Why has every review here missed the best part of Adams Park? PICK UP BASKETBALL!
Adams Park has, hands down, the best outdoor pick up basketball in all of Austin. I've heard the games at UT's Gregory are good, but it also costs $50/month to get in the door. The price at Adams park? Free, if you can stomach the 100 degree weather, the even hotter water at the drinking fountain, and the occasional panicky sprint to save a basketball from the Waller Creek ravine. And if you can't then you're probably not gonna last long on any court anyhow.
The Adams court is huge, bigger than the Pease Park mini-court, and has bright fluorescent lights that come on around 8 in the summer, though ironically when most games wrap up. The talent is consistently competitive, mainly early to mid 20's white boys, which means friendly, fundamental games without many wow moments but also lacking the shit talking, cheap shit attitudes that can make most pickup courts worthless (don't even get me started on the scum playing ball at Silver Lake Park back home in LA). Oh and stick around long enough and you might get to play a game with the boys from Austin Fire Dept's Station #3.
Right around the corner from Spider House, Adams Park is a great relief from the schizophrenically small business oriented yet nontheless all out pedestrian abuse that is Guadalupe north of 24th street. Once at Adams Park, continue north across 30th street up the linear park on either side of Waller Creek for a nice stroll into the south edge of Hyde Park. You can also take the park all the way east where two footbridges cross Waller Creek and the trail winds behind a seminary towards Crown and Anchor Pub at the intersection of San Jacinto and Speedway.
The west edges of the park attract a classic Steinbeckian sample of Austin's houseless vagabonds and many an early morning I've seen folks of all types rolling up sleeping bags after what I can only assume was a great night of urban camping in a quintessentially Austin spot. read more
