I Carusi Pizza

Sometimes all you need is a pizza, a bottle of wine and a good movie on the couch to round out a…read morebusy week. That's totally what I needed last Friday so we headed to I Carusi for a couple of pizzas and then headed home to fall in to sloth mode. Once upon a time this place was owned by the same people who own I Carusi II in St Kilda, but I was told that's no longer the case. The menu looks the same, with some of the old favourite toppings still there (I'm looking at you broccoli, lemon, chilli and parmesan) and a few specials available. If you're dining in, bring a bottle of vino because they welcome BYO. The pizzas themselves are good, but certainly not the best I've ever had. The base is a little on the thicker side, which means you probably can't eat as many slices as you'd like. Let's face it, I'm a guts and I love eating an entire thin-based pizza myself. With the pizzas from I Carusi, I needed to tap our after a few slices which was a shame because the toppings were tasty and I loved the overall flavour. I'll be back the next time I need a vege-out night on the couch.

Whenever someone asks where can we go for good pizza or I am to entertain a weekend visitor I…read morealways recommended I Carusi, it simply rolls off the tongue. If I was to judge solely on its Pizza this would be as good as it gets! Its first shop opened on Holmes Street Brunswick and if you blink you miss it, which I have done many times. Its exterior is not the most aesthetically pleasing but it's those who are regulars and are lovers of old school Italian 'cool' knows that rarely matters. It's all about who and what's behind the kitchen that is the real deal! Their second store appropriately named I Carusi II offers a similar lay out, same menu and similar atmosphere. Both the St Kilda Store and the Brunswick store work off a cash only basis and they prefer that you book in advance to avoid disappointment. If you get a chance to look at the menu online I recommend it as there is so much to choose from you will feel you have to give credit to everything! This is why dining in a larger group heightens the I I Carusi experience as share plates are a great way to get started followed by a mix-match array of many pizza choices. I would highly recommend the Salmone - Tomato Base, Marscapone, Smoked Salmone and Fish Roe with Dill. The Americano, Quattro Formaggi and the Speciale -Tomato, mozzarella, soppressa, roasted peppers, artichokes & olives. Who am I kidding I've tried them all... even the Margherita is amazing. Pizza is priced at around $15-20 and servings are generouse. Dessert Pizza is also a favorite with Nutella calzone and white chocolate and peach! Yum.

Half Moon is up there with my favourite businesses in Coburg. I first ventured here to try the…read morefelafel and have been a regular ever since. The felafel are made fresh to order and you can have three of these plump, hot, gently spiced babies stuffed in a pita bread with a combination of vegetarian items. There's six options to choose from, but why you'd get anything other than the "Half Moon" with chilli sauce I don't know. Think crispy felafels, salad, olives, pickles, hummus... wrapped in a warm pita and weighing almost the size of a small child. This whole thing will set you back a mere $8. Other than the fact that the food here is delicious and cheap, the owners and staff are really what make this a worthy experience worth crossing town for. Run by a family for the last 12 years, they're super lovely and really care about their customers. The "father" is so kind and will make a point of walking around the tables outside to check that his customers are happy, that they have enough napkins and that they're looked after. I love chatting to him and if I time my lunch break right I might be able to sit with him while he has his lunch break in the late afternoon. Customer service doesn't cost anything, yet there's not many places that get it right or enjoy it as this family does. 5 stars.

We arrived one busy lunchtime, and joined the line of people ordering kebabs. I went for the eponymous Half Moon sandwich, which was with falafels and salad. The woman taking our order at the counter asked us to take a table outside and the other would be brought out to us. I thought she was clever to be able to remember which order went where without any table numbers or tickets. It turned out she didn't have a clue, and our order was bounced around between 4 different tables before it was given to me. At one point, she even gave the order to me, then took it away, and then returned to hand it to me again! The sandwich itself was good value at $8, but no where near as large as others have suggested. I finished it without a problem, and I wouldn't consider myself to have a bigger appetite than most guys. The salad and sauce was nice, but the falafels were ordinary. I'd have preferred them to be crunchier on the outside and soft inside. The other disappointment was that they used packet pita bread rather than baking their own, as any proper restaurant in the middle east would do. Even so, if I were in Coburg again, I would return to Half Moon Cafe for lunch.

I'm not entirely sure whether it was a proper pub or bar, or simply just a burger joint, but the atmosphere certainly suggested that it is a bar. The service was pretty good, and the burgers, yeah, the burgers were great. Oh, and considering its location, the selection of beers was not surprising, and quite good at that as well. A definite place to check out.

On my most recent visit, The B.East were hosting a very awesome New Orleans themed party, which is wah-aaaaaay up my alley. (FYI they are doing this on the first Sunday of every month). They were serving up Hurricanes and Mimosas and I was in HEAVEN (while knee-deep in a Hurricane). Their burgers are pretty sweet too but I would recommend the sliders more. They just seem to... taste better. Like finding a good parking spot, if you happen to score a seat out the front, you should never leave because it will never happen again. Sit there and bask in the glory that is the Brunswick East hipster. P.S. It is called The B-East because it's in Brunswick East.
