Good service, good food, good value. Better than the place next door that everyone seems to rave about

Beatbox Kitchen - Good burger! At Preston Food Truck Park

So far, the only burger that can make a contest out of Beatbox is Fergburger from Fergburger, Queenstown. Anyway, coming back to Beatbox, Thursday night has got to be up there in terms of the highlight of my week. There's literally a spring in my step after work, knowing that Beatbox's gonna be outside my apartment from 6pm. Can you think of anything that can top a beer from Mr Wilkinson and a juicy Ralph? I certainly can't. The only downside I can think of is the inexistence of seating due to Beatbox being a meals on wheels deal although Mr Wilkinson allows you to sit inside provided you buy a drink of course so overall a good deal.

The Beatbox Kitchen is meals on wheels taken to the heights of gourmet burgerdom. It's a roving…read moreburger van that parks itself in a small car park by a green patch on Park St at the top of Rathdowne in Carlton North every Friday from 6pm till the burgers run out. If you don't see the van first upon pulling up at the location, which you'd have to be a bit blind to miss seeing that it's a van-sized beatbox stereo, you'll see half the neighbourhood lazing around on the grass with bottles of beer and wine waiting for their burger order. The other half of the neighbourhood make up the very long queue leading up to the Beatbox van. What is everyone queueing up for, they're just burgers? Well, they're not JUST burgers. The grass-fed beef burger is the best $11 you'll ever spend on a meat burger, and likewise with the 'shroom burger for $10. There aren't any fancy fillings, just the usual cheese, tomato, cos lettuce, onion and stereo sauce - simple and perfectly balanced to showcase the fine quality and excellent flavour of the beef/portobello mushroom. The fries at $5 a serve with a range of sauces (mayo, tomato or spicy tomato relish or stereo sauce) are crispy and fresh. The only downside is the long, long, long queue and up to an hour wait for your burger, but come expecting the long wait - bring friends and drinks - and it's actually a really pleasant wait. I still give it 5 stars based solely on the quality and flavour of the burgers. Stay up-to-date with the Beatbox's whereabouts by following them on Twitter. They also tweet as soon as the burgers run out (usually by 8.30pm), so you'll know when to give up on the dream and find something else to eat until the following Friday.

Sometimes all you need is a pizza, a bottle of wine and a good movie on the couch to round out a…read morebusy week. That's totally what I needed last Friday so we headed to I Carusi for a couple of pizzas and then headed home to fall in to sloth mode. Once upon a time this place was owned by the same people who own I Carusi II in St Kilda, but I was told that's no longer the case. The menu looks the same, with some of the old favourite toppings still there (I'm looking at you broccoli, lemon, chilli and parmesan) and a few specials available. If you're dining in, bring a bottle of vino because they welcome BYO. The pizzas themselves are good, but certainly not the best I've ever had. The base is a little on the thicker side, which means you probably can't eat as many slices as you'd like. Let's face it, I'm a guts and I love eating an entire thin-based pizza myself. With the pizzas from I Carusi, I needed to tap our after a few slices which was a shame because the toppings were tasty and I loved the overall flavour. I'll be back the next time I need a vege-out night on the couch.

If I was to judge solely on its Pizza this would be as good as it gets! Its first shop opened on Holmes Street Brunswick and if you blink you miss it, which I have done many times. Its exterior is not the most aesthetically pleasing but it's those who are regulars and are lovers of old school Italian 'cool' knows that rarely matters. It's all about who and what's behind the kitchen that is the real deal! Their second store appropriately named I Carusi II offers a similar lay out, same menu and similar atmosphere. Both the St Kilda Store and the Brunswick store work off a cash only basis and they prefer that you book in advance to avoid disappointment. If you get a chance to look at the menu online I recommend it as there is so much to choose from you will feel you have to give credit to everything! This is why dining in a larger group heightens the I I Carusi experience as share plates are a great way to get started followed by a mix-match array of many pizza choices. I would highly recommend the Salmone - Tomato Base, Marscapone, Smoked Salmone and Fish Roe with Dill. The Americano, Quattro Formaggi and the Speciale -Tomato, mozzarella, soppressa, roasted peppers, artichokes & olives. Who am I kidding I've tried them all... even the Margherita is amazing. Pizza is priced at around $15-20 and servings are generouse. Dessert Pizza is also a favorite with Nutella calzone and white chocolate and peach! Yum.

Half Moon is up there with my favourite businesses in Coburg. I first ventured here to try the…read morefelafel and have been a regular ever since. The felafel are made fresh to order and you can have three of these plump, hot, gently spiced babies stuffed in a pita bread with a combination of vegetarian items. There's six options to choose from, but why you'd get anything other than the "Half Moon" with chilli sauce I don't know. Think crispy felafels, salad, olives, pickles, hummus... wrapped in a warm pita and weighing almost the size of a small child. This whole thing will set you back a mere $8. Other than the fact that the food here is delicious and cheap, the owners and staff are really what make this a worthy experience worth crossing town for. Run by a family for the last 12 years, they're super lovely and really care about their customers. The "father" is so kind and will make a point of walking around the tables outside to check that his customers are happy, that they have enough napkins and that they're looked after. I love chatting to him and if I time my lunch break right I might be able to sit with him while he has his lunch break in the late afternoon. Customer service doesn't cost anything, yet there's not many places that get it right or enjoy it as this family does. 5 stars.

We arrived one busy lunchtime, and joined the line of people ordering kebabs. I went for the eponymous Half Moon sandwich, which was with falafels and salad. The woman taking our order at the counter asked us to take a table outside and the other would be brought out to us. I thought she was clever to be able to remember which order went where without any table numbers or tickets. It turned out she didn't have a clue, and our order was bounced around between 4 different tables before it was given to me. At one point, she even gave the order to me, then took it away, and then returned to hand it to me again! The sandwich itself was good value at $8, but no where near as large as others have suggested. I finished it without a problem, and I wouldn't consider myself to have a bigger appetite than most guys. The salad and sauce was nice, but the falafels were ordinary. I'd have preferred them to be crunchier on the outside and soft inside. The other disappointment was that they used packet pita bread rather than baking their own, as any proper restaurant in the middle east would do. Even so, if I were in Coburg again, I would return to Half Moon Cafe for lunch.
