Driving down Roundhay Road there would have to be something distinctive to stand out from all the…read moreother Take-away places contributing to light pollution on such a scale it would rival the Blackpool lights! Out steps Shai Nan Kebab! I have been coming here for Kebabs and take aways for at least 6 years and have never been dissapointed. Sadly, last year it was closed for a spell after a fire destroyed most of the inside yet the new place is bigger and better than ever. Most of the skewered kebabs are kept in the chiller fridge for you to salivate over, as well as a great selection of Pakoras/samosa/bahji's. There is nothing done to any of this food in secret- the kitchen is all open plan as well as the prep area so you can see the cleanliness of the food/utensils/staff/prep areas. The skewered kebabs are cooked fresh to order in the tandor so there is a bit of waiting for your order but hey, who doesn't appreciate a wait when you can get to see the life-cycle of the food you are going to eat. The chapatis/rotis/naans are all freshly rolled and cooked to order so again, no 'kept' food. The menu is quite accomodating for most tastes- kebabs/curries/chicken/burgers/fish/chicken portions and then a new selection of desserts and ice cream shakes. Personally, we usually go for the 'Shai Nan Special kebab' which @ £7.50 offers chicken, lamb, shish.donner and masses of salad all wrapped in a freshly griddled naan with lashings of chilli and yoghurt sauce! Definitely one to open the top button of the jeans for! The Mr and i popped by here Sunday eve and got a Lamb tikka naan and I just had a craving for the donner meat and chips- absolutely spot on for both. Even after a 20 min wait we were still happy. Like i said, there are a lot of Take away shops on this shopping parade yet I've never considered trying any of the others as Shai Nan has never let me down and with the regular staff, open-plan kitchen & prep area and a great reputation I can quite justify driving out of my way to go here as I'm guarenteed to get exactly what I want-without fail!

Like Pizza Affair a few doors up, Station Pizza is another rather dodgy takeaway joint on Station…read moreRoad. Though it identifies itself as a pizza place, it is really more of a curry takeaway, offering a massive selection of Indian meals along with the usually pizza/burger/kebab fare. I've only had a curry from here once and it was enough to put me off for life - a bit watery and hotter than I had asked for it, it did not sit easily in my stomach. On the plus-side, my friend had a pizza and it was actually pretty good (I had a slice because I was so sick of my curry that I couldn't eat any more of it). Maybe they should just, as their name suggests, stick to pizzas.

Pizzas are easier to get away with, you normally get what you expect, and all there is to moan about is if it is too crispy or floppy, two things that depend on personal preference.. A curry is harder to get right. Whether the ingredients are fresh or ground, the right ammount of each spice can be the difference between a masala and a phall! Station Pizza's pizza was fine, a peperoni pizza inseperable from any other samey-samey fast food joint: both satisfying and bloating. The curry on the other hand, was very average. The lack of fresh ingredients you'd hope for, but ultimately not really expect were predictably absent, the sauce tasted of nothing but a chefs over-zealous arm tipping in the curry powder. I agree with Alex, stick to the pizzas.
