We were seated outside and could enjoy the beautiful Volksdorf setting on an uncharacteristically warm September evening. The service was quick, attentive, and very inviting and respectful. The food came out right away. All of the dishes - from the bread and butter to the spaetzle to even the latte - were outstanding. Everything was well worth it. This is definitely a higher-end place that isn't pretentious or off-putting trying to be gourmet. It's very rustical yet at the same time modern. The staff is young and there is nothing stuffy about it. The food is well prepared and creative. I had a daily special as a starter and then a fish as the main course. My buddy had a salad to start and the gnocchi which he raved about. I really enjoyed my meal and found the accompanying wine just as good. Someone else complained about the portions and pricing in another review. I do have to agree that portions are on the smaller side and pricing is definitely at the higher end of the spectrum. I don't feel that the place is a rip-off or anything along those lines though nevertheless. It's not true gourmet eating but it's also not your every day, stop in for a bite place. If you come with those expectations, and knowing the area, you won't be blown away by the price. We had starters, mains, two glasses of wine each, two bottles or water and two espressos to complete the meal. Total cost was a touch over 100 Euro which is totally fine in my opinion for the quality of food, quaintness of the location and polite, professional service. I'm definitely coming back with the wife. I do recommend reserving, as once there is no longer outdoor seating or the weather turns, there aren't all too many tables inside and the place seems quite popular. There's also no parking on site so you had to search around on the street a bit but it's always easy enough to find something without walking all too far.

The ambient is not as cosy as it used to be, but I guess they tried to change the concept to a more chic place. They were closed for a week for renovation, but we could not see any changes. In fact due to the the fact that they could not use the old name (they already order the lampshades with the old name on it) they just taped-up the old name with black tape, and similar for the menu, where they just taped the new name over the old one. All a bit chic and cheap... We ordered 2 Schnitzel (mine was completely salty and the other rather needed some, so they might have salted mine twice and the other not at all - the Bratkartoffeln were far to crisp and hard inside, and also the portion size was as small as the schnitzel itself...), 1 glass of wine and 2 small bier. The bill came to over €60! Despite the fact we didn't even got some bread as it is custom nowadays in restaurants of this price category... The service was nice and friendly, apart form the new headwaiter, who seemed to check all the waiters moves like they could not be trusted at all... OK, I think this was it so far for us, we might come back once they open the garden, and hopefully they will plant some bushes again, otherwise it will feel like sitting right on the close by busy road... Unfortunately I can not recommend this place, really sorry since it used to be such a great place in Volsdorf where I grew up, and we used to come here very often, but with the previous owners it used to be full - non-stop - and it was really hard to get a place, especially on a bank holiday weekend...

It actually doesn't matter if you go to this one in Volksdorf or any other. I've been to a couple in Hamburg and one in Frankfurt and always experienced the same exellent quality food and friendly service. They started off over 40 years ago in Hamburg as a solely steak house so they are masters of preparing steak and sourcing the best quality. Over recent years they broadened their menu so you can get other meat and vegetarian dishes as well. I ususally go for Mrs. Rumpsteak which comes with baked potato, sour creme (plenty of it) and garlic bread. And of course a lovely salad with the dressing of your choice to start with.
