Going to HI had never been on my "bucket list" but a friend invited me to join her so I went. I spent a week on the Big Island with her and then went on by myself for another week on Kauai.
Prior to leaving, another friend was giving me recommendations on things to do. The one thing he told me not to miss was a hike on the Kalepa Ridge Trail with Andrew from AHA Kauai. I Googled Images and decided that, as an avid photo hobbyist, this was something I couldn't miss. So I contacted Andrew and scheduled a hike.
While I got some gorgeous photos, the hike was so much more than that. Andrew is gifted with a unique vision of how life and the outdoors are intertwined. He naturally shares those thoughts with you as you travel. He has an ease with people that makes you feel like you've just met an old friend. And when I see an old friend, it's always good for my soul. This hike was good for my soul.
The obvious? I'm afraid of heights. I anticipated that I might get half way into the hike and want to go back. Subtly, he encouraged me to keep going. With some trepidation (and detours LOL!) I made it all the way out to the end of the path to an overlook where we sat and talked for a bit. On the way back, I began focusing on the sights, sounds, smells and breezes around me. Without realizing it, I was crossing parts of the path that I'd avoided on the way out. He pointed that out to me - we did a quick high-five and continued on our way. It wasn't until well after the hike that I began to realize the effect that a seemingly simple hike had had on me.
It wasn't just a fear of heights that I conquered that day with Andrew. I find myself realizing that even my greatest fears are truly rooted in "my head" and if I close my eyes and put myself back on that overlook of the Nepali Coast, I can see the greater picture and focus on making those fears melt away. I don't always succeed, but it's more than I knew how to do before.
I've been back home for a month now. During that time I've increasingly begun to feel that "magic" of Kauai that people talk about. I find myself wanting to go back so I can wrap myself in that magic and find that place again. I will go back - there's no doubt of that. But in the meantime, I try to follow Andrew's example and find positive energy in the beauty that's around me. read more
