Andrew Burrows, the owner, and his team are great people to work with. Their service is impeccable with an honesty - they actually try to save you money on repairs! - that's a rarity in today's world of hustle and bustle. They service all makes and models of cars, utes - almost whatever you drive - with a quick turnaround time and labour costs that won't break the bank! They also handle Safety Certificates - got one for a Honda Accord I recently sold - and also sell batteries, ice and even BBQ gas. However, go there for the automotive service. If ever in need of secure parking in Fortitude Valley you can't go past McWhirters. McWhirters is a…read morebig secure parking lot, with multiple levels. You can either enter it from Ballow or Warner street but I always tend to take the Warner entrance for some reason. Like all secure parking, it does come at a price however. Prices change depending on what day you are there but generally on weekdays it is $$6 for 20 mins or less and then steadily gets more and more expensive as time goes by. On weekends it will start at $9 for a half hour of parking privilege and then rise and rise some more. There are deals for early birds or late leavers so it is worth checking out the website. The best part about McWhirters Secure Parking is the convenient location, being smack bang in the middle of the Valley. It is also open 24 hours so if you are the sober driver you can take everyone home after a long night of drinks and dancing. Funnily enough, I did catch a couple having a more intimate moment in their car on the second level of McWhirters once. In fact, I was quite impressed at the bouncing of the car, the unintentional accidental beeps, and the fact that all this was happening at around 10pm on a Tuesday of all days. Most of the time however, McWhirters is just a good old place to park your car.

Tight quarters and overall slightly depressing rooms. Bathrooms are shared (though I think there was a next option up with private bathrooms) and nicely clean, with good showers. We never had problems with lines or anything. The breakfast is a fairly basic cereal and toast (with jam/vegemite/peanut butter,etc.) The staff were quite pleasant though seemed rather busy when we were there. They said we could leave stuff there while we were out and about on our checkout day (before catching a train in the afternoon), but it turned out there wasn't any actual locked space to do this in...they just had us leave it in the corner in the dining room...which was fine in the end but certainly made us nervous, and we consequently ended up taking a bit more with us than planned. The location is one of the best features - easy walking distance of the train station (especially once you figure out the closest entrance!) and close to downtown and the river. The house itself is also quite cool, with lots of antiques and knick-knacks. Overall, a perfectly acceptable spot for the price!

I had to run errands as well as visit a friend at the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital. As I was driving down Butterfield St towards Bowen Bridge Road, about to go the carpark of the hospital, I suddenly remember there was a BP on the corner of these roads. YES! Alleluia, I'm saved. How convenient, a petrol station just by the hospital was exactly what I needed. I filled up and queued to pay. As I waited in the line, I got tempted by the Wild Bean Cafe here which sells muffins (and the like) and obviously, coffee. I promptly hopped out of line and ordered myself a coffee and got a chocolate muffin. Both were delicious. The muffin was so rich and fluffy and the coffee was very smooth and professionally made. The customer service was just as delightful, with both Wild Bean Cafe staff and the BP staff. Both staff members took time to ask how my morning has been, as they processed payment. So lovely to get this service, especially at a busy petrol station.

It was great to find out more about the car I'd been driving for seven years! I was more than confident about leaving my car overnight in Robin's capable hands. He called back the next day to let me know that he'd had a good look at everything and he wasn't comfortable about fitting any replacement parts, because he wasn't confident that they'd fix the issue, and he didn't want to charge me for anything that may not have actually been a solution. He was genuine in explaining everything he'd looked at, and all the possible causes he'd crossed off the list after investigating. He recommended I take the car to a Mazda centre specifically, and despite labour and overnight holding, he didn't charge me a cent. What a bloody decent gentleman.
