I own a pest control company and Mary's Bookkeeping has been nothing but professional and helpful…read more We are so grateful for her services. We look forward to a long relationship with her and her staff.

I never even had an opportunity to use Mary's bookkeeping, so I can't speak to her services. My…read moreexperience was in setting up my practice to work with Mary. My first clue was when she quoted me an hourly rate of $75/hour, but then wanted to charge me $350/month without ever having SEEN my books or my needs. She said she's been doing this a "long time" and could "tell" it would be 5-7 hours per month of work. That being said, what if it was 5? Or less than 5? Would I get a refund? No response. But I'm in need, so I still said ok. After dozens of emails back and forth, I provided her with passwords for my business accounts, credit cards, and Quick books portable file. I set her up with everything she needed to start my work. The second clue she gave me was asking me (again) which accounts were which (letting me know she couldn't handle complex law firm accounts). She also asked me repeatedly for things I had previously sent her in the same email string. When I responded to her that everything had been provided she emailed me back immediately and stated, "We have decided we are too busy to handle your books." Period. Mind you, by this time, I have told my current bookkeeper that I'm going with someone new. Oy-Vey! After receiving ALL my client's private information in my QB file, my usernames, passwords, statements, etc. and me firing my other bookkeeper, I'll have to change everything now and there's nothing I can do to retrieve my QB portable file. To say I was disappointed is a complete understatement. She's definitely not as organized as she claims to be. I definitely don't see how she has this many 5 star ratings. ??? UPDATE: just read her reply comment on my post. Takes no responsibility for her role in what happened. Just puts it back on me. Whatever Mary. You can't even be honest that you said you were "too busy". *eye roll*. Clearly I dodged a bullet reading your other 1 star reviews.

I must join everyone else and give the highest ratings to this firm, especially my collaboration…read morewith Tai on tax preparation. He is detail oriented, thorough and provides very useful information on the tax code and the actions we take together. I have worked with him for a number of years and he makes paying your taxes as pleasant as they can be, under the circumstances. lol The prices are also very affordable !

I find it disappointing when a business responds to a negative review primarily by defending its…read moreactions rather than taking the opportunity to understand the customer's concerns and acknowledge where its communication could have been better. Since the owner has now responded to my review, I would like to address each of her three points. 1. Roth conversion calculations We were never told that calculating the Roth conversions would involve an additional charge. Had we known that, we may have reconsidered having the calculations performed. More importantly, regardless of whether there was a charge, the calculations provided to us by Tai were incorrect. He sent the calculations to us twice, and both versions were wrong. These calculations involved our actual tax liability and potential Roth conversion decisions. Providing incorrect tax calculations is a serious concern because a client could reasonably rely on that information and potentially make financial decisions based on it, which could result in an unexpected tax liability or penalties. The issue was therefore not simply whether the calculations were included in our client copy. The issue was that the calculations we were given were incorrect. 2. Mortgage interest The owner's response says that our mortgage interest statement was included in our return and that the information was used in determining whether itemizing deductions or taking the standard deduction was more beneficial. That was never clearly communicated to us by Tai. He did not explain that the mortgage interest information from the prior year was being used in that way, nor did he explain how changes in our mortgage-related expenses could affect that calculation. Mortgage-related expenses can change from year to year. For example, changes resulting from a loan modification or restructuring, property taxes, insurance, or other changes affecting our mortgage could potentially affect the itemized deduction calculation. As clients, we should have been given a clear explanation of how that information was being handled rather than having to infer it afterward. 3. Filing date and payment date This is the issue that concerned me the most. My complaint was never about whether Smart Tax & Accounting has a procedure requiring final client authorization before filing. I understand that authorization is necessary. The issue was that authorization to file and confirmation of when the return would actually be filed are two different things. Tai asked us to authorize the return, but he never confirmed with us when he would actually file it. He did not ask us what filing date we preferred or confirm the date on which the return would be submitted. That distinction matters. A client may need a refund by a particular date, or conversely, may need to make sure a tax payment is withdrawn on a particular date. Simply providing a payment date somewhere in the documents is not the same as clearly communicating and confirming when the return will actually be filed. For me, this was a communication issue, not an issue with Smart Tax's general authorization protocol. Overall, I am disappointed that the owner's response does not appear to address the actual concerns described in my original review. Instead, several of the points seem to explain why Smart Tax's procedures were technically followed without addressing whether those procedures and communications were clear and accurate from the client's perspective. I am leaving my original review in place because it reflects my actual experience with Smart Tax and the problems we encountered. I believe prospective clients should have the opportunity to hear both sides of the experience. If the owner would genuinely like to discuss what happened and review the facts of our particular situation, I am open to continuing the conversation through Yelp.
