The Adelaide South West Community Centre (ASWCC) is a small glass fronted building on Sturt Street in the West End of Town.
It hosts a variety of community activities including, Adult Community Education, an Immunization Clinic, a Justice of the Peace and also acts as a meeting and activity place for a diverse number of groups.
I used to live nearby and have seen a wide range of activities going on when walking past, Yoga, language groups, sewing groups and many others.
I occasionally go to the ASWCC to participate in the life drawing group, which meets every Friday. Drawing commences at 7PM and continues until about 9:30PM. There is a half time break for 20-30 mins at which complementary tea, coffee and buscuits is served. It costs $7 to participate.
The set up is quite good, a semi circle (mainly seated, but easels are permitted) around the model who is set up against a white wall. There is a small bench/bed for reclining poses. There is also usually a red satin sheet draped across the bench/bed which can be a make for a nice feature when working in colour and often introduces interesting reflected lights into the figure.
The number of people varies from week to week, although at times it can get quite packed and it becomes hard to find a place with a good view of the model. I usually try and get there a bit early so I can snag a good spot. There are no horses to rest your drawing board on so most people use the back of a chair which can get a bit cluttered.
There is quite a good lamp for lighting the figure, although members here tend to be a bit lax on the lighting front and at times the lamp will illuminate the wall rather than the figure which can be a bit annoying, especially if you are too shy/lazy to get up and move it.
The group itself is really friendly and welcoming to new participants.
In addition to the life drawing group, the ASWCC also functions as an art gallery and frequently has local work on show. read more
