The appointment scheduling system was a breeze and very user friendly. I saved a bunch of time uploading my Driver's License, Insurance Card and filling out all my information. I received text and email updates. I arrived 30 minutes before my appointment and the receptionist was friendly and checked me in, even though there was a QR code to scan for self-check. The waiting room was 75% full, so I opted to sit near the door one seat away from other patients on either side. While waiting there was a steady flow of patients coming and going. What I disliked was when a new patient sat right next to me when there was a row of three empty seats. I feel like it's just good manners to sit far apart when possible. Nurse Ashley took me back to check my vitals 8 minutes after my schedule appointment. Instead of measuring my height and weight she asked me. She did take my blood pressure, pulse and temperature. She brought me back to wait in a treatment room. After 15-20 minutes she came back to inform me that I will be seen by a provider shortly and thank you for waiting. I made myself comfy in the armchair. It was probably another 30 minutes before Dr. MacKenzie came in. She asked a few questions, took a look at me, gave me her diagnosis but wanted a second opinion and asked me to wait a little longer. Another doctor came in, asked some questions, looked at me and felt my eyes, gave the same diagnosis and departed. Dr. MacKenzie explained the diagnosis, prescribed a steroid, antihistamine and topic ointment. These were all ready for me before I arrived at my preferred pharmacy. What I appreciated the most was her level of care. I respected that she took time to get a second opinion and thoroughly explained everything to me and answered all my questions. While it's never fun to go to the hospital, she eased my anxiety for sure. I highly recommend this location for urgent care needs and hope that you are lucky to get Dr. MacKenzie.

I've been having trouble with my eyes while out of town (really scary symptoms) so I saw an out of network optometrist where I'm staying because the price was right and I needed answers. She did a full exam, updated my glasses prescription, and gave me a letter of referral since there were a couple of issues she spotted that were beyond her scope. So I called the Hillcrest clinic, explained that I had exam findings plus a letter of referral from a licensed optometrist, and needed to see an ophthalmologist. I was transferred to the vision clinic in El Cajon. There, I was told I had to see one of THEIR optometrists, even though I saw an out of network one last week. They would need to do an exam again before I could see an ophthalmologist. Why? I have full exam records. You read that right: I'd need to see an optometrist again, even though I saw one last week and have the records and letter of referral in hand. Who has that kind of time or tolerance for that level of BS? This isn't shade on Hillcrest clinic, it's shade on the Family Health Center system in general. Why would they have someone jump through so many hoops? Money. Someone somewhere is getting paid. Not the doctors, but administrators who create the policies. Otherwise, they'd accept the referral letter and exam notes from the fully licensed out of network optometrist and allow me to see an ophthalmologist in network since I will be back in town then. Completely and utterly ridiculous. Avoid these centers if you can. Too many barriers to getting care quickly when you need it. We finally had to leave because we had somewhere to be. From the moment we walked into this clinic, the difference was immediate. The staff was kind, respectful, and efficient. No attitude, no chaos, just people who clearly care. My son usually hates going to the doctor, but they made the whole experience quick and easy for him. We were in and out (including getting his prescription filled at the pharmacy) in under 30 minutes. I don't know if it was perfect timing or just how well they run things, but either way--I won't forget how well we were treated. Highly recommend!
