We drove to the Heritage House thinking we would be able to see the exhibit at 10am. Shame on us for not checking the website! The tickets were sold out until noon. We then bought tickets on line for later in the day. The Heritage House is a beautiful building but not very large. Despite its size they hosted an outstanding exhibit! We learned so much and were really moved by the stories you heard on the free audio guide. We also learned how Africatown was founded. All very interesting. I'm so glad we got to see this. No photography is allowed in the exhibition. They have many outstanding pieces on display as well as very well curated story boards that explain the history of the Clotilda. There is a small gift shop when you enter with a nice array of books, tshirts and jewelry.

(If you aren't from here, you can look him up on Wikipedia or check out the Mobile Mask website.) This isn't the fanciest parade with the most elaborate floats. Although there are a few elaborate ones, the majority are just people riding on decked out trailers. It's probably the parade where you'll catch the most throws. This parade is often referred to as "the people's parade". This parade always rolls the Sunday prior to Fat Tuesday. Before the parade begins, the Merry Widows visit the gravesite of Joe Cain in the Church Street Cemetery, then his home place in the Oakleigh district. Of course, Chief Slacabamorinico makes a grand appearance at the parade. The coveted black beads are thrown by the Merry Widows, who area dressed in long black dresses and black veils. The Merry Mistresses, on the other hand, are dressed in shorter red dresses with red veils, and toss red roses to the crowd. This is probably one of the most fun parades to attend. It's the first parade my kids and I ever attended together, and it will forever remain one of our happiest memories. They caught SO much stuff and had such a great time reveling. It's really a can't miss parade for Mobile's carnival season!

Just a fantastic film festival. It's an annual event in its third year and happens in November,…read morestarting on a Thursday and ending on a Sunday. If you are a fan of movies and/or filmfests you will love it. This was my first year attending so I cannot speak for the other two years, but this year's line-up consisted of great shorts, narratives, documentaries, and full length. None were commercial and so you really got exposed to movies you wouldn't otherwise see. That is my major beef with other Film Fests, that they often show movies that will or are already in movie theaters (NOLA film Fest in recent years) and don't focus on regional/local films or talent. Many of the films I saw over the weekend were locally produced, shot, and/or had local subject matters. That is what I am looking for in a filmfest: that it has an overall theme and that it focuses on the area or region where it is located. Keep in mind that Fairhope isn't that large of a city and consequently the firlmfest isn't large. But it was a professional operation with volunteers, professional brochure and schedules, and they even had themed swag you could buy ( I got a coffee mug). They also handed out a free coupon book that could be used at local businesses, which I thought was a great local touch. There were a few places to catch the films but all were located in the heart of downtown Fairhope to getting around was very convenient. I picked up on tickets at the downtown city offices and they were very helpful with the lay of the land. Parking was also not an issue, as there is non-metered street parking all over the downtown area. I parked my car around 9:30 am and didn't leave until around 5:00. I walked everywhere that day. There are great places to get lunch and some fantastic shopping and so in between films I got something to eat and did some light shopping. All-in-all it was a fantastic day. If you love smaller filmfests showcasing great independent movies then you will enjoy the Fairhope filmfest. The fact that it occurs in a charming town is just the icing on the cake! Check it out...you will be glad you did!

It is amazing how much they crammed into this building and how many animals this guy hunted. Lots of different species, including many dangerous species. Crazy. We were offered wine and beer during our visit and thoroughly enjoyed our gallery tour. There's a ton of art upstairs, and Trey reminded us not to miss the former speakeasy downstairs, as their was a lot more art to be seen. I cannot wait to visit again during Art Walk. And we were also told that the gallery hosts events and can be rented out as well. Overall, the gallery is fabulous and well laid out! I mean, what is St. Patrick's Day without Silky on his thrown or sharing a diver with drunk goats? I might have been a little homesick for the day, plus Silky died a few years back. So I knew it was time to start a new tradition here in my new hometown. I was afraid LuckyFest was going to be elbow to elbow crowed and so loud you couldn't hear yourself talk. Inside, it was. Out in the tent was a much different story and that turned out to be the place to be. I'm so glad I went! We had a blast! Well, I vaguely recall having blast and judging by the pictures, I'm pretty sure I did. Early on, another Yelper couple introduced me to a nice white-bearded Irish gent all decked out in a green suit. He gave me a button and showed me snapshots of his dogs. That perked me right up! Later in the night, another man decked out in a green suit came by with his little doll and mingled. Then there were the two men that Rachel and I suspected might be secret service agents, but they couldn't really tell us what they were doing there in business suits and ties. Mix all that up with a photo booth, some beer and great appetizers, and you've got quite the party. Oh, they also had great bands playing and they played a variety of songs anyone could sing and dance too. Whether you've lived here forever or you're a transplant like me, I would definitely recommend hitting up LuckyFest on St. Patrick's Day! It's my new St Pat's tradition!
