Even though the office itself is very…read morerun-down and in need of significant renovation, I always felt the dental care was good, so I overlooked the condition of the space. This week, I went in for my routine six-month cleaning and X-rays. Everything went well, and I was told my X-rays looked great. Before I left, however, a new dentist came in for a quick exam and told me I needed two dental procedures within the next couple of weeks. It didn't feel quite right, but I trusted the recommendation and scheduled the appointment. Something continued to bother me, so I sought a second opinion from a prosthodontist. After a thorough evaluation, she told me the recommended procedures were unnecessary and strongly advised me not to move forward with them. I called West End Dental Associates to express my concerns. I was told the dentist I saw was a new hire and that the head dentist would call me the following day to discuss the situation. Unfortunately, I never received that call. What concerns me most is not just that I was given what another dental specialist considered poor clinical advice, but also the complete lack of follow-up after I raised my concerns. That experience has caused me to lose confidence in the practice, and I will be taking my dental care elsewhere.

So perhaps it was my minimized expectations that made my visit to All American Smile Dental Studios (for the record, that's a TERRIBLE name) so great. Everyone I spoke to on the phone leading up to my visit was super nice. The women at the front desk (their names escape me) were SUPER nice. Dr. Benjamin was super nice. But the real star of this show was my hygenist, Tamora (I could be remembering her name wrong). With her burgundy hair and delightful Belarusian accent, she was beyond nice; she was sweet and reassuring and thorough and has the hands of an angel. It was the most gentle (yet effective) cleaning I've ever had. When I commented that the staining she was attempting to clean was likely the result of a heavy coffee consumption, I was told "live your life. Enjoy your coffee. I'll be here to clean your teeth." I mean, come on. One thing of note is that the things they saw and pointed out were completely consistent with my previous dentist (I have a cavity that everyone loves to "watch" and I'm constantly getting nagged about having a particular wisdom tooth pulled), so that in and of itself was reassuring.

For me going to the dentist is a bit different than most people. I had a traumatic experience 5…read moreyears ago that has not just affected my life but my ability to bring myself to a dentist. So recently a crown broke and I had to find a dentist..a really good one....I did my homework and came up with a few in NYC...By fate or luck I ended up in Dr. Angelica Silivria chair. I come from a family in healthcare.  Almost everyone in my immediate family is a surgeon, pharmacists, clinician, scientist or MD of some sort.  From a young age, I have been taught to inquire about any medical procedure being performed on me in painstaking details. Before meeting Dr Silivria , I met and rejected 3 dentist who were unable to demonstrate their knowledge to me sufficiently.  One of them is a Fifth Avenue celebrity dentist who has a 6 month waiting list  and charged me full price(no insurance accepted)  Still not good enough.  I do not care about a fancy office or equipment, if the knowledge and technique is lacking. When I met  Dr. Silivria for a consultation, not only was she extremely knowledgeable, she patiently tolerated my barrage of questions, answering calmly and precisely.  It was clear to me from that moment  if I ever became anxious in the chair during a procedure, she would provide the serenity I needed.    Dr. Silivria took a great conservative approach to my cavities and fillings and when I ended up requiring a root canal, with crown lengthening surgery, her staff squeezed me in for a quick checkup and referred me quickly to an periodontist for my surgery, and ensured my X-rays were sent over before I arrived to their office.  She is attentive, friendly, and very efficient.  She answers all of my questions before and after any appointment, and I find her to be incredibly knowledgeable.   Dr. Silivria sets herself apart from other NYC dentists by providing personalized and compassionate dental care. Her NYC dental office is staffed with highly trained dental care professionals.  Her office has also taken every precaution since COVID-19, highly recommended.

After searching around and trying two others who…read moreseemed pretty shady & wanted to do things to my teeth that my hometown doctor totally disagreed on (yes, I got a second opinion thankfully from someone I trust & whom I would have had do the work back home), I found this place through my insurance provider website, and I picked it solely on Dr. Shick's reviews and location. I am going to agree though with the other reviewers that the receptionist can be a little rude and come off unfriendly, but she does do a good job when you move past the scheduling "new patient" paperwork, insurance verifying, etc. I personally almost cancelled my appointment with this place because of her- very unfriendly, cuts you off, kind of nasty, rushing tone- BUT sooo glad I stuck it out and gave the dentist a chance. I was just scheduled for a cleaning/check up. Dr. Masuga was wonderful! Very calming, patient, friendly, thorough & efficient in her job. The "best part" of my cleaning/visit was that instead of using that terrible little pointy "pic" to clean your teeth & feel like someone's yanking your tooth out, they use this little water pressed tool that is not like a "pic" at all and your mouth isn't in pain an hour after your visit. I was AMAZED. I even asked her why she didn't b/c I started to think I wasn't getting the right cleaning! She then explained to me that there is a new tool they use instead because it's easier on the gums. It was quick, painless cleaning, and my teeth looked great. She took a lot of time looking over the x-rays of my teeth as well so that was re-assuring that she really actually cared about each & every tooth and got a good look at them. So yes- I suggest sucking it up with the receptionist at first and go to this place. The schedules are great and they will fit you quickly. *They do not like Zoc Doc! So just call to schedule....and prepare yourself to possibly deal with the receptionist :)

When I called back to discuss this with the office, they admitted it will take several months before the transition to Zen Dental is complete. They insisted I would need to pay up front, even though my insurance would not agree to reimburse me given their current in-network status. Such a shame to see that this new practice is behaving unethically. Needless to say, I will be finding a new dentist.
