There are several good CFIs here, but the school has zero discernible processes. What's worse -…read morethey use that to move to goal posts, especially if you are moving faster than they expect and you are going to finish quicker - which means less revenue for them. I have talked with 3 other students that all had the same exact experience I did - they keep telling you "one more flight and you'll be good to go and we'll schedule you with the DPE", but guess what. - that flight never actually comes. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the heartache and wasted money, pick a different school. There are several others at GTU that are more interested in helping you reach your goal than they are unjustly padding their pocketbooks. Case in point - they just recently raised the rental fee on their Dakota from $130/hr to $170/hr. Now, inflation and all that, sure. But they sent out the email notification to all students days AFTER the change went into effect.

I was looking for a curriculum similar to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to gain post college…read moreexperience and found it in IFR Flight Training School. The other places I checked out wanted to teach Instruments with the engines running (in the air, as in $$$). Having been brought up through a rigorous training program, where Instrument training begins on the ground and in the simulators, in order to fully grasp concepts before put into practice, I was unable to find a flight school that met these standards or shared ERAU's philosophy, until I contacted Mark, the owner. Before meeting him, through our phone conversations, I already had a tremendous amount of respect for him, impressed by, not only his military background and experience, but by his desire to train pilots the correct way. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to earn a license or rating, please stay out of the sky, as it isn't only dangerous for you but for other pilots and their passengers, sharing airspace with you. If you are looking for a place that will give you skills needed to not just pass a check ride but keep you safer, sharper and more respectable in the eyes of other aviators, look no further. Once I am done with my training, I hope to be able to instruct here and carry forward the good habits IFR strives to instill in its pilots to make the skies safer. I can already see the reputation of the flight school has gained the respect and notice of flight departments that hire pilots who have trained here. The place is always clean and inviting and all the equipment and resources are well maintained. You can't beat the location on the airfield (it is the closest to I-35). It is like my home away from home and I have been made to feel like family. Oh, and as a bonus, the examiner who does check rides around the area has an office here, so you get a chance to cross paths and feel comfortable knowing you've met him already, rather than walking into an already stressful situation, not knowing what to expect.

Any time I needed clarification, I received a prompt and helpful response. As for the flight training, I am only a couple of lessons in, but my instructor Landyn has been excellent and very flexible with scheduling. I am really looking forward to completing my training here.

Very bad experience to get an aircraft check out at this place. I just sold my 2022 Cessna 182 and…read morewanted to rent airplane to stay current. I got instructor Tylor who failed to do proper procedures/aircraft briefing and I had to file complaint with the office. The office used it against me despite having all the facts/witness presented to them regarding what happened. I have brought all the problems I encountered with instructor to the office attention , but the office would not look in to the instructor and decided to blame me customer/pilot . . (With over 700 hours total flight time). If you will have a problem with this school don't dare to speak up because you be the blame and it will be used against you :( I did have aircraft check outs done previously and instructors did proper job to make you familiar and comfortable with aircraft , but not at this school. I also asked twice to give me a call to discuss the situation and they would avoid communication and wont give me a chance with another instructor/aircraft either. Also Aircraft Cessna N904CP this school used to do the check out some of the equipment did not work at all, pilot door wont open to get out from the aircraft(HAZARD), Radio on Com2 is a problem and you cannot hear controllers or be able to communicate at all. Aircraft itself was in bad condition and I brought this to the instructor attention, he disregard it and said I failed communication. This review for people to be AWARE of this place.

I completed my recurrent training at Aircraft Simulator Training (AST) and wanted to give my two…read morecents about it, especially since I also recently I did my initial somewhere else. I apologize for the long post, but now that I can compare facilities, I believe this is a critical subject which deserves attention. In a nutshell, if you are on the fence trying to decide where to do your initial/recurrent, STOP!, do yourself a favor and try the people who will really teach (among many other things) how to survive an engine failure after rotation (for you AND your aircraft). Having recently done my 421 initial somewhere else, I was intrigued about AST's emergency training, so I decided to make a trip to Burnet, TX and give them a try. Oh boy! was I in for a life experience. Everything I learned from Rick McGuire and Chick Crisefi has one, and one purpose only, to give me the knowledge and techniques to keep me and my passengers safe. This is a no BS course, taught by people who not only fly, but own these airplanes (they are parked right there, by the simulator building in the hangar), this is real "advanced" training. So, let's get to specifics on why I believe this training to so good: 1. They have mastered a technique for aircraft stabilization on the most critical phase of flight. After practicing with Chris over and over the "how", and understanding the "why", I realized what I had been taught before would not necessarily be applicable in real life. Time is of essence, and what one does right then and there, will be crucial between destroying the aircraft after running an airport fence down a ravine or flying back to land. 2. The aircraft systems and engine ground training are completely designed to understand what the AC is SAYING to you when something goes wrong (Rick is an aircraft whisperer...). Everything I learned on the mechanic side, was to understand what would happen and understand the consequences of a system failure, and specially what to do about it. More than teaching you systems and how they work, Rick teaches you how to THINK when something goes wrong, and thus, reach the right conclusion. 3. The Simulators are new and precise, they are motion simulators, the graphics are fast and very accurate. 4. Last but not least, now I can really appreciate how important is to receive training from pilots who have flown and are current on the aircraft one is training for. Before you do any simulator training, ASK your instructor when was the last time he or she flew your AC make and model, you be surprised as there are instructors teaching simulator training, who have not flown the real AC in decades (or never), simply put this is dangerous. Just to clarify, Chris not only taught me what to do when something goes wrong right after takeoff, but on every phase of flight, VMC and IMC, with and without bad weather (these motion simulators really move when in turbulence!). Being new to the 421C, my personal choice is to fly accompanied by a relative pilot who has hundreds of hours on this AC, this for the foreseeable future, however he first needs to do his recurrent, and of course he will be doing it at AST. I am looking forward to retrain with them in the near future and greatly recommend others to do so.
