Say Cheese

Whenever I mention that I frequently visit the central market I am always astounded to hear the same comment from people... "I don't go there much/at all. It's too much effort". Personally, I think this is lazy/crazy/stupid and try to get whoever I'm talking with to go there and give the markets a second chance. Going to the markets is in my family. My Mum and brothers and sister all love the markets and I sometimes bump into them there or meet up intentionally for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The stand out feature of the markets for me is all the food choices you have there. Not just stalls (I'll get to that) but also the café's, restaurants, and even some food stall in the food courts. If you have $5 or $10 for lunch or want to splash out a bit on a nice dinner, the markets has something for everyone and every budget. Starting with breakfast, there's a few main players in my book. The first is The Big Table, a small breakfast/lunch bar that's right in the markets on the gouger st side. This little place has the best brekkies in the markets in my books. Their bread is amazing and always fresh and they know how to cook great eggs any way you ask for them. They also make great coffee. For lunch I usually go to Chinatown café, a cheap but great little café that does Mee Goreng, Laksa or Hainanese Chicken Rice. Their curry chicken is also good and all meals will be on your table in 5-10 minutes from when you order and will be under $10. Across the road, down Field St you have Thanh Thanh for great Vietnamese Beef Noodle soup or Wasai for sushi and other Japanese food. Market St also has a great little café (called market st) for awesome breakfasts and coffee, and Compton st has Bliss organic café for something veggie if that's what you want. Also on Gouger St, there are restaurants galore. My favourites are Go-In Hot Pot -for hot pot, BBQ City - for duck, Ding Hao (dumplings and yum cha). East Taste -great BBC and salt and pepper tofu; Fortune Duck and Ying Chow are also favourites of many people who visit the markets. For shopping, I have a lot of experience at the markets. I think I have shopped there for my weekly food over 100 times. Probably close to 200. If you want bread, Scala bakery in the market arcade have great ciabatta, San Francisco sourdough, Rye and Olive Cobs. They have a huge range of breads and a story behind each one. For cheese we visit say cheese in the middle near the escalators and opposite that get our fruit and veg from McMahons. There's good reason these guys have earned the middle of the market position. We visit Poultry cuisine for good quality chicken and free range eggs, Jagger for dips and olives; the mushroom man for our mushrooms; and Angelakis Bro's for fish. House of Health is great for soaps, honey and healthy snacks, as is goodies and grains - which also make a killer green juice for after those difficult super early Saturday morning market sessions. For meat we visit a few places. Standom's for cold meats and sausages (the Mexican chilli bratwurst are amazing) and Marino meat and food store for great steaks. There's also a great butcher AGA meats in the arcade near Skala bakery where you can buy bulk scotch fillet for $10 a kilo. Kim Wang supermarkets is the one stop shop for everything Asian. They have Korean kimchi, Laksa ingredients, frozen dumplings, Japanese teriyaki and tempura and a whole range of sauces, oils, condiments and Asian veggies. They also have snacks with amusing names like "cream collon" and "shrimp flavoured crack" that I always want to buy until I read the crazy ingredients. There are so many more shops at the markets. I have just listed our favorites, but there are always new shops opening and being refurbished. I miss the Moroccan guy with his harissa, tagines and preserved lemons, but there are a few new places that have just opened that I'm going to take time to visit. I think everyone in Adelaide should have to visit the central market at least twice a year or get kicked out of the state. It's just too good to ignore.

My favourite truly Adelaide experience - I love this place. What better way to start your weekend than a visit to the Adelaide Central Market. First the tantalising smells assail you from the arcade or car park - spices, fragrantly indefinable Chinese cooking, ripe fruit, coffee to get you in the mood for food shopping which is never a chore. A Friday night market visit immediately relieves me of the week's workday worries and before I know it I am starving and smiling. You only have to look around you at shoppers from every country of the world to know that this is the best of who we are - right here in heart of our wonderful city. Do we Adelaideans realise how extraordinarily lucky we are to have this market literally in the heart of our city? No other major Australian city market can compare. Make this a food experiential occasion instead of an occasional experience and let each week's seasonal produce determine your upcoming culinary menus. Or go out on a limb and hit the market after 1.00pm on Saturday and take pot luck with the $1 and $2 bags - with a little bit of imagination and creativity you will eat like a king or queen for days. I defy anyone who says you can't eat healthy on a budget to shop here at 2.00pm on Saturday. I'm sure we all have our favourite stalls for cheese, coffee, smallgoods, meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, bread, olives, pasta, nuts, chocolate, lollies, health foods, honey, eating etc etc. All stall owners are passionate about what they do, source and sell -it's inspiring. Hey you can buy absolutely everything here on your weekly shopping list - you don't need to go anywhere else. Don't save a visit until your next interstate or overseas guests stay - go today - now, right now. Just eat it!!

Oooh kooky looky abandoned art lucky me!!

Only four star because not enough organic produce! But otherwise a brilliant selection of all food stuffs under one roof! Plenty of lunch options too so you don't get bored! Free car parking if you get it all in in under one hour! Awesome shopping

Well, there are some of us that do all of our shopping at the local supermarket, and some of us that go out on a limb and do all of our shopping at the markets. I have to admit that I tend to be of the first variety, since I tend to want to spend as short a time as possible doing my weekly shopping. However you simply can't beat the farmer's market for style, and the Central Markets are the largest in Adelaide. Mind you, they aren't always open, but if you do go down on the days that it is you simply cannot beat the atmosphere of the place. One cool thing I found here once was a butcher that sold exotic meat, which is something you won't find in your local supermarket.

A great place to take tourists! I took my great aunt from Canada here on a Saturday morning in the middle of the Fringe Festival - what an absolute hub of atmosphere. We stopped by Global World where she bought some really unique Adelaide made and designed haram style pants for the family back in Canada. After wandering amongst the different style food stores ranging from organic fruits, lovely smelling coffee beans, delicious cheeses and a classic Lolly shop - not to mention multiple cafes, bakeries and a pop up book store; we bought some smoked trout from a South Australian trout farm stall and some potato and rosemary bread from a bakery (amongst much more food than we could ever eat. Our glass of wine that evening was paired with the sumptuous taste of the vacuum packed trout and aromatic bread. Definitely an experience for anyone who loves their foods, a bit of hubbub and the smells and sounds so classic to a market including the freshly baked breads and the sounds of fruit vendors calling out their wares - not to mention multiple people out for a bit of atmosphere and a good bargain.

Beautiful Selection Of Fresh Flowers

The Adelaide Central Markets make me proud to be South Australian. So many wonderful, local, delicious, divine and creative products all under one roof. There is always something new to discover and enjoy, no matter how often you visit. Beautiful produce for "make at home" and so many homemade style "take away" options to choose from. There is high end and there is budget. Whatever your eating and drinking need,s you can get it here.

Bright, firm, and delicious persimmons

Actual epitome of what produce and specialty foods should look like. I am an American and I say the food here is HUGE. I've never seen bigger melons or smelled stinkier cheeses (in a really good way) and seen so many colorful fruits. Australian produce is the BEST and I wish I could live here just so I could buy food from here every week. Also, this is the cleanest market I've ever seen. No other farmer's market or grocery can even come close to the quality and cleanliness of the food here. Not to mention, every produce you can imagine you can get here at a fair price. Highly recommend for any tourist who's visiting South Australia. Don't limit yourself to just the fruit, get the meats, cheeses, and other speciality foods you can get your hands on, too!

Dumpling vegetable soup with chilli oil added (optional)

My favourite dumpling eatery. They always taste fresh and are made on site. I really enjoy the dumplings on a plate of the dumpling vegetable soup. If you have a sweet tooth you also can't go past their crepes.

Located in the heart of the city, Adelaide Central Markets are a unique and wonderful thing. Full of fresh produce stores, butchers, bakers, small restaurants and cafes, fishmongers, florists, gourmet foods and plenty of lettuce leaves on the ground - the Markets are a feast for your senses. I often wander in, look around for ages, grab my self some lunch at Lucia's or Asian Gourmet, taste test a chocolate coated coffee bean, give myself a shot of melted chocolate and then start buying my fresh groceries for the week. The only problem with this place is its overwhelming options of which vendor to choose from. This also means cheap cheap prices as they are all competing with one another. Not only fresh produce and things for your weekly shop - if you're looking for something to impress guests at a dinner party, the markets have wonderful gourmet ideas for dips, desserts and cheese platters. A wonderful way to support SA whilst enjoying wonderful multiculturalism.

There's nothing quite like the Central Market. It's the smells of spices, cooking food, and fresh breads, or the free tastings and exotic fruits that all help make this one of Adelaide's best attractions. I come here so often, even when I'm just browsing, because I just love seeing what there is to often. Often I'll come home with a small bag filled with goodies from the Asian grocers, some tasty cheeses, bagels, or even some exotic fruit. I do get a little overwhelmed at times, there is just so much stuff, and I don't know which store I should be buying from or where I'll get the best deal. Saying this, there are market tours that give you a detailed look at the markets, I just haven't tried one yet.

Adelaide's Central Market is one of a kind. It has an intimate feeling, housed in an enormous warehouse, and the food here is fantastic. I come here for two reasons - fresh produce, and immediate gratification. My favourite shop is "Dough..." as their pastries are delicious, especially the pear and apple danishes, which are made in the shape of the fruit. Next door to "Dough..." is "Say Cheese", which on a Saturday will be doing free tastings. The girl doling out the cheese is friendly and more than happy to let you try everything... which I invariably do. It's a great way to get to know what they sell and to try cheeses you may not have otherwise tasted. For Brunch, Zuma's is a great spot. They do delicious all day breakfasts, and a good coffee. The beauty of this place is that you really can't go wrong. Anywhere you buy it, the food will be delicious and good quality, as it has to be to match the nearby competition. I particularly recommend Tuesday afternoons, as all the fruit and veg will be heavily discounted. Go at around 4pm and everything will be disappearing fast. The same happens around closing time on Saturday, since the markets will be shut for two days, however at this time it gets completely crazy.

Firstly, the logistics: Meeting at 2:30pm was a great time of day to start the tour, meant the weather was nice and sunny for the 2.5 hour duration, and our tour guide, Karen, was friendly, knowledgeable and fun. The walk was a bit strange at first as I knew the area of Gouger Street quite well and noticed we did a full circle to our original starting point before moving on again to the second dumpling point, however perhaps this is to accommodate the street art aspect of the tour. Secondly, the street art: Karen definitely knew her stuff! All these amazing works of art that I hadn't previously noticed, or knew much about, became so much more interesting with a little background knowledge. For example, there were some little themed tiles left above street signs on brick walls, I had never seen them before! Such an eye-opener of a tour in regards to the skills of these amazing artists. Thirdly, the dumplings: The first dumpling option completely shook up everything I thought I knew about dumplings (turns out it just means filling surrounded by some sort of pastry, what a fool I was). The Russian Piroshki was delicious, involving a savoury donut dough with a warm filling, such as potato and leek or spinach and feta. Moving on, the second option was Japanese Gyoza, a fried meaty dumpling that I have eaten many times and wasn't disappointed with! The third option was two large plates of Steamed and Fried Chinese pork and cabbage dumplings. This serving really filled us up, even with the walk to the next venue. Luckily Karen informed us that at the Vietnamese venue we could choose to try the steamed buns or a Viet iced coffee if we were too full. I was told that the steamed buns were great, but I was definitely happy with my sweet iced caffeine! All in all, a good time and recommended if you want to try something different!

You will not go hungry and the walking in between venues permits digestion. Accompanying the dumpling education was an education on street art. It was interesting but I'm not sure about the fit between the two. Also, at some street art venues, it was difficult to hear our tour leader. I love the concept of doing a tour in your hometown - a staycation- and it is good value for money. I'd recommend it to others, particularly if you are a fan of street art

The new Central Bus Station has been there for a few years but looks so much nicer than the sad looking building next door that was its former residences. The building is light and airy and there is plenty of seating room while you wait. There is big row of customer service people who can help with your questions and a little café to purchase magazines or food for the trip. There are nice toilet facilities and a freight area where you can pick up packages sent up on the buses. A definite improvement on what used to be there before, although there is still not great parking which becomes a pain.

So we try to do something nice and pick a 4 or preferably 5 star hotel to stay in. We hadn't stayed at The Hilton before and it was more expensive than other similar hotels, but with the Hilton brand we expected it to be really good. We spent a similar amount on a King deluxe room as we could have got a nicer room elsewhere (eg: small suite). We got breakfast as well. What was nice. The room was clean with stickers everywhere saying it had been 'Covid cleaned'. The bed was comfy. Temperature control was good and water pressure was great. Concierge were nice and friendly. Took a while for the Honors app digital key to kick in, but that was a nice touch. And when a room a couple of doors down stated playing music so loud it was thumping through ours, they were quick to come up and handle the situation. What could have been better. No robes - we had to call down and they supplied them within 10 minutes with many apologies. No top sheet on the bed. Again, a call downstairs and they fixed that too. Less than one roll of toilet paper supplied - glad we didn't run out, though came close. Room service stops at 10pm - seems a little early for a 5 star hotel. And if we did want anything, well $8.50 for a bottle of water? (There's no mini-bar due to Covid, so room service is your only option if you need something). Their online info says we can use our own subscriptions for Apple TV, Netflix etc but we couldn't find instructions on the TV as stated and by that stage, we were just a little over the whole thing so didn't bother calling for assistance. I'm tech savvy and if I need help to get that working, I wonder how others might fare. And it's a little thing, but I expect the toilet roll holder in a 5 star hotel to be complete, but half of it was missing. It just looks shabby and dated, as if they don't worry much about maintenance. And that's probably a statement of the place as a whole - it's clean, but dated. Breakfast was just a let down. It was obvious they'd been cooking food for a while, as the bacon was dry and chewy, but they hadn't put the tags out to state what was under each of the cloches. And when I came to use the toaster, one of the staff wiped down the knobs and in so doing turned the setting up to charcoal (I think technically it was "dark", but the result was the same). Coffee was served in individual plungers, but they didn't put anywhere near enough coffee in, so the result was so weak it was almost tasteless. And then for some reason they supplied the milk in another coffee mug, so trying to pour inevitably resulted in a pool of milk on the table. These are little things - but they just suggest they're not prepared for their guests. You might excuse one, but after half a dozen issues it's just not 5 star quality. Finally, the parking is a 5 minute walk away and with Covid, no valet service - fair enough. They offered a ticket for a local car park for $25. We declined but ending up parking in the same car park. We paid $8 instead. That's just a rip-off. Summary Charges like a 5 star hotel, but misses the mark. Promised much but delivered little. We won't be back.

Are you interested in learning about South Australian history? Do you just like boats? If you like…read moreone of the above mentioned, you will like the tour of The Clipper. What an amazing ship! It took a long time, a lot of dedicated people and a whole lot of money to get her back to Australia from Scotland. So, it's worth going to have a look. The ship was used to take the first colonist from England to South Australia. It could fit up to 300 people onboard and was one of the fastest ships to get you here. It was like a jet of ships. I wont tell you anymore of the history side of things, you can learn more about it when you go on the tour. It is a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. Good headroom inside of the cabin areas as well. Especially in comparison to other ships I have been on. So, I think that passengers had it pretty good on this ship. What is truly amazing is looking at the construction of the ship. All the materials, design and hard work to make it such a solid structure. No wonder it lasted so long. Take note of what the tour guide tells you when s/he explains the materials and processes. What I really do want to say about The Clipper is that you have to admire the hard work of all of the volunteers in looking after this girl and restoring her. It is so important for us to learn about how Australia came to be what it is today. And this is just one part. It is truly a piece of history that I hope continues to survive for generations to admire and day dream about. What was it like travelling on this vessel to a new unknown land? One thing is for sure, the people that travelled on this boat were really brave!
