I was shown photos and given records indicating I was adopting a young puppy. When the dog was delivered, he was much larger than what was represented. After a vet visit, I was told he is likely about a year older than the age I was given. I love my dog and would never return him, but honesty is essential when adopting. Very disappointed with the entire adoption process. My family and I wanted to add a new member to the family (already have two). We end up making it to the final round and a volunteer tells the owner that the dog was scared of my kids. First of all, the dog doesn't know us and it is quite normal for him to feel like that. The owner didn't even have the courtesy to call us, everything was via email. The dog started to lighten up after a little. I felt like her excuse to not give us the dog was bogus. He was considered a "long timer". I can see why. The chihuahua's name was buttercup from Second chance animal shelter. I respect the need to dig deep for the best for the pet but I don't think they were fair. No wonder this baby is still without a home. read more

Adopt-a-Pet is how we found our wonderful kitten Tyrone (né Palmer). Yes, their application form is long and detailed, but this shows that they take their animals' well-being very seriously when considering adopters. We filled out an application online and were contacted by Linda the very next day. We were able to visit our kitten at his foster mom Marla's home prior to adoption. The whole process was complete in two and a half days, and we got to bring our boy home already vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. Since he was in foster care since birth, he is wonderfully social and sweet. We've had him home for less than a week, but he has already brightened our lives so much. We're so excited to spend the next couple decades with him! read more

What's up with the bad reviews? People do realize that this is an outfit run 100% by dedicated and caring volunteers, and the animals are fostered in their own private homes? These are people who really love animals. There is no physical shelter, a la PAWS (who is also awesome) or Anti Cruelty Society. The animals are in private homes, and get loving care. The adoption fee is a bit steep, but when you consider that the animals you get are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots and probably housebroken and trained, it seems like a bargain. They're ready to go! The application - yes, there are personal questions. No, you are not adopting a child, but you ARE adopting a LIVING THING who may have quirks and issues. They want to make sure you are right for the dog, and vice versa. Bottom line, they want the dogs to find FOREVER homes, not bounce around back and forth. I lost my precious GSD to cancer last March, and while my heart is irrepairably broken, I figured the thing to do would be to award some other little shelter dog the Dog Lottery award and give them a life like Egon had for years. And I was horribly dog-lonely. Enter a little pup I met on the Adopt A Pet website. I met her, and was smitten. Not in love yet, but . . . smitten. Spent a good amount of time with the foster mom and got all the details on this pup. Trained, housebroken, socialized . . . a really good little dog. I decide to give her a try. Long story short . . . there's an issue at the vet. Dogs get wiggy at vets, we know this. Adopt a Pet was incredibly responsive, helpful and supportive. Phone consultations, a fantastic Dog Behaviorist was sent out, and I decided to go ahead and keep this sweet pup. There's not an issue, it was an overreaction, and we can avoid this happening indeed. SO very helpful!!!! She's not another Egon, but she is awesome in her own little, different and completely sweet way. I've got this goofy, tiny little 40 pound dog that cracks me up every day. This rescue is based in Mt. Prospect, IL. I don't believe any of these out-of-state reviews are for this actual organization because my experience was amazing. The woman who runs it was friendly and wanted the necessary information to make a decision as to if we were the right people for the dog. We were able to move through the adoption process smoothly since I was able to provide everything she asked for. The foster mom, Kim, was simply amazing. From the moment I spoke with her on the phone, I knew she cared deeply for the well being of her fosters. I am thankful everyday she chose us to be our sweet boy's fur mom & dad. read more

I'm a little peeped off over a 4lb yorkie that was posted Friday, I inquired the care taker messaged a few questions then once again nothing! I'm only 67 and have been turned down more times than I can count. I have a created a dog heaven, I'm semi-retired, so have loads of time to spend with a dog. There appears to be some excellent organizations, but many are heart sting names that are simply a cover. But, your time can be consumed immensely because the most attractive pets remain on long after they have been removed, if they ever really existed at all. Or, after attempts to find that pet the suggested answer is to pay a monthly fee "to be the first to know." I will do the following. Find a reputable organization first, be patient and work through one or two of those exclusively. Or stay with AAP and pretend you are in Vegas and throw the dice. read more

I adopted my cute kitty Teenie from Adopt-A-Pet and absolutely love the animal shelter. They are very well organized and very professional. They are a cageless animal shelter without a central facility location. All of the animals are in volunteer homes which is great because you have an idea of their personalities before submitting an application. They are quite strict in their adoption process and for very good reason. Too many adopt cats & dogs, only to relinquish them later or they end up neglected. They go through these measures to ensure the animal you adopt from them will have a safe, caring home for life. Adopt-A-Pet truly cares for the animals they adopt out. They have monthly adoption shows at Pet Smart, Christmas photos with Santa for your pets (dare I put up the picture of my kitty with Santa!? haha), and an annual raffle for the animals with some great prizes. I highly recommend adopting from Adopt-A-Pet. And if you feel like pitching in, volunteer with them! read more

Terrible experience. For several weeks I jumped through hoops, answering questions, texts, inconveniencing my friends and vet for recommendations and records. I spoke to one woman initially then was contacted by someone from the dog's actual location. Seemed they hadn't communicated with each other. So, I had to repeat my info & ask all my questions again. Much of the info the second person provided was completely different than what the second person had to say. Confusing and beginning to feel suspicious. Finally, everything was in order. I texted 3 days prior to the dog's arrival in PA, that I had hired a trainer for the dog and was excited about bringing her home. When the arrival date came & went, I called the person I'd been working with and was informed she was adopted at their adoption event! I could not believe it and I was offered no explanation. This Adopt a Pet site has to be a scam. For months I've been responding within hours of receiving their emails with one of three results. 1. The pet is no longer available. 2. I fill out an application but never hear back. 3. The pet is from a shelter some distance away that limits adoptions to local residents or which has absurd requirements such requiring returning the pet for spaying, visits to a trainer, or other officious nonsense. Short of avoiding adoption by animal abusers such as those involved in dog fighting or research, it is hard for me to understand the bureaucratic hoops one is put through to adopt a pet these days. Understand that this group has a PREMIUM plan of which they repeatedly remind you. So for $10/month you can jump the queue and get the email alerts ahead of everyone else. I had no problems . I'm very happy with my dog ! I do wish there were more photos available on line. The gal I got my dog from was very responsive. Adopt a pet might be a great organization but the organizations they work with are not. I recently made an application for a dog from Houston Street Dogs. It was a complex, lengthy application that took more than an hour to complete. Within 2 minutes of when I submitted it I got a reply "Thanks but we are not the right rescue for you! Best of luck in your search". REALLY??? Since my husband and I are both in our 70's, and that is the first question they ask, I assume that was why they rejected us. I emailed asking why but no response. This is not a pet rescue looking for good homes for pets. I am not sure what it is. Why don't you stick to getting on the nerves of your neighbors and leave the reviewing of this AMAZING organization up to the adults. This organization is full of people who care so much about homeless pets. If you're uncomfortable answering these basic questions, you're obviously being deceitful in some way. These questions are NOT that personal. Asking for a copy of the lease to prove you're allowed cats/dogs? They aren't asking for your signed copy with personal info, they're asking for an official document from the place you reside, stating that you are actually allowed animals and what their limits are (size, breeds of dogs, how many, etc.) Every legitimate shelter is going to ask these questions. Let me say that again. EVERY -SINGLE LEGITIMATE SHELTER IS GOING TO ASK QUESTIONS. We have tried to adopt from this site before and it seems totally out of line and a waste of time. They emailed me from the office and I explained what happened and never got a response, they just ignored me. Sad to say do not waste your time with this site unless you know someone there!! First, I love Adopt-a-Pet. I have adopted two cats from them and am so thankful to them for being so great and introducing me to my babies :) I liked them so much, in fact, that I drove pretty far out into the boondocks to meet both of my cats (separate adoptions), rather than going to other adoption places nearby in the city or Evanston. My ex-roommate (who is still one of my best friends) has also adopted two cats from them. It was actually through her family, who has fostered for AoP, that I became familiar with the organization. Since they don't have a central facility, all of the cats are fostered, either in homes (the majority) or at Wilmette Pet or Thee Fish Bowl (in Evanston). This is a really great thing, since they have all been familiarized with people, and often other dogs, cats, and children. AoP really makes an effort to make sure that the pet you adopt fits well with your lifestyle (family, housing situation, other pets, work schedule, etc.) Second, I have to respond to, or comment on, the other review (which I really never do).: It is pretty ridiculous to give a two-star rating for an adoption organization, just because they are more concerned with the well-being of the animals they take in (many of which have already been in traumatic situations) than YOUR convenience. And really, how hard is it to put a couple of personal references? If that's too much trouble, how much trouble will it be to take the cat to the vet? Buy his/her food, litter, etc.? Adopt-a-Pet does have some rules that they are sticklers for, and for good reason. So many people are so careless with pets. They need to make sure that you'll make every effort to keep your pet safe, healthy, and forever. Therefore, they want to make sure you.. -keep cats in-doors at all times (these are domesticated animals that are subject to many dangers and diseases if let outside). -have consent from your landlord, if you rent. -are not adopting the pet on a whim or as a present for someone else. -have a history of taking your pets to the vet. (if you have or have previously had pets). -have people who will vouch that you are a good person and treat animals well. If you can't meet those reasonable standards, then you probably shouldn't be taking on the responsibility of another living being. It's really that simple. Anyway, I'm not saying Adopt-a-Pet is the only good place to adopt a pet (but please DO ADOPT, not buy, your pets!), but my experiences with them have been successful and if I ever win the lotto and buy a huge mansion, I'll come back to them for at least 2 dogs and 3 more cats :) read more

This place allows people looking for applications when they have no intention of adopting pets in the south. She just needed the applications to send in for free food for her shelter. She sells them up north for $1000. She was looking for $500 for a mix breed. When questioned she stated it was for applications not adoption and she had done this thousands of times. Sent Adopt A Pet her message and received no response from them. My guess is they dont really worry about people making a buck or two. read more

This organization does a phenamonal job. They are very through in their application process and make sure adoption would be a match. It is tiring, but the opposite is that the dogs stayed at a home with a foster family and you get more information than a shelter. Wonderful organization. Dedicated people. Know a lot about dogs. Would recommend them in a heart bit anyday. We finished our adoption last week. We ended up with a wonderful shih tzu. We are truly blessed. read more

Several years after their most recent cat died a sad and premature death, my parents finally decided to get a new cat. I volunteer with a cat rescue organization where I live, and happen to be home on vacation and so was happy to help. Adopt-a-pet had a number of wonderful pictures with great descriptions of their cats on petfinder, so I looked at their main website, which is fantastic. It offers tips on adoption, terrific points to consider about adopting a cat vs. a kitten that convinced my parents to consider a young cat rather than a kitten since kittens don't have their final adult personality yet, and generally seems like the organization has the best interests of their cats in mind and will be supportive. Good sign! So I was excited to get to interact more with the organization. My mom totally fell in love with a picture of a few of their cats. Their cats seem uniquely appealing and well-described. But a picture is just a picture, as anyone who has ever done internet dating knows. I called the organization to try to meet a few of the cats so my mom could decide if she was interested, but the organization wouldn't allow us to meet the cats until I filled out the application. The woman on the phone, Linda, emphasized how important it is that I give them at least 3 personal references plus contact information of all vets that my parents have used. This is just to see cats that we might not even adopt. If it were me, I would have done it, but my parents weren't comfortable having this organization call up 3 of their friends just so they can see some cats they might not adopt. I spent at least 30 minutes filling out the application without references and then I wrote Linda an email explaining why I wasn't sending references, listing my parents' cats, how long they lived, why they died, vets' phone numbers, and said that I hoped she would let us meet the cats anyway. No dice. The 45 minutes I invested was answered with a 2 sentence email telling me to send the application to her when it was complete. We went to Treehouse, Red Door, Felines Inc, and CARE (Evanston), and spoke with a woman from another foster organization, A Caring Place, and all of them allowed us to meet their cats without calling 3 references and 2 vets. I'd recommend any of those in preference to this organization. read more

Twice I've contacted owners who want their cats adopted. with one owner I asked some questions, got only one answer. filled out adoption form to just SEE the animal (do NOt agree with this!). never got any reply from owner. Second owner--A good distance away, was in contact about driving to see cats, then decided the drive was too far. Week later contacted owner again and said i would like to see the cats. I'm probably going to sound biased because I'm a volunteer with Adopt-a-Pet, but I will tell you this-- this place genuinely cares for these animals and will go to the moon and back to ensure that the pets in their care go to their forever home. That being said, yes the adoption process takes a long time. Yes, you will be asked "personal" questions about your family dynamics, employment, living situation and references. And here's why. I have seen dogs and cats come to us with terribly sad stories of abuse, neglect and abandonment. Not all, but there's been quite a bit. We intend to adopt an animal to their FOREVER home, not to their "good for now" home. We ask about what will happen if you have a baby in the future because guess what...people dump their pets at shelters as soon as a baby comes along. People get divorced and give up a pet, and some think a dog is a lawn accessory instead of a companion. This is why the process is so strict. Many of these animals have experienced some tough times and we don't want that repeated. Not one person with Adopt-a-Pet is being paid a salary for this. We do it because we love animals and want them to have their happy ending. read more

I was writing back and forth with a foster mom about one of her dogs and she stopped answering back my emails after I told her I don't sleep with my animals at night... I didn't know that to be a good dog owner I had to sleep with my animals?? I also attempted to fill out their 8 PAGE ADOPTION APPLICATION. I understand that they want their animals going to good homes, but good God, can't you just trust humans a little bit? You can tell who some people are just by talking to them and meeting them. I feel so bad for the dogs because this rescue is narrowing out GOOD HOMES to find PERFECT HOMES. Sorry, but you wont find perfect! That's probably why the dog I was talking to the foster mom about has been with her since Sept of 2011. Poor dog just wants to go to a good home, she's not looking for perfect. DO NOT adopt from this organization !!! I adopted a shih tzu and after several incidents of myself , my son and a groomer being attacked by this dog, I was told by Randy , President of the organization , he had 'fallen through the cracks' of their system and should never have been put up for adoption. ( although, he had been with 3 other families before I took him ) According to Randy, Adopt A Pet had been told by the very first vet clinic to examine him and the Wilmette Pet shop that something was wrong with this dog and he should not be adopted. It made me VERY sad , but I knew that for the safety of my family, we could not keep him. I tried to talk to Randy, but she would not answer my calls instead, she sent me a text message !!!! asking me to take him to Golf Rose vet clinic and drop him off to be euthanized !!!! She had faxed a request to the Dr. for this to be done. I of course could not imagine leaving this poor little dog alone to be put to sleep so I stayed with him -Crying, while he died in my arms. I still think of this little dog every day - my family loved him and we should never have been put in this situation. Please do not adopt from Adopt A Pet and tell everyone you know to stay away form this organization. There are many good shelters out there - look further. read more
