I've never liked having testing at this hospital. The Check In line has always been really long…read more The waiting area is not socially distanced. I've had the registration deck change the order of my tests, making me late and almost miss some of the prescheduled tests. So when one of my specialists scheduled an Echocardiogram at Beach General I tried to get her to switch to another hospital. Much to my dismay all other hospitals were booked beyond my appointment with the doctor. How surprised I was when I read the check in instructions (at the last minute of course) and saw that I was to enter via the hospital's main entrance. Upon arrival I asked at the desk where the heart check in was located. I walked, per instructions, down the hall just behind the desk & found that they had recently built a Heart Center across from the gift shop. It was an extremely short walk. Check-in & Registration were a breeze, staffed with friendly personnel. There was a small waiting room. That day spillover had to sit at the tables in the main entrance hall. The waiting room needs to be larger. But I'm not sure where it's located that is feasible. I had no idea how extensive their Heart Center was until I was called & followed an employee further down the hall to wait in the Cardiac Cath waiting area. I observed two Cardiac Cath doors in addition to the room where my Echo would be. I had to wait a long time in that seating area because of some sort of emergency. It was uncomfortable & tiring. But that type of thing isn't unexpected in a Heart Center. I kept seeing a doctor in scrubs going back & forth between a Cath Lab & the door I would eventually be taken through. When I was called I was surprised to see how large the testing area was. There were lots of technicians & a nursing station. I eventually learned that the area must completely wrap around from the waiting room to the area where I was tested and beyond. My driver that day relayed that during her waiting room stay doctors had come into that area & told family members that their loved one had done fine. I'm really not sure what that area contains in addition to Cath Labs & testing. In my testing room the technician was very thorough & professional. Upon exiting the room following the test I learned that she must have been in charge. Other personnel were asking her how to handle an unexpected patient. My results came through very quickly on MyChart. I've since learned from other testing that results are prioritized for some Sentara Cardiologists. Much to my dismay what I saw was that the results were significantly worse than the Echo the previous year. When I saw the doctor he eased my mind. Showing the pictures adjacency he told me that the pictures from this Echo were far superior to those a year ago & aligned with my last Cardiac Cath. Never would I hesitate to return to the Sentara Heart Center for testing. The technician who performed my Echo was obviously excellent. That said, should I ever require another Cardiac Cath I want the procedure to be done at the Sentara Heart Hospital.

Sentara has done a fabulous job with their Virginia Beach General Comprehensive Breast Center…read more Enter through the Advanced Imaging & Diagnostic Center lobby, which is located at the north end of the hospital complex. There is another lobby door inside Advanced Imaging, which is the Comprehensive Breast Center. The first plus to this addition is that, for the testing done in the center, you no longer are a part of the general population checking in at the Outpatient lobby. Being grouped with people who aren't sick is wonderful. Avoiding sneezing and germs is a good thing. The pluses don't end with the above. The Breast Center is a smoothly operating department. Check in is within the center's lobby. The wait is short. And the employees are friendly. There is an inner lobby within the center where ladies can wait in their hospital gowns if their technician feels more testing is required. My technician was thorough with my annual 3D Mammogram. I was done in record time. And did I tell you how I started having the 3D testing? Commercial insurance usually doesn't cover it. So you have to pay extra. At checkin they asked if I wanted 3D. After I replied "No" I was told that Medicare payed for it. The answer quickly changed to "Yes". Thank you Medicare for recognizing that good preventative care lowers costs. When you have completed your Mammogram the technician hands you a card. They preschedule your next appointment based on insurance requirements and the time of day the patient normally prefers. Sentara Virginia Beach General has made this annual ritual much more easy and efficient. I love the Comprehensive Breast Center concept.

I've been doing them for about 8 years, but I still dread them, because I hate needles and IVs and because it's really uncomfortable to have to lay completely still for 45 minutes in the loud MRI machine with your boobs out, face-down in a superman position with your arms out in front of you and an IV pulling at your veins. It's cold and uncomfortable. It just sucks. But these ladies, Anne and JoAnne I believe, were so kind. They asked me what music I liked and they said they'd play it for me, they both took good care of me and covered me with blankets, put earplugs in my ears, nestled me on the table once I was all settled in the right position for the reading, and then put some headsets on me with John Mayer softly playing. Check-in was easy and efficient with a friendly receptionist and the front and greeters to point you in the right direction. I was called back promptly on time and I was shown to a clean changing room area to remove all the metals from my person and put all my things in a locker area and change into a gown. In this area there is also a bathroom and the blood pull area to insert the IV for the contrast dye. I was in and out in about an hour. I normally go to the Sentara Leigh location but they couldn't see me in the two-week window this time. This center has a larger MRI machine and they had headsets for music which I've never had before. Both locations are nice with friendly staff and are efficient. But I may have liked this location a bit more. It also may have been because of those two kind ladies who fawned over me and made me feel loved and taken care of. Staff at these imaging locations are always amazing, caring and kind. It makes a big difference to the patients.

One Registration & large waiting area also include a Breast Center, Diagnostic Center & Lab. How surprised I was when Central Scheduling offered that location as the next available appointment. The time was also perfect. It was early evening when both the parking lot & the waiting room were almost completely empty. Although the arrival time was quoted as 30 prior to the testing, I was taken back pretty quickly, The technicians in the MRI room couldn't have been nicer. After noticing that I had no clothing with metal, I was allowed to have the procedure in my street clothes rather than a hospital gown. They were careful to assure that I was OK on the table with my bad back. First a pillow was placed under my knee. Then at my request they placed another one under my back. My head was secured in an open faced chamber so it wouldn't move. Next they offered little ear stoppers & headphones. After asking my choice of music (70's) they began playing a tune that wasn't to my liking. I was asked to name a group I liked (Eagles) & a new playlist began. I was happily singing along with the music until I looked up & saw two wide eyed faces staring down at me. My response was "I guess you don't want me to sing along." Both faces emphatically shook their heads NO. The machine was wonderful. You could barely hear the usual MRI sounds. One setting even felt like you were getting a back massage. The hardest thing was controlling my strong urge to sing along with the music. When the MRI was completed a technician helped me get off the table & I went on my way. The location is quite convenient. The Sentara Brock Cancer Center is a part of the ever expanding Sentara Leigh campus. It's the gorgeous building sitting on Virginia Beach Boulevard just to the east of the new Sentara Orthopedic Surgery Center. Both buildings have their own parking & also share a parking garage. Located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Kempsville Road & Virginia Beach Boulevard, entrance & exit is possible from either street. My experience & care was so good that I scheduled my follow-up CatScan at that Imaging Center. An added benefit is that appointments are available sooner than most Sentara facilities. I think most people, like me, don't know that there is a center in the building. So it's not requested as often. This is a facility I would highly recommend, from check in to exit. It's beautiful, clean, convenient & filled with friendly & helpful employees.

It's right by the elevators and it's huge, with two entrances and a huge intake and waiting area. It runs like a well-oiled machine. First you check-in, then someone calls you over to verify all your info and appointment, and then they take you back for your MRI or Mammogram or advanced cat scan, etc. I ended up having to come back the very next day for more imaging so I was here twice and both times were quick and pleasant. All the staff were wonderful. You're given a gown, lock your things in a locker, and will be called back when they're ready to do your imaging. Both days, different staff, all super professional and nice and calming. I was able to easily and quickly get my results and hop upstairs to have my follow-up appointment one of the days with my physician who already had the results. Boom! Hopefully, I can start getting my MRIs here too and won't have to go to separate places anymore. Win, win.

When she got a personal call, on the other hand, she was extremely loud and unprofessional, laughing/cackling at the top of her lungs with numerous patients waiting. The other staff were nice to my grandmother and very patient. She didn't want to get this test done as is, so they took the time to make her comfortable. They have a coffee/cocoa and cracker area which is nice. The saltine crackers were super stale though. Guess it wasn't meant for me to have. Lol. Anyway - the ladies are very nice and it's efficient. No one really wants to have advanced screening and MRI testing done but if it has to be done it's nice if the people are pleasant and kind to you and everyone is competent and good at their jobs. Last year when I had my annual breast MRI - they used a needle that hurt my arm/vein because it was too big. So this year I informed the nurse that since I'm very petite I wanted them to try to use the smallest needle the had so it wouldn't hurt my arm the entire time I was in the MRI machine. She found a smaller one and very adeptly started the IV. Someone else was finishing up their MRI so she pulled the privacy curtain and got me some blankets for my legs and feet so I wasn't cold and bundled me up like a baby. She talked to me for a good 5-10 minutes easily while we waited and we made pleasant conversation. She was very personable and friendly and put me at ease. Once I went into the room for the breast MRI I opened my gown - laid on the table with my boobs over the boob holes and they covered me again with blankets so I wouldn't get cold and connected the contrast dye to my IV. They gave me a call button in case I started to freak out or had a reaction to the dye and I was off to the races for me 20-45 minute MRI scan. It wasn't as bad this time as last time because I had asked my doctor to give me something for nerves so I was relaxed prior to the screening. I think I may have fallen asleep after the first 5-10 minutes. It seemed like it was over fairly quickly. All in all - they do a good job here and they're kind to me when no one really wants to be there to begin with. So, although I dread it, their efficient and well-run center makes it a bit less of a bad thing.

We immediately panicked & checked Urgent Care closing times. CHKD Urgent Care closed in 45 minutes. We made it just in time. When they called him back his Dad went with him & I waited in the clean spacious waiting room. Other people came & went without my family returning. Finally the security guard told me the Lobby was closing & that I could go back to the exam room with my family. The exam room area was spacious with a large number of curtained exam rooms surrounding an equally large medical personnel station. The staff at the station were friendly and greeted me when I entered. The quality of care was phenomenal. An extra doctor was called in to consult since it was an unusual rash. They were extremely determined to solve his problem, which was the reason for the delay. It wasn't an allergy, caused by bites or even something like poison ivy. It was a viral rash. They also did a throat swab for strep. The first doctor explained things concisely & offered suggestions for care. I was very impressed that they took so much time with him after closing hour. The next morning a friendly person called with the report that the strep test was positive. She called in medication to my local pharmacy. It was an extremely positive experience. We are so lucky to have Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters on the Norfolk GeneraL / EVMS / CHKD Campus. Their Virginia Beach Urgent Care facility is located on a Loehmann's Plaza out parcel on Virginia Beach Boulevard. It is a relatively new facility built in the late 2010's. I watched its construction as I drove home from work before I retired. At that time, with an adult son, I never envisioned having a personal need for it. But I still remembered the panic I experienced when something was wrong with my son. So I was happy families in Virginia Beach had access to the facility. Now I'm happy for its help with my Grandson.
