Worst rental car experience ever. They tried to charge us $1,500 for a small scratch to the car …read more.. two weeks after our rental return, we were sent a demand notice for the money along with a small, blurry photo of a scratch no more than 3/4 inch long. We ignored it because we looked over the car when we dropped it off with the agent and there were no new scratches on the car that weren't there before. There were plenty of small scratches and dings on the car when we picked it up. Do your research on travel forums. Lots of posters from the US are charged preposterous amounts for small paint 'damage' weeks after returning home. The demand notices kept coming and they said that they would put a lean on our credit history if we didn't pay them. We kept trying to call Sixt ... the US office said we had to call the European office. Emails were exchanged and they would only write back to us in German. It seemed we were getting nowhere in being able to contact someone. Finally, we had a relative who is a lawyer step in and draft a response for us. The next day, Sixt wrote us to say they were waiving the charge. We did not buy their insurance because it was and extra $40/day and our credit card company has rental insurance. It was pretty clear based on a lot of the comments I am reading online that if you are from the US renting at Sixt in Europe and waive their insurance, there's a good chance they'll claim you owe hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a small ding or a small scratch. Beyond that, the car they gave us had the coolant light come on after 3 days. We called their customer service and they were able to give us little help or advice. Luckily, I speak a little French and we were able to find someone in the town we were staying in who could assist us in finding the correct coolant to add. There were 4 different colors of coolant and the manual was unclear which to use. It was stated damage could occur if the wrong one was used. The people at the rental counter were not very helpful at all and gave us a giant gas-guzzling SUV from a brand we had never heard of even though we rented a sedan, which was supposed to include brands like Mercedes or BMW. We told them that we would be driving many miles but they said it was either that or a very basic downgraded car. Overall, we would never recommend renting from Sixt ... nothing but problems and in my opinion, they tried to scam us into paying $1,500 for a very minor scratch which we believe was not caused by us. Do your homework and read their complaint site posts before using them.

If I could give it zero stars, I would. Save yourself the hassle of dealing with their unfair…read morebusiness practices and take your business elsewhere. They want to charge us more than $300 for a small scratch on one of the rims which they claim was a "damage" that occurred during our rental period but that can only be described as ordinary wear and tear. When you pick up the car, they leave it up to you to do an inspection and to report any "damages" to them. Which means you have to figure out whether or not any particular scratch/dent should be put on the list. They also don't tell you what they mean by "damages". Probably for a good reason so they can get you later. When you return the vehicle, it's no longer up to you to do the report, but it is a company representative who inspects the car and all the sudden discovers all the "damages" that allegedly occurred during the rental period. They then send you a repair bill that shows a random (and probably inflated) price to fix the "damages". After doing some research on the issue, it appears that this is a common practice and we're not the only customers that are victims of their scheme. I would urge you to read all the reviews before you rent a car from Sixt. I personally will never rent a car from them ever again. It is not worth the hassle and I've already spent too much valuable time arguing with them over what can only be described as a scheme to extract additional money from customers (in particular those who don't buy the insurance they are offering for $40 per day). As others have said, do your homework and pay particular attention to their complaint site posts before using them.

Europcar - The "damage" they are charging me for is a tiny scratch less than one inch long. 100% scam.

Then, I drove the car for 48 hrs and never once parallel parked the vehicle and I did not hit anything, not even one curb m the car was in the same exact condition as when I rented it. However, the valet guy at the pickup claimed I damaged the hubcap with a tiny scratch less than one inch that you could barely even see. When I refused and explained that I didn't do that, he told me I was liable. He then told me to stand in a line that was over an hour at the counter if I wanted to contest it. This is 100% a scam as they know customers can't stand in long lines and wait when they are catching flights at the airport. Luckily, I was very early so I waited, and also got on the phone with my insurance immediately. The person at the counter was not helpful at all and told me they will be charging me for this extremely minor regular wear and tear on the vehicle that I did not damage myself. I am fighting this with my insurance now and I will write reviews on every platform I can to warm others to never use this company. I have included a photo of the "damage".

They slapped on a cross-border fee and a premium station surcharge even though I had already paid what was required when I booked. Then at drop-off, they claimed there were scratches on the car. Funny thing is -- when I picked it up, there was no damage report provided at all. The car was parked in a ridiculously tight garage, and they apparently expect customers to crawl around inspecting every inch, then go all the way back to the desk to argue about it. Completely unrealistic. When I contacted customer service, they were no help at all. Basically, their attitude was "too bad, you should've caught it." No accountability, no fairness, nothing. Bottom line: Europcar will nickel and dime you, tack on hidden fees, and then blame you for damage you didn't cause. Out of all the rental companies I've used, this was hands down the worst experience I've ever had. Definitely recommend to go to Alamo or any other rental car business
