We didn't have to navigate the challenging waves with kayaks, were able to cover much ground in significantly less time and were still able to get an intimate tour of the best sea caves as Pete deftly navigated the vessel in and out of the caves. We wound up having a much better tour and saved enough money to pay for the previous nights dinner in the process. HIGHLY RECOMMENED!!!

We took the 3 hour Grand Tour and had a great day viewing and learning about the Apostle Islands…read more Book your reservations 1-2 days early if possible so weather forecasts are accurate enough, but seats are still available. We tried to book at 10am same day and only a few seats were remaining on the last cruise of the day (4:30pm departure). Seats are first come first served so we came 45 minutes early to line up and were able to get 4 seats together "upstairs" on the boat which had the best views and minimal engine noise. However, bring a jacket or sweatshirt since it gets so windy and cold once you're in the middle of Lake Superior (Yes, I was cold in the middle of July). There is a small concession stand inside the boat, but I chose to just bring some drinks and snacks.

This does cost more than the Apostle Islands Tour, but it's almost like a private sailing session. I would advise sunscreen due to exposure, even if you're not white. We were fortunate that autumn had a late ending, until the start of the 3rd week of October. Peak colors and perfect weather.

Upon entry, you can purchase your ticket directly on the dock in either a 1-way or round trip. If you're good with keeping a ticketed piece of paper, you can attempt the round trip if you need to come back. Otherwise, we didn't like the idea that our ticket could get lost so we always did a 1-way. Vehicles of all kinds load onto the ferry with an extremely efficient staff and then magic happens as you are transported in about 20 minutes. Dogs are welcomed on the ferry along with bikes, scooters and walk-ons. Our lesson learned was that we didn't need to take our vehicle everywhere and the next time we visit, we plan to do a lot more commuting via foot. In addition, it's way cheaper to travel without a vehicle. There is a ferry schedule posted online and lots of hard copy handouts around town. Once the ferry is going across Lake Superior, if you can exit the car (sometimes you can't depending on how tight parking is), you can walk up the steps to the observation deck or stand near your vehicle. I like that there's a variety of ways to travel and I imagine locals see this is just another bus or train route like any other means of transportation. Contrary, visitors will always be in awe as it's not something you see everyday. Shout out to the staff and operations as the ferry was always on time, on schedule and staff were kind. The ferry is fairly quick and convenient. During this time of year/day, they were running every 30 minutes. We literalist walked up, bought our tickets and boarded the ferry. We waited about 10 minutes as other people and vehicles boarded before departing the dock. We arrived about 20 minutes after departure.

Skip Madeline Island if your schedule is tight. Highlights: Sea Caves - my favorites were the northeastern edge of Sand Island (next to Justice Bay). They are so breathtakingly beautiful, especially in sunrise or sunset lighting. Since we took our boat, we were able to get up close to see all the spectacular details. If you don't have a boat, rent kayaks and a tour guide to get up close views. Grand Tour - we drove to Bayfield to ride a large catamaran boat for a 3 hour tour of the Apostle Islands. Visitor Centers - they were full of interesting info and has some fun merch for souvenirs. Many people rave about their experience visiting Madeline Island (the largest island) which isn't actually a part of the National Lakeshore, but we found it rather outdated and boring and left on the very next ferry.

I've been in the Hayward area for more than 50 years and saw places on this tour I've not seen before. I had nearly as much fun sitting next to my wife and looking at the landscape as I did when I was behind the wheel navigating the trails. Runamuk provides everything you need for a trip. Consider bringing ear protection - the machines are loud. Don't forget sunglasses and a rag to wipe to them clean after trekking a puddle or two.

We rode right after a big storm and got nice and wet and muddy from splashing through large rain puddles along the trails. The vehicles were very sturdy and we felt perfectly safe, even through some rough terrain. Jim also had us stop at a few spots along the way to show us some beautiful scenery and tell us a bit about the history of the area. Most of us hadn't been on or driven ATVs before and all of us would do it again! As far as the value goes, for 3 generations to spend a quarter of a day doing something we all enjoyed and had never done before, we felt it was worth every penny. Communication from Joan prior to our tour was excellent. She answered our questions promptly and thoroughly. Both she and Jim were wonderful. We will likely do business with them in the future! There was no water in the tanks and they couldn't solve why the battery kept draining. This dead battery caused us to be marooned for 7 hours one day and run aground the next. When we crashed into shore my son almost drowned, telling me he didn't know if he'd come up for air again. When I complained about his boat, the owner called me rudely and acted like a huge dick. Of course he took no responsibility. A loser outfit. Don't support these crooks.
