The closest to home-cooked Nigerian food in Minneapolis! I've been looking for a Nigerian food spot since moving here. I've been asking many African folks that I would run into. Then, I was in an Uber with a Nigerian driver and he recommended African Deli. A few weeks later, I went and ordered spicy jollof rice and fish. After the first bite I knew I found what I was looking for! I came back the next day and order pounded yam and egusi soup. If you're ever in Brooklyn Park, stop by African Deli for authentic Nigerian food. The place is clean and has great customer service.

A ton of options. I recommend deciding what vegetable entrée that you want first. Then, you can add whichever meat to the veggie entrée. They don't really allow you to add veggies as a side, so it's best to pick the veggie first. A great thing about this place is they allow you to choose multiple meat options without any extra charge. So you can get goat, lamb, beef, chicken for the same price as ordering only one meat. Pepper soups are great.

It's a grocery store with a butcher shop and then the deli counter in the back of the market. There was a line of about 6 people and after we lined up, more people waiting. The person ordering ahead of me was telling me that he was getting the whole fried tilapia and plantains, which was his favorite. Not gonna lie, sure did look good! We ordered the red okra stew, collard greens, and goat soup. They offer regular and large sizes and your choice of fufu or rice. Also ordered the fried plantains and a meat pie. The guy behind the counter was friendly and helpful. He let us know which ones contained peanuts (my son has a peanut allergy) and which ones were considered spicy (goat stew) but since I love spicy foods, I didn't mind. My review of the food: -Red Okra with fish and fufu: delicious, greasy, and flavorful. Be careful because the fish was a big chunk and still had bones. -Collard greens with meat and fufu: I think meat was chicken. Our favorite dish of all of them. Flavorful, greasy, and delicious. -Goat Stew and rice: so full of meat (with bones). The Goat chunks remind me of pork belly (fatty, chewy, flavorful). This stew was spicy. Strong goat flavor. Had habanero peppers. -plantains: they gave us so much! Starchy and sweet. Yummy -meat pie: was just ok. Felt a little dry. Overall good experience. Food was so flavorful and full of spices. A little more greasier than how I normally like to eat but the grease also helped with eating the fufu. Total bill was about $60. Was enough food to feed about 5-6 people. No seating area. Everything is packaged for to-go orders.

It's a small carryout only spot. The woman working there was very nice and accommodating. I informed her that I'm vegan and inquired about a few of my favorite Nigerian foods: egusi, greens, jollof, and beans. She didn't have egusi. She stated that she had greens but they're made with fish. She then offered to make me a fresh batch sans the fish if I had time to wait. I most certainly do! It wasn't a long wait either. I got a hefty container of food for about $15. There was enough food for 2 days (if I wasn't being greedy). I tried my food right away. The greens were very good and clearly freshly made with quality produce. The beans were good. The jollof rice was SLAMMIN!! Perfection in the flavor department! I'm unsure how long they've been open, but they seem fairly new. They're located in a strip mall with other small, locally owned businesses. Again, it's carryout only; you cannot sit in and eat. (I ate in my car.) They also offer catering services. Be sure to check out this spot if you're in the MSP area.

Mid 2021- I was in this strip mall getting my hair done when a hairstylist from Liberia walked in with this delicious smelling food. I asked her where she got it from, and explained to her that I have been unable to find a Liberian restaurant that taste like "home" here in the Twin Cities, and she vouched that this place was pretty good. It's been a wrap ever since. I order the same thing every single time, which is a bit costly. I think my entire order usually comes between $50 - $65, depending on if I get a small or large. I order the Whole Fish with Jolof Rice, & Collard Greens with No Meat (which you can order by size, S M L XL) The Whole Fish is nicely coated with this delicious seasoning and cooked to perfection! The Jolof Rice is delicious. The Collard Greens are so good, I've never tasted greens like it! Very original taste and I love that it's served with white rice. There is a young man who is always working, and he is very pleasant and easy to talk to. They don't have a lot of beverage options, but they do have a small grocer isle for you to purchase miscellaneous things like rice, beans, bouyon's, beverages, etc. There is a large parking lot, so parking should never be an issue. This is located in a strip mall so you are surrounded by many other merchants. If you are quickly picking up, there is space for you to pull up briefly close to their entrance. I plan to keep supporting this place. I think the food is amazing, the staff is kind, and I always have a pleasant experience.

Any seasoned foodie will tell you that the ones tucked away, perhaps a bit more rough around the proverbial edges and missing bells and whistles are where you will find the most authentic (and delicious) cuisine. City Afrique was an INCREDIBLE experience in West African fare. I'm accustomed to food from this region, when cooked here, is often overly spiced, too salty or too hot. I ordered the okra sauce with fufu and it was the best I've ever eaten. And I've eaten a lot of okra sauce. The cook allowed you to add hot pepper as desired and the salt level was subtle and supportive of the sweet fufu and savory okra. I couldn't stop eating it- it was simply a perfect balance traditional flavors. Prices are very reasonable for home cooked West African dishes, which require extensive simmering and taste testing. Without rice, regular size dishes (they have large too) range around $11-16. With rice or fufu, prices range between $19-25. The ambiance and decor proudly displayed select traditional Liberian art and cultural pieces, along with other wall hangings reflective of bigger stores. The host greeted me warmly and shared it was his uncle's restaurant. When I shared my delight with the flavors, he brought out the cook. She was genuinely thrilled that her cooking was appreciated- the sign of a true culinary artist. They also have a small party room they rent out for $500 a night.
