Thereafter, I dealt over the phone with a number of knowledgeable people who were all familiar with my case, had my information there in front of them, and were able to provide answers and assistance immediately. I never had to leave messages for a main contact and wait for them to call me. They were extremely flexible. During this time, family members put in requests for various things and each time I had to call Basic Funerals to see what could be done. I never heard from them that "Gee, that's not what you said you wanted before"; I only heard "Let's see how we can get that for you". Each time they patiently and professionally worked with me to do what was needed. The funeral service went tickety-boo, there were no hiccups at all, and everybody did their job smoothly and inconspicuously. It was all very impressive and professional. I really came to rely on them because I knew they could handle any request or question. All of them. The whole team. Afterwards they provided all the paperwork I needed to register the death, notify those who needed to know, and submit applications to various government agencies. I also really liked the website where I could put up the obituary. Writing that obituary really helped me in the grieving process. Choosing pictures and music and writing about the deceased is all very therapeutic! I would definitely use them again and I would probably pre-arrange next time.

My wife was hesitant with my decision but after receiving the package, she in turn also contacted Robin and set up her arrangements. They didn't mind working for you and that's a big thing when your loved one passes on. When we arrived, there was always someone there to greet you with a smile. But not a overly happy smile, a compassionate one. The staff was wonderful. The person who was directing on the day of the funeral is just so perfect for his job. He spoke clear, was informative, and on time. Unfortunately I can't remember his name. But he was a young man who wore glasses to drive. Every demand was met and more. The place was very clean and tissue boxes were placed everywhere. We had the service done in the chapel and was just peaceful and perfect. The lounge needs a fridge for cream but other than that things were good. The price was average like any other places around. It's the service you can't buy. I highly recommend this funeral home to people as I am an incredibly stuck up person when it comes to customer service as I have worked in it my entire life. There's only a few places around now that I can honestly say my family and I were completely satisfied with the service provided. It's funny how a funeral home was one of them but it's an important one!

It's generally not my policy to review anything related to a funeral home (it just feels a bit…read moreweird and a little insensitive to write about a place tied to the concept of death and unpleasant memories of the past), but I'm making an exception for a funeral home in Port Credit that held a very classy and respectful viewing last week. One of my co-workers (who was also a good friend and mentor) passed away suddenly last Tuesday, as of this writing, and the family was able to quickly put together a viewing at Skinner & Middlebrook. This has been a mainstay in Port Credit for a long time, but I didn't realize just how important it was until I'd once again lost someone close to me. The last time I was here, it was for my grandmother's viewing and funeral service in 2003, and the owner Scott and the staff did a marvelous job bringing everything together and ensuring that the service was respectful, understated and classy. Fast-forward nearly 15 years and I was back here again, reminiscing about my friend with other journalists, co-workers and his family members. The staff made sure that everything was handled impeccably, from small snacks and tissues on-hand to images and videos of my co-worker from his past career and family life playing on a video screen and nearby television. This is truly a family business (and a multi-generational one, from what I understand), and the interesting part is that the staff make you feel like you're a part of their family, no matter how tangential your relationship may be to the deceased. The viewing was respectful and well-presented, and the staff were on-hand the next day to help deliver the casket to a church down the road -- in the midst of a heavy snowstorm, no less. They definitely went above and beyond for the family, and I commend them for their attention to detail, patience and tact when dealing with the situation and outlying circumstances. It's that level of consistency I appreciate, and it's a very suitable and apt place for any matters related to funeral viewings or service.

The funeral home was one I had dealt with previously when my father died and I was generally quite pleased with their services. What I was not too happy with was the prices of the caskets they had in their showroom. It is my understanding that the laws were changed about 20 years ago to allow the purchase of caskets from outside suppliers and to require funeral homes to accept properly made caskets and not charge extra to do this. I told the funeral director that I was considering purchasing elsewhere and would get back to them within a day or two. I came to this business the following day on a Sunday afternoon and they had about a dozen caskets on display in various price ranges but AT LEAST half the cost of similar models at the funeral home. Most of the models were made in Quebec and a few were from Mexico, all being quite nice. Being a Sunday and the following day being a holiday, I was somewhat concerned about delivery since the viewing was on Tuesday. I was surprised when told they would deliver right away. I purchased a casket and met the delivery at the funeral home 1-1/2 hour later. Other internet rating have given this business low marks for issues getting headstones made. I cannot comment on that, but will highly recommend them for no pressure sales, beautiful caskets, great service and amazing prices.
