La Spiaggia is just a few steps from the train station and is run by a father and daughter duo, both of which are very nice and hospitable. I get the feeling Andrea has a great sense of humor once you get to know him. He's expecting a birthday card from me next year. No, really... Our first night was spent in room 305 with a partial ocean view. Our last three nights were in room 306 which I highly recommend. It's a bit bigger and has a balcony over the street and a great ocean view. The included breakfast was a nice selection of eggs, yogurt, cereals, meats, cheeses, fruits, juice and coffee. The croissants were pure evil! Both Maria and Andrea have great tips about what sights to take in and restaurants to patron. The best part is the area is so small you actually have time to do it all if you're ambitious. Truly a relaxing stay here at La Spiaggia. Grazie!

The hotel is located farther into Monterosso and up a bit of a climb - they can reserve a taxi for you which picks you up from the train station if you do not wish to lug your luggage up the entire way. There are only 2-3 taxis in Monterosso (costs 15 euros each way). Wait to buy your Cinque Terre pass and Via Dell'Amore ticket - they can help you purchase what you need here for up to half off! We also did the pasta, pesto, and tiramisu class here which was a lot of fun! Would definitely recommend it. It is 120 euros per person and has to be paid in cash - there are several ATMs nearby. We were here for the first day of the Lemon Festival (mid-May) so all the shops had lemon themed displays up!

The rooms are very comfortable and have all the amenities you need including a terrace with a sea-view. The owners, Matteo and Carla, as well as the entire staff, are the best I have ever experienced. They are all kind and welcoming. They anticipated our needs by giving us information about the trains and hiking among villages in Cinque Terra. My brother in law wasn't feeling well and stayed at the hotel the first day. Carla called a doctor and also checked on him throughout the day. We all took a cooking class with Carla and it was fabulous. We made tiramisu, pasta, pesto and branzino. She was so patient with our lack of skills and made it fun. We all felt we might be able to do these recipes at home. We ate the delicious meal on an upper terrace with an even more amazing view. We were in Italy for two weeks and this was my favorite hotel. THE BEST!

Restaurants, groceries, and coffee shops were all a short walk away. First, one of the sisters picked us up at the train station so we didn't have to lug our luggage downhill and into town. After a long day of travel it was much appreciated. Second, when we arrived, the other sister, Chiara - who seems to run the place - greeted us and got us checked in, and then proceeded to provide so much wonderful information for us as visitors. She helped us figure out some hikes, and what to do on the first day which would be rainy and stormy, and she recommended a ton of great restaurants. In short, she was so friendly and welcoming that we immediately felt at home. Our room was basically furnished but clean and comfortable and spacious. One of the nicer bathrooms of our trip. The room opened onto a beautiful garden courtyard where we enjoyed relaxing outside for the afternoon. If you're visiting the Cinque Terres, which are one short train stop south of Levanto, I highly recommend staying at the spacious and relaxing A Durmi instead of in the crowded and over-touristed Cinque Terres towns.

We ended up staying at this lovely hotel in cute Levanto, one short train stop from Monterosso. The hotel is close to the train depot, but they also offer parking for $18 per night in a nearby garage (most hotels we looked at charge more, fwiw). It's right in the middle of the town's "centro," near great restaurants, several yummy "foccacerie," a cute park where kids play in the evening and people stroll about, and a block and a half from the beach. The rooms are spacious, high-ceilinged, air-conditioned, well-maintained and -furnished. The included breakfast was good and filling, the wifi strong and fast, if that's your thing. They rent bikes for next to nothing, and you can easily bike to beautiful Bonnasola, a nearby beach town with sparkling water and even fewer people (since trains don't run there), or Monterosso. In the past we'd stayed at four-star hotels that really should have been designated three-star; in this case, it was the opposite. We had a near-perfect stay at the Hotel Nazionale and will surely return.

If you want beach towels, you can pick them up at the front desk on your way out. They are a "green" facility, so you can get train tickets at a much cheaper price. They can also book your hikes. There is so much to do here. We stayed 3 nights 4 days and I wish we had 3 more nights. We did get to visit all 5 areas and hike 4 of them. Don't eat at Pastaria. There's a reason they always have plenty of seats. You will want to eat at Ciak and Emy's way. Our favorite grocery store was Crai. Walk straight back and they have vino on tap. 6€ for a liter! You can also take scuba tours, bike tours, kayak tours. Oh, you can pay extra for breakfast included. It's a generous breakfast. And the husband makes a "cake of the day" that is always award winning.

One person in our group couldn't sleep due to the stink. I have to say the smell was quite bad. There is a spa on the property but, it is only open from 5:30pm until 7:30pm. We arrived at 6:30 and didn't have time to use this facility. We ate at the restaurant that was located on the property. The food was below average. The staff was nice but very slow. Our party of eight ordered desert. Three deserts arrived to the table after being ordered. Four desserts arrived 15 minutes later. The last desert arrived 30 minutes after being ordered. Who serves like this? It would have been nice to receive them all at once. There was only one waiter, one waiter assistant/busboy and the cook. The restaurant only had our party of eight and two other couples in the restaurant. To sum it up this place has poor service, unused spa, horrible odor and great views. I would never stay there again.
