No outside alcohol allowed in. $10 cover. The atmosphere was a small mosh pit flanked by old furniture and televisions with some art available for purchase. The acoustics were good though. If we had been better prepared, might have been a great night instead of mediocre. Upon inspecting the place further, I started to get the concept they were going for ... an open artists' space. Sometimes they serve coffee in the back, but it's not coffee-shop coffee. I think they may even serve food (if there's an art opening). In any event, their BYOB policy assures instant satisfaction. Art, old sheet music, a piano harp and musical instruments line the walls. There's a coffee table made from an old piano keyboard too. This along with the thrifty-nature of the furnishings provides a slightly off-key, nourishing vibe for local musicians and bards. Every performance is live-streamed (via U-Stream) online, which is awesome. I can't think of any other Metro Detroit (or A2) venue that does this. That earns 'em the extra star. For your more untraditional, experimental and low-fi bands/performers, this place is a boon!

My daughter particularly enjoys the stuffed toys and puppets. I enjoy the atmosphere and fun crowd. The music is great and so is the food. They have one of the best funnel cake trucks with amazing fried Oreos, sooo good!!! Treat Dreams has an ice cream truck with their famous flavors. The ice cream cookies are the absolute best!!! They have an eclectic variety of food trucks that look and smell mouthwatering. But they could use more seating, it's very limited compared to the amount of people eating the goodies. I love the adult beverages available to purchase through tickets. They have a ginormous variety of beer and mixed drinks, plus some of the money goes toward different charities and good causes. It's ten tickets for $20, but this year I noticed you may purchase individual tickets. I prefer this option! Tickets are $2 a piece, so most beers cost around $6 or three tickets. I got the Griffinclaw pumpkin beer. It was amazing! Very pumpkin forward with a nice spice aftertaste. Most of the mixed drinks are between three and four tickets, cheaper than most bars. I've even seen some for two tickets. The parking can be challenging. We were able to find a good spot and only paid $3.00. But I wonder if it gets more challenging in the evening hours. I bet this a fun time at night. This is a great event when paired with the Funky Ferndale fair. I look forward to next year.

The Royal Oak…read moreMusic Theatre is a long-standing pillar within the community, located just a few blocks off of Main Street in downtown Royal Oak. This theatre is a great, smaller-scale theatre that will attract lower key artists and concerts than those that would come to Detroit. I would equate the Royal Oak Music Theatre to a step down from The Fillmore in Detroit, but also a step up from St. Andrew's Hall also in Detroit. The Royal Oak Music Theatre certainly has not gone through any noticeable updates throughout the years it has been in business, which seems like several several decades now. So it definitely shows signs of wear and just feels a tad outdated, but not quite rundown. But it's still such a solid venue and is in a much better, less trafficked city than Detroit that allows coming and going to and from shows here a lot less of a headache. There is tons of parking options surrounding the theatre in the parking lots throughout downtown Royal Oak and on the side street parking as well. There are also a ton of delicious restaurants and bars easily within walking distance for you to grab a bite or a drink before and after your show, along with doing some shopping as well! It's truly a delightful experience every time I come to Royal Oak Music Theatre!

We started out with Happy Hour at The Fillmore Detroit Bar for food and a refreshing drink. The bar is the former State Bar. It is a cool place to chill and the service was very quick. I had a Watermelon Lemonade Riffresher, chicken tenders and fries. It was an excellent venue for us to hear from author Kamala Harris to talk about her new book, 107 Days. She was delivering a message on her short road to the presidential campaign and the state of affairs today that have many U. S. Citizens feeling emotionally hijacked....but I digress. This was a great opportunity to experience in such a beautiful venue. It truly reminded me of a more intimate Fox Theatre.

Beautifully decorated in the main space with gorgeous art on the walls and ceiling. Getting into the building was another story. Extremely long security lines, lots of steep stairs and semi clean bathrooms. I do understand this is a 100 year old building but some of it felt unsafe. I was seated in the upper balcony which made it hard to hear at times and difficult to see the main stage. There was a wide variety of drink options and food as well. Had a pretty good deal for popcorn and a drink for $10. The facility did its job but there are definitely room for improvements!
