I just completed the 10 week Sitcom Essentials class, and it's really quite true that nothing else like this is offered in town. While taking improv at UCB/Groundlings/etc. is great, if you really are looking to be a comedy master on Film and Television, this studio is what you need to set your sights on. The owners Gunnar and Lauren are very knowledgable and create a positive and exciting atmosphere. There was no intimidation or judgement which is so great! In this particular class we covered everything from script analysis to differences between multi cam and single cam to representation and how the market sees you. You also get partnered up and perform a multi cam scene in front of an audience with three cameras rolling and writers on the side who are giving you joke rewrites. No other place I know of gives you this experience, and I think it is important because if you're getting sent out for multi cam show auditions and have never been on one, you want to be as prepared as possible for how everything runs. The community at the studio was warm and friendly from the teachers and guests to the students. At the end of the day, Gunnar and Lauren want to help actors and it shows. I have been studying at the Actor's Comedy Studio for 9 months now and cannot see myself taking classes elsewhere. Not only is Todd incredibly observant and knowledgeable, but he represents your biggest motivator and fan in a town where true supporters are hard to come by. The Actor's Comedy Studio is one of the best classes in town, hands down. Todd is a wonderful teacher who is also a working professional actor, and is very honest with his acting notes and suggestions. The Actor's Comedy Studio is the only class I've taken so far that is devoted to sitcom acting - all of you actors out there that want to be on TV, this class is a must! There is never a wasted minute in class at ACS...all of the classes are well structured so that every actor/actress gets to perform 2-3 times EVERY CLASS and every performance is recorded to be reviewed at the end of the night! Getting to perform, get notes and then review my own performance has helped me get more comfortable in front of the camera and learn where I need to trim bad habits and become more expressive. I took the Comedy Cast Intensive with Todd Rohrbacher and Casting Director Dorian Frankel at the end of 2012, and to say I was impressed was an understatement. It wasn't too far in to the intensive I realized, "These people are on to something special...". Todd has studied TV Sitcoms, as well as the rest of the Industry, and has broken it down to a science. I immediately got myself into on-going classes, and after 5 months of training at ACS, I continued to be impressed with the amount of information Todd offers in every class. I cannot recommend the Acting For Sitcoms class at ACS ENOUGH. Gunnar has an unparalleled passion for and understanding of comedy. At the beginning of each class he gives a brief but always amusing update on the current events in the industry, knowing that as actors it is imperative we are kept informed and on our toes and therefore empowered when it comes to taking the reins in our careers and steering in the right direction. He knows what's up and stays current. Class is made up of actors from pretty diverse backgrounds, from actors who just want to loosen up and be more comfortable with comedy to stand-up comedians looking to branch out and get some solid technique for translating their personas to on-camera work. And every class, they all progress. You will see it. Each week is a chance to improve your cold-reading skills and audition technique, learn to nail taking direction, and watch your second take on playback at the end of the night. The cost of class here is crazy low and as other people have mentioned ACS offers legit $20 casting director workshops and endless networking opportunities through its Facebook group and well, the other 15 or so working actors in class every night being encouraged to self-produce and just plain make-it-happen. I'm only half-kidding when I say Gunnar is the Dumbledore of comedy. He can take any muggle struggling with finding the funny and with the right combination of spells turn them into a competent comedy wizard. Do yourself a favor, Accio your cellphone, conjure up an orientation meeting with Gunnar, and you'll find your patronus has mysteriously changed to a whimsical, bespectacled little man charging down dementors while giggling and bellowing out, "Hello, everybody!" read more

To take class here you have to pay for a series of 6 classes with a deposit for one extra class. I thought that was a bit strange, but proceeded to take the classes. Lauren was my teacher and she was great. I took the on-camera audition technique class and we did a lot of cold reads that we would then film and review, it was extremely helpful. Twice I had a sub, who was also very sweet, but focused more on acting techniques and during those classes we never filmed our scenes or saw ourselves on camera, which was a slightly disappointing. For my last class, I had a family emergency and had to miss class, since everything happened so quickly, I wasn't able to tell ACS until after I had missed the class. I explained to them what had happened, and expressed that I would like to make up my last class the next week. They said no, that since I had not informed them I would be missing, I lost my deposit and could not take my last class. I sent a follow up email expressing my disappointment and hopes that I could still get my money's worth and take the final class, it was ignored. As much as I enjoyed Lauren and her techniques, I would never recommend ACS because of how poorly I was treated. I paid a lot of money to take those classes, and for each other class I was on time and fully attentive, I wish they could have been more understanding of my situation and let me make-up my final class or give me my deposit back. I felt I was treated coldly, and that's not the atmosphere you want when finding an acting studio. read more

I just finished taking the Sitcom Essentials 8 week course and it blew my mind how amazing the course is. First of all, the teachers who taught the different classes are all very passionate, knowledgeable, giving, encouraging and supportive. There were performers from all levels: from just starting out to seasoned professionals. And the teachers made it challenging, fresh and interesting for all above. The amount of information I was able to walk away with from the course is mind blowing. I learned about the different comedy character archetypes, how to breakdown a comedy script (so huge :) ), improv techniques to keep the scene fresh, what happens during auditions from the pre read to network testing and booking a series regular, what adjustments I need to make to create a single camera and multi-camera performance and what a casting director is looking for in pictures and in your auditions. Oh and let me not forget to mention the live performance. Each performer was paired up and given a different scene unique to what they would be cast for in the field. And we worked on the scene during the course of the time and performed it in front of an audience with three different cameras going....multi-camera sitcom style. Even though I've had previous experience of performing on multi-camera tv shows, I still learned a lot.....things I wish I learned before. I came away from this course confident about who I am as a performer and what my strengths and weaknesses are. I am so glad I took this course. Actor's Comedy Studio is creative and innovative in the way they teach their classes. They are passionate and serious about what they do. I just completed the 10 week long Sitcom Essentials Class and I feel it has been money and time well spent. Gunnar and Lauren, the two co-founders as well as teachers, share a great depth of knowledge between them and are extremely eager to share. They maintain a friendly atmosphere, and you can tell both get a lot out of sharing their knowledge with the students, which I feel is extremely important. As for the course material, it covers the gamut, with equal parts lecture and practical exercise. You will learn script analysis, character archetypes, and have guest speakers who are working professionals explain different aspects of the industry (agents and managers/working actor). Also included is a live taping with three cameras and a writing staff to simulate working on a sitcom, and it is an eye opening and educational experience, after which you will have a nice clip of your comedy experience at work. To be fair, this is not an in depth exploration of any of the individual components, but a highly useful overview, and our class consisted of both beginner and advanced actors, all of whom seemed to get something out of the class. As you can tell, I was extremely pleased with the information I gained throughout the classes, as well as the people I worked with and met. I've taken other acting courses and improv classes, but if you are looking for a great over view of sitcoms and comedic acting, then this is the class for you. I've been attending Todd's classes for about 6 months and it has honestly been one of the most wonderful class experiences I've had as an actor, anywhere. He seems to hit the nail right on the head week to week with our discussions on the business and current events. A few months ago, I got a last minute audition for a very popular web series. The script wasn't available ahead of time, so I knew that I would have to work hard and fast on it once I got to the session. When I arrived, I sat down with the script and began breaking it down using the tools and processes that Todd had taught me at ACS. After about 4 minutes, the writer of the series came out of the room and said that they were ready for me. I remember thinking to myself that I felt confident with my understanding of the script, the character I was playing, the circumstances, what made the scene funny, and that I was as ready as I was going to be for a cold read. I went into the audition and they laughed- the writer, director and lead actor. More importnantly, I wasn't "acting" in the scene, I was really in it. The combination of having an incredibly strong acting foundation and the confidence to go with it was what got me the job. And that's what I realize is so great about Todd Rohrbacher and ACS- they build your foundation, craft and confidence. They want you to succeed. Their goal is to get you to a point where you don't need them anymore, because you're that good. How many acting teachers in Hollywood can you say that about? I've been studying with Todd for a while now but he recently opened his own studio... "The Actors Comedy Studio" and we do something new and exciting every class. He always thinks about what will be useful in our day to day lives and auditions and we will revolve a whole class around something he thinks we need to focus on. For example one class we focused on status in scenes... Who has the upper hand or the lower hand in the scene...we started out with a fun improve game with putting the characteristics of the status into our body... how the person would walk, hold themselves, talk etc. Then we brought "status" into our scenes. The next week I had a general meeting with the amazing casting director Mark Teschner of "General Hospital" and it was funny because we were talking for a while as actor to casting director and that dynamic and then he gave me a scene to perform that I hadn't seen before. The interesting thing was that the "status" in the scene had switched and I was the character in the position of power and the casting director wanted something from me... so I immediately thought of what we did in class and it helped a lot. Todd has also prepared me for getting into Groundlings etc...If I ever stop taking his class for even 2 weeks.... my acting and my happiness in live declines. Coming from NY, and having most of my experience be from the stage, I needed to find a studio where I could work on my on-camera technique. Not only did I find that at ACS, I found so much more! Every class is on camera and we get to watch back all the work we do in class. It has been extremely helpful for breaking certain habits and feeling confident when I audition on camera. Todd also pushes us to learn more about our industry through self production, writing, networking, etc. My favorite class was when he put us in groups of 2 and gave us all the same scripts, but with one character's lines missing. We then had to work together as partners and write the rest of the dialogue. 20 minutes later, we passed all the scripts to the right. We then got to edit our neighbor's work. After another 20 minutes, we passed them back and got to make final edits to our own scenes. After all that, we put them all on camera and the results were astounding. In under 2 hours we had written and shot 20 original scenes and they were all really good! To see how some people set up jokes or used the fixed lines to provide the punch lines was awesome. It motivated me to go home and start writing a web series because I saw how easy it was to just start doing it! I would recommend this studio to anyone at any level because Todd can truly help actors who have the drive to become successful. read more
