the flavour and spice you would get in a real top notch eatery. I haven't been brave enough to eat their kebabs yet but even by kebab standards they do not look particularly appetising. The prices are okay but nothing exceptional to draw in the student crowd and I feel they need to try some more student orientated offers to keep them coming in. The staff are nice enough and they try hard to serve you quickly and efficiently which is what you want in terms of fast food. The shop itself doesnt look great from the front not dirty exaclty but perhaps a little bit scruffy which is not really what you want from a food establishment. This place isnt exactly bad but the food has not really made a fan out of me either. My advice would be if you want a good chinese go to a chinese takeaway and for chippy go to a traditional chippy not somewhere which tries a fusion of the two and never really manages to pull it off.

China panda was always my favourite chippy, however since it was took over from Amy ( who still…read moreserves there) and her husband a couple of years ago to someone who obviously cannot cook proper Chinese food, it has gone right down. fried rice spicy, curry and gravy totally different and packaging really cheap. have now stopped going after 7 years. shame shame shame.
