Ultimately being told they had an oops, my choices are making another appointment, which is a month out, and do the whole thing all over again OR try to renew online and pay the fee again. Had a surprisingly expeditious experience here…read more Going to the DMV is never fun and with the new Real ID requirements, we're going to find ourselves there more often. Tip: Make an appointment at least 2 months before your Drivers License expires! You will need to do your renewal in person to get a new photo (required for the new "Real ID"). Tip: Park on the West side of the Department of Revenue Building. That is where the DMV entrance is. I walked in just before my appointment time, gave the person at the check in counter my name, got a number and walked into the DMV to wait. There were only a handful of people waiting and plenty of seating. The building is pretty run down and if you are concerned about cleanliness, you may want to stand or BYO wipes for the plastic chairs. To my surprise, as soon as I walked in, my number was called along with the kiosk to report to. That was great. I didn't even have time to sit down. When you make your appointment online, there is a form with all kinds of information they want you to bring with you to confirm your identity and address (like a paystub, utility bill, etc.). It turns out, they don't actually need any of that if your DL hasn't expired yet and your address has not changed. They confirmed my information and sent me to get my photo taken. I only had to wait for one person ahead of me to get their photo taken. DMV photos are never flattering, but at least I got through it quickly. Unfortunately, at that point, they punch a hole in your ID and hand it back to you with a piece of paper saying your ID is not valid without the paper and that your new ID won't be mailed to you for ~30 days. I do not understand why they cannot print them onsite. So, this will be a PITA for the next month while I wait. However, within a couple of hours, my digital ID on the MyColorado App updated with the new expiration date. So, at least I can use that here in CO.

America isn't perfect. We've done some dark things. One of them was "Executive Order 9066" which…read morewas issued by Franklin D. Roosevelt and it resulted in the rounding up and imprisonment of thousands of American citizens of Japanese ancestry in fear after the attack on Pearl Harbor, thinking that these citizens might be saboteurs who might fight America domestically. No charges were filed - just suspicion based on ancestry. Terrible and a blatant Constitutional violation. The National Japanese American Memorial in Washington acknowledges the action https://www.yelp.com/biz/national-japanese-american-memorial-washington?hrid=4uh42K5UAouKsFpHVn1Pkw. Apologies have been issued and reparations made, but that doesn't right the wrong. One person who stood against the action was Colorado governor Ralph Carr. While he objected to denying the rights of these American citizens, he accepted the establishment of a concentration camp in Colorado (Granada Relocation Center) to assure that they would be treated with respect. It cost him his career in government, losing the 1942 Senate election. He died in 1950. In 1999, the Denver Post named Carr its "Person of the Century." In 1976, this bust of Carr was erected here in Sakura Square to commemorate his efforts on behalf of Japanese-Americans. It includes one of his quotes on the plaque, "When it is suggested that American citizens be thrown into concentration camps, where they lose all the privileges of citizenship under the Constitution, then the principles of that great document are violated and lost." But on second thought, Commerce City has an interesting appeal, well at least in the sort of heavy industrial distopia way.... Thanks to Suncore and extremely cheap housing and real estate, Commerce City has become a sort of Mecca of industry meets meth users meets grey hound gambling megalopolis. But before I continue, there truly is something beautiful about seeing an artificial red sunset with the ever-burning flame in the background of Suncore's oil refinery, or about seeing the night illuminated with the green and yellow lights of poisonous progress. But the typical view of Commerce City is factories and houses that could very well be plagued with a high crime rate and drug trafficking. Just saying. I guess that is one positive way of looking at Commerce City.
