To the great, amazing folks of Wichita --…read more I am writing this letter to inform you that there is something very special RIGHT HERE in your backyard -- and you may not even be aware of it. KyuRamen is not your average ordinary ramen house. This restaurant went above and beyond to bring you an extravagant and authentic Japanese experience. You don't have to leave the comfort zone of Wichita, nor do you have to speak Japanese to experience this! The interior design of this restaurant is absolutely stunning and they offer a transcendental experience with scrupulous detail. The ramen tastes amazing, appetizers are great and most importantly, you'll be snapping pictures the minute you enter. Do not sleep on this place. PLEASE! Signed, your brother from California (LA/SF). You guys literally have one of the most impressive ramen houses I have EVER walked into. And that's over 40 years of life in LA's Little Tokyo, San Francisco, and vacations in Japan and South Korea. In Kansas of all places!?? How spoiled you are.

I'm a regular at this restaurant because the food is consistently delicious and the service is…read moregreat--but tonight, I left disappointed enough to write this review. We came in as a party of five at 8:30pm, fully aware they close at 9. We ordered quickly and respectfully, excited to enjoy one of my favorite dishes: the chicken katsu. I've raved about it to friends, especially the generous portions--normally two large, pounded-out chicken breasts per order. But tonight was a different story. We ordered a bibimbap, 10 wings, a roll, gyoza, a child's katsu, tempura and two chicken katsu meals (close to $20 each). For our katsus instead of full portions, it was obvious the kitchen split one order between both plates--then handed the scraps to the child's meal, which we were told would be "half" an adult size. It wasn't even close. Not only was the portion insulting, but the food wasn't fresh. The chicken was dry, overcooked, and hard as a rock. I couldn't even bite through one piece--I had to spit it out. When we brought it up, they offered 10% off. Honestly, that felt like a slap in the face. I had just convinced people to come here based on how good this meal used to be, and instead I ended up apologizing to my guests for bringing them here and still paid for meals we weren't fully served. If you were low on chicken, in a rush to close, or just had a lazy cook that night--own it. Don't try to pass off a single meal as two. That's not just disappointing--it's dishonest. This experience was a joke. And if that's how regulars get treated, I will regular no more.

The appetizers were difficult to…read moreeat without spoons (which were not provided and I felt weird asking for one so I ended up recycling my husband's spoon from his soup). The sushi was wrapped really loosely and fell apart while I picked it up with chopsticks. My husband's beef teriyaki was good and he had no qualms on the flavor but again presentation was a little messy. Service was good. They refilled our waters and soda without issue. The food came out sporadically and was not sent out together, which left my husband waiting to eat while my food got cold (crispy rice) and then warm (sushi), respectively. Ambiance was dark and moody. Like hard to see dark; there was not enough light from the tiny candle on the table to make up for it. I get the vibe but I would opt for more light overall. The decorations on the walls were tasteful. The overhead lighting felt like they raided the outdoor patio light section of Lowe's when it was clearance in the seasonal garden section. The Tiber on the walls was nice but again felt a bit DIY. My biggest issue was with the tableware. I understand that disposable chopsticks are easier than reusable ones but honestly it would have elevated the meal a lot for me. I know it's picky but for the vibe and location it seems like it would have been an easy add.

Sushi bar seating for about 10 is also available. It seems clean and typical for this tier of restaurant. I'd come here again. Super close to the Marriott Wichita and some of the east side hotels.

The service was good and our server was very helpful and really took care of our concerns. The food was good for the area. We had the classic and mentai gyoza. We tried the deep and pan fried and end up liking more the pan fried. We also tried the iron pan fried rice, I like that it isn't oily and just enough. My favorite is the karaage coated in bamboo charcoal, that was really good. And of course for the drink, the shikuwasa! I missed the taste of it - it is basically like a key lime but more on the sweeter side. Overall I like the interior and exterior design and how they placed tables around. Also the bathroom is pretty clean!

By the end of course 3, I was ready to get my check and leave. The time in between each course was painfully slow. Next, there was absolutely no thought that went into each course. Everything that came out was convoluted with no flow in the way the courses were presented. It was clear that the chef lacked vision in what he wanted to do and it showed. They had advertised A5 wagyu but what was presented was over cooked deli meat slapped on top of a giant bed of salad or compressed on top of sushi rice. I couldn't even finish the dishes after one bite. The entire time, I couldn't help but wonder why did they have to ruin the integrity of such a delicate protein? Not once but three times. Which brings me to the next course, the wagyu burger patty itself was overcooked and the fondue sauce that it was slapped on made everything soggy and disintegrated before I could even get a bite. This was by far the worst meal I've ever had and I won't be returning. *The best part of our meal was our server who was great and very knowledgeable in presenting each course.
